This is the final week to catch “Recasting Antiquity: Whistler, Tanagra, and the Female Form” at @carlosmuseum. This is the first exhibition to explore this theme in Whistler’s art and also features ancient Tanagra figurines on loan from the @museelouvre. The presentation focuses on a series of works on paper made in the 1890s by James McNeill Whistler, which was inspired by Hellenistic Greek terracotta figurines known as Tanagras. #aflouvre #louvre #museedulouvre #museelouvre Installation images of “Recasting Antiquity: Whistler, Tanagra, and the Female Form” at the Michael C. 🎨✨ AFL invites you to dive into the intricate world of Jan van Eyck’s masterpiece, ‘The Madonna of Chancellor Rolin’ with the Louvre’s latest exhibition, ‘A new look at Van Eyck’ (@MuseeLouvre)! This iconic painting is the only one by Van Eyck to be held in France, and it recently underwent historic conservation work for the first time since it entered the Louvre’s collection in 1800. With layers of oxidized varnish delicately stripped away, its former glory is now revealed in this significant exhibition. Seize the opportunity to experience this breathtaking transformation firsthand at the Louvre! The special presentation not only showcases this masterpiece, but also offers a rare opportunity to explore Van Eyck’s world like never before. With loans from prestigious international museums and a captivating virtual reality experience, visitors will be transported into the heart of the painting. You are invited to discover the secrets behind the seemingly overlooked details, from the miniature landscape to the enigmatic figures in the garden. Unravel the mysteries surrounding Chancellor Rolin’s encounter with the Virgin and Child, and delve into the symbolism within every brushstroke. This journey will deepen your appreciation for Van Eyck’s artistry and its significance in the context of 15th-century Flemish art. From portraiture to architectural symbolism, each section offers insights into the multifaceted layers of this masterpiece. Be sure not to miss a remarkable discovery made during conservation: a dazzling trompe-l’oeil of green faux marble on the reverse side, showcasing Van Eyck’s genius and innovation. Join us at the Louvre for an unforgettable exploration of “The Madonna of Chancellor Rolin” and its timeless allure. 🌟 #AFLouvre #Louvre #MuseeduLouvre #MuseeLouvre

Pearls are a saint’s best friend… Discover this new acquisition of the @museelouvre in Room 501 on the first floor of the museum. This beautiful triptych was commissioned by the last Romanov Tsar Nicolas II and only narrowly escaped destruction during the Bolshevik Revolution. Created in Moscow by P. I. Olovyanishnikov & Sons between 1908 and 1910, this icon depicts saint Nicholas (middle), saint Alexandra (right) and saint Alexis (left), easily identifiable as the patron saints of Tsar Nicolas II, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna and their son Alexis Nikolaïevich Romanov. Its rich silver, vermilion and mother-of-pearl mosaic - highlighted by faceted garnets and amethysts - bears the mark of Kuzma Ivanovich Konov, the director of P. I. Olovyanishnikov & Sons at the time. Konov was heavily influenced by the #ArtNouveau movement. Such a triptych would typically be kept by the members of the court, for use in private prayer, or commissioned as a gift to a loved one. However, this piece - perhaps due to the timing of its completion - was kept by the Olovyanishnikov family, thus surviving the soviet seizure of imperial art work. In 2025, this treasure will find its permanent home within the new department of Byzantine and Eastern Christian Art. #AFLouvre #AFLRecommends #Louvre #Byzantine #Icon #Romanov #Bolshevik #Soviet #EasternChristianArt #Olovyanishnikov #SaintNicholas #SaintAlexandra #SaintAlexis #Triptych 📸 : Triptych Icon representing Saint Nicholas, Saint Alexandra and Saint Alexis by Kuzma Ivanovich Konov for P. A colossal headless sandstone statue discovered in the AlUla valley is on view at the Louvre. The sculpture, discovered during the 2005-2007 excavations led by the University of King Saud, was unearthed among ancient remains of the Lihyanite kingdom. Around 2800 years ago, the Lihyanites ruled over north west Saudi Arabia, at the crossroads of the caravan routes leading from the Arabian Peninsula to Egypt, Mesopotamia and the shores of the Mediterranean. The capital city of Dadan – known today as the valley of AlUla - was one of the most important trade route stations. The statue, which measures almost 8 feet high, shows great craftsmanship and early artistic influences from Ancient Egypt and is believed to represent a king or priest. Gengis Khan … Marco Polo … These are just a few of the names the Silk Road brings to mind. Less well known is one of its most important crossroads: Uzbekistan. Many the intrepid explorer embarked on the arduous journey from India, China and Iran to the west. They all would have encountered this important cultural and intellectual center. “Splendors of the Oases of Uzbekistan,” which opened November 23, unites 130 works, many the fruit of joint conservation efforts between The Uzbek Art and Culture Development Foundation and the @museelouvre . The @museelouvre has acquired a rare model of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, the first of many acquisitions, destined for the museum’s new department of Byzantine and Eastern Christian Arts. The model, beautifully crafted of olive wood, with details highlighted in ivory and mother-of-pearl marquetry, dates from the 17th century, a period which saw the renewal of reliquary and holy objects, specifically manufactured in Bethlehem and destined for purchase by pilgrims. 2022 marks 200 years since #Champollion first decoded the secret of the hieroglyph.   On this occasion the Louvre has organized a special exhibition of « Karomâmâ vue par Jean-François Champollion » in the Sully wing, Room 337. The Karomâmâ is a statuette which Champollion brought back from Egypt in 1822 and which represents his incomparable grasp of the ancient Egyptians’ language and art. On view through February 2023, the exhibition features a number of Champollion’s writings and aspires to enlighten contemporary audiences as to his many roles: father of Egyptology; first curator of the Louvre’s Egyptian department; and the first man in millennia to read and understand ancient hieroglyphs.   #AFLouvre #Louvre #Karomama #Champollion   📸 Karomama  © 2016 Musée du Louvre / Christian Décamps

