He developed a keen interest in photography and the ‘exotic' there. His travel photographs from Turkey, Spain, Palestine, Egypt, Morocco, China and India drew considerable public interest. By 1911, Courtellemont had opened the Palais de Autochromie, at 167 Boulevard Montmartre (Paris). It housed an installation workshop, a laboratory, an exhibition hall and a 250-seat room where he would often host his popular ‘projected’ lectures. He later worked with the National Geographic which published many of his autochromes and has 15 000 of his plates. In these autochromes of India by Jules Gervais-Courtellemont, you will notice the soft, muted colours that heighten the ‘exotic’ and ‘vintage’ AUTOCHROMES WERE MADE BY COATING A GLASS PLATE WITH A STICKY VARNISH AND DUSTING IT WITH A LAYER OF COLOUR DYED, TRANSLUCENT POTATO-STARCH GRAINS. THE PLATES WERE NEXT COATED WITH A LIGHT-SENSITIVE EMULSION. WHEN THE PLATE WAS INSERTED INTO A CAMERA, THE LIGHT FROM THE LENS PASSED THROUGH THE DYED STARCH GRAINS, WHICH ACTED AS COLOR FILTERS BEFORE REACHING THE EMULSION. He was then one of Katsushika Hokusai 's first students. FIG 1 shows " Murasaki Shikibu " an exquisite portrait completed in 1830. FIG 5 ' Head of a Salmon ' (1815-1825) shows that Hokkei did not forget his working roots. Inspired by his master, Hokusai who produced 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' (Fugaku Sanjūrokkei; 1830-1832 ) , Hokkei produced print series, including ' Famous Places from Various Provinces (諸国名所, Shokoku meisho; 15 prints) ' (1835–36) ie four years later.

Yoshida travelled widely, including to India for 4 months in 1930. He made 32 wood blocks in the following two years Yoshida trained in the Western oil painting tradition, which was adopted in Japan during the Meiji period. The style that defines Hiroshi Yoshida's art-work is known as ukiyo-e. This style emerged in Japan around the 15th century, which consists of the application of paint on a block of wood. His family's wealth derived from colonial India via tea and spices. He trained in Paris under Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gèrôme; later Weeks was awarded the Legion of Honour, 1896. Weeks' exquisite images of India following a visit 1882-3 ie aged 33 depict an exotic country with poverty not far away. Image 1 Ahmedabad 1886. Not widely shared is that from the 1st century CE to the start of British colonization in India in the 17th century, India's GDP varied between 25% and 35% of the world's total GDP, more than all of Europe combined. It dropped to 2% by the time Britain departed India in 1947.