AFL recommends “16th-Century Bolognese Drawings in the Louvre Collections,” now on view at the @museelouvre through January 16, 2023. This remarkable exhibition showcases the importance of the Bolognese Renaissance as it led the way toward the Mannerist movement. From 1515 to 1550 a group of artists in Bologna began to expand on the artistic vocabulary introduced by Raphael. Artists such as Innocenzo da Imola, Bagnacavallo, Biagio Pupini and Girolamo da Treviso began to explore a more humanistic representation of the body. This artistic evolution coincided with the beginnings of modern anatomy in Bologna, where first Achillini and Benivieni, and eventually Andreas Vesalius, dared to dissect cadavers in an effort to obtain an accurate understanding of the human body. Look for strong plays between light and shadow highlighting anatomical features - such as in the work above by Bartolomeo Passerotti (1529-1592), depicting the god Jupiter in the clouds. #AFLouvre #AFLRecommends #Louvre #VanCleef #VanCleefArpels #GrandeGalerie #FrancescoFrancia #PeregrinodaCesena #MarcantonioRaimondi #AmicoAspertini #InnocenzodaImola #Bagnacavallo #BiagioPupini #GirolamodaTreviso #PellegrinoTibaldi #ProsperoFontana #LorenzoSabatini #OrazioSammachini #BartolomeoPasserotti 📸 : Jupiter assis dans les nuages, vers 1580. If in Paris, keep an eye out… for “Cabeza de vaca”. This photograph is part of the new @museelouvre exhibit “Les Choses” or “Things, a History of Still Life,” opening October 12th and running through January 23rd, 2023. Featuring art from the 16th to the 20th century, the exhibition posits the term “Still Life” as a misnomer, drawing together works, which give spirited expression to their inanimate subjects. “Cabeza de vaca,” - pictured - a photograph by transgressive American photographer Andres Serrano serves as a provocative exploration of this theme. All that remains of Serrano’s beast is his head, but the eyes in that head gaze out at us with a look that is very animated, very spirited, and very much alive. The renovation of the Mollien staircase, built in 1854 by the architect Hector Lefuel has been completed. The renewal reveals previously concealed details of the white and gold ceiling, originally decorated between 1869 and 1870 by Jean-Baptiste Klagman, Jules Cavelier, Duchoiselle and the painter Charles Louis Müller. Visitors to the Louvre can now clearly see the serpent Python crippled by Apollo’s arrows, as well as various putti, sphinx and caryatids which cover the 600 square meter vault above the stairs. #AFLouvre #Louvre #Mollien 📷 Credit @museelouvre

In parallel with the France-Portugal Season celebrated through October 2022, the @museelouvre presents an exhibition of 13 masterworks from the Portuguese Renaissance on loan from the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga de Lisbonne (MNAA).   As the Kingdom of Portugal expanded in the fifteenth century, so too did cultural exchange with countries such as the Netherlands. Portuguese painters found their own style between Italian and Flemish Renaissance artists, urged on by Kings Manuel and João III, who surrounded themselves with court painters and commissioned countless works in the beginning of the 16th century.   The Louvre now invites visitors to enter this “Golden Age” of Portuguese painting and discover the conversations, which occurred between Portuguese artists of the time and Flemish painters such as Jan van Eyck (who resided in Portugal from 1428 to 1429). The latter introduced new techniques, landscapes and textures to his Portuguese colleagues Jorge Afonso, Francisco Henriques and Lourinha, among others. Unlike artists of the Flemish and Italian Renaissance, their works almost always treat religious subjects, and are characterized by Portuguese cultural motifs such as nautical themes, as well as traditional textile and ceramic patterns.   The exhibition is on view through September 10.   #AFLouvre #AFLRecommends #JanvanEyck #JorgeAfonso #FranciscoHenriques #Lourinha 📸   Cristóvão de Figueiredo, Départ des reliques de sainte Auta de Cologne, Lisbonne, MNAA © DGPC / ADF, Luísa Oliveira / José Paulo Ruas

AFL is excited to announce a collaboration between #VacheronConstantin and the #Louvre: The Métiers d’Art Tribute to Great Civilizations collection. Featured recently in @wwd – see #linkinbio - and in the @nytimes , as well as in the #HomoFaber exhibition in #Venice, these watches were inspired by four masterpieces of antiquity found in the @museelouvre :   •        the Lion of Darius (Persia) •        the Great Sphinx of Tanis (Egypt) •        the Victory of Samothrace (Greece) and •        the Bust of Augustus (Rome) Scroll through the images above to discover the creative process behind the Grand Sphinx of Tanis watch. The Sphinx, one of the largest surviving outside of Egypt, arrived at the Louvre in 1826, as part of the collection of the British consul Henry Salt. A powerful mythical animal, which symbolizes the Pharaoh-God, it combines the body of a lion and the head of a man wearing the Nemes royal headdress and the beard of Egyptian sovereigns. Yesterday was Memorial Day, a day commemorating the lives of those fallen in battle. In 2014, the @louvrelens outpost of the @museelouvre mounted “Disasters of War: 1800-2014,” an incredible exposé of artworks displaying the horrors of war.   Here, pictured, is Henry de Groux’s “The Face of Victory, Wandering Knights,” included in the exhibition.  De Groux, a Belgian citizen living in Paris during World War I, traveled frequently to the front lines to capture his images. Are you in Dallas, TX?   It’s been 10 days since the Dallas Museum of Art opened “Cartier and Islamic Art: In Search of Modernity,” and the reviews are in.   @artnet ‘s article will best prepare jewelry aficionados for this one-of-a-kind exhibition, co-organized by Maison @cartier @madparis and @dallasmuseumart with important loans from @museelouvre .   “Cartier and Islamic Art: In Search of Modernity” takes as its launching pad the early 20th century “rebrand” by Louis and Jacques Cartier, the grandsons of #Cartier founder François-Louis Cartier. Louis and Jacques pioneered new styles for the house, influenced by the 1903 “Exposition des arts musulmans” at the Louvre, the #BalletsRusses Schéhrazade in 1910, and a show of Persian and Indian miniatures at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in 1912, among other sources. These works of jewelry, which are now on view to the public for the first time ever, became important conversation pieces in the #ArtDeco movement.   The exhibition remains on view in Dallas through September 18, 2022.   #AFLouvre #Linkinbio #LouvreonLoan #DallasMuseumofArt #MuseedesArtsDecoratifs #Cartier #Louvre     📸 Tiara, Cartier London, special order, 1936. Today, the Louvre opens “I, Taharqa, Pharaoh of Two Lands,” made possible with the support of @AFLouvre and its International Council. The exhibition illuminates the story of the little-known Nubian empire which evolved during the 8th century around Napata, in modern-day Sudan. Long after the glory of Pharaoh Ramses eroded, Nubia, newly emancipated, formed the kingdom of Koush, and occupied upper Egypt, unifying the vulnerable and divided former empire into one immense territory under its control. The most famous of the Nubian pharaohs, Taharqa, set about reviving Egypt’s military and cultural domination, leaving behind vast building projects and monuments commemorating this most incredible of short-lived dynasties. Read below for our final interview question with artist Beatriz Milhazes, as part of AFL’s Contemporary Artist Spotlight. AFL: Do you have a personal memory or anecdote about the Louvre? It is an art object in itself developed by Chinese American architect I.M.Pei. and one of Paris’ landmarks showing how beautifully the contemporary and the historical can unite. #AFLouvre #AFLSpotlight #beatrizmilhazes #impei #pyramid #louvre

Continuing this week’s AFL Contemporary Artist Spotlight with Beatriz Milhazes, we ask the artist our second question. AFL: Do you have a favorite place in or around the Louvre? BM: I prefer the Musée Eugène Delacroix, which is part of the Louvre, and one of my favorite styles of museum. It is not about visiting the private realm (former residence and studio) of the artist but about his life and memory. It is about the human scale of imagination and history. I’d like to share a quote from Delacroix’s journal: “My apartment is decidedly charming. I felt slightly melancholic after dinner to find myself uprooted once more. I gradually became reconciled with the idea and went to bed delighted. Woke up the next day to see the most gracious sun on the houses opposite my window. The view of my little garden and the cheerful appearance of my studio always make me happy.” (Journal, 28 décembre 1857) #AFLouvre #AFLSpotlight #beatrizmilhazes #delacroix

Tomorrow is Delacroix’s birthday, and for AFL’s #Contemporary Artist Spotlight, we meet Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. Currently represented by @Whitecube, @beatrizmilhazes tells us about her connection to the Louvre in general, and to artist Eugène Delacroix in particular. AFL: What is your favorite work in the Louvre? BM: I would say that "Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement” (1834) from Eugène Delacroix is one of my greatest memories from the Louvre Museum. Inspired by Delacroix’s long visit to North Africa, it is poetic. Matisse had a similar relationship with the Moroccan environment and it has been an important influence to me. #AFLouvre #AFLSpotlight #BeatrizMilhazes #Delacroix 📷 Beatriz Milhazes ©Vicente de Paulo, 2017 Eugène Delacroix, Femmes d'Alger dans leur apartment, oil on canvas, 1834 ©2021 RMN-Grand Palais (musée du Louvre) / Franck Raux

Are you familiar with Giorgio Vasari? Vasari is most famous for the publication of his “Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects,” a volume, which includes biographies of important Renaissance artists and which is commonly referred to as the foundational work of art history. Revised in 1568 and reprinted in Florence with the addition of woodcut portraits, the illustrated version disappeared following Vasari’s death. Now the @museelouvre in partnership with the @nationalmuseumswe has opened “Giorgio Vasari’s Drawings: A Mythic Collection,” giving the public a rare glimpse of these incredible woodcuts by Italian Renaissance artists such as Domenico #Ghirlandaio, Sandro #Botticelli, Andrea #Verrocchio, Andrea #Mantegna, Filippino Lippi, Pietro #Perugino, #Raphael, #Parmigianino, Sofonisba Anguissola, Primaticcio and #Vasari himself, on loan from institutions such as the @UffiziGalleries, the @BritishMuseum, the @AlbertinaMuseum, @Chatsworth, Christ Church Picture Gallery, @MuseoBoscoCapodimonte and the @VAMuseum On view through July 18 at the #Louvre and highly recommended! #AFLouvre #NationalMuseumSweden #Vasari #Renaissance #ArtHistory 📷 Sofonisba Anguissola, Jeune fille se riant d'un enfant mordu par une écrevisse, Naples Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte © Photo SCALA Florence, Dist- RMN-Grand Palais, image Scala-jpg

Did you know that yesterday was Raphael’s birthday? Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, was born on April 6, 1483 to Giovanni Santi di Pietro and Magia di Battista di Nicola Ciarla, both from wealthy merchant families from Urbino. Interestingly, Raphael was born and died on the same day. According to Vasari, young Raphael’s father, a painter for the Duke of Urbino, recognized his promise and arranged an apprenticeship with Pietro Perugino, a post he kept until his father’s death, upon which he inherited the latter’s studio. Along with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael is considered one of the great masters of the High Renaissance, and is responsible for redecorating the Vatican apartments of Pope Julius II and working with the subsequent Pope Leo X of the Medici dynasty, among many other important art patrons of the same era. Raphael was appointed architectural commissioner of the new St Peter's Basilica following Bramante's death in 1514. The @museelouvre is lucky enough to be the rare custodian of several dozen paintings and countless drawings by Raphael. When in France, head to the Denon wing, room 710 where many of these are currently on display. Currently in London? #AFLRecommends Gainsborough's “Blue Boy,” in London for the first time in 100 years. On view at the @nationalgallery (Room 46) through May 15, Blue Boy is on loan from the @thehuntingtonlibrary following its exquisite restoration, courtesy of a conservation grant from @bankofamerica. Railroad tycoon Henry Huntington was over 70 when he paid $728,000—the then-highest ever recorded for the sale of an artwork—to acquire “The Blue Boy” from the Duke of Westminster in 1921. The #NationalGallery has hung the #BlueBoy in the company of Gainsborough’s original inspiration—Anthony Van Dyck’s double portrait of the Duke of Buckingham’s orphaned sons and of the adolescent John and Bernard Stuart, three of whom died in the English civil war of 1642. If you can’t make it to #London, but are in #LA, AFL recommends @kehindewiley’s “A Portrait of a Young Gentleman,” commissioned by and currently on view at #TheHuntington in Los Angeles, in the Portrait Gallery.
