A first look at what’s to come to TEFAF New York next month, from @GalerieVallois. A central figure in 20th century French art, Raymond Hains, co-founder of the movements “Afichisme” and “Nouveau Réalism,” collected torn and damaged advertising posters from the streets of Paris in the 1940s. Hains presented the result of his practice at the turn of the 1960s, operating a displacement from the street to the gallery wall, drawing the viewer’s attention to the ambivalent emblem of the modern city: the street poster. The technique is also an anti-conformist message to the art world and its conventions, eliciting associations of ideas from common elements, while subtly referencing the politics that pervade the urban landscape and its discourse. We are delighted to announce that The Louvre has acquired Johann Richard Seel’s Portrait of the Bloem Sisters. We exhibited this extraordinary 1841 portrait at TEFAF Maastricht in March 2024, where it was featured as a centerpiece of our stand devoted to the Nazarenes and other early nineteenth century German paintings. It came as no surprise that the portrait was admired by many visitors to the fair, who were captivated by its originality. We are beyond thrilled that it will soon be hanging at The Louvre. Côme Fabre, Curator of Paintings at The Louvre commented: “The painting is an outstanding example of the German fantasy in the art of portraiture, which is quite unknown in France. I noted this painting immediately catches the attention of the French audience, seduced by the magic and uncanny atmosphere of the effigy. It is all the more refreshing as we are used to The Louvre’s famous Chassériau sisters, painted during the same period.” #tefaf
Lee Ufan Présentation by @galeriemennour @tefaf Born in 1936 in Korea, Lee Ufan lives and works chiefly in Paris and Kamakura, Japan. He is the main theorist and artist of the Mono-Ha (“School of Things”) theory in Japan. His work has been shown around the world, at institutions including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, Centre Pompidou Metz in France, Hermitage National Museum in St Petersburg, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, the Yokohama Museum of Art, the Jeu de Paume in Paris, the Kunstmuseum in Bonn, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul; and at events including the Biennales of Venice (2007, 2011), Gwangju (2000, 2006), Shanghai (2000), Sydney (1976), São Paulo (1973) and Paris (1971). In 2014, Lee Ufan was invited as guest artist at Louis XIV’s park and palace, in Versailles. Lee Ufan was awarded the Praemium Imperiale for painting in 2001 and the UNESCO Prize in 2000. In 2010 the Lee Ufan Museum opened at Benesse Art Site, in Naoshima, Japan. In April 2022, the artist inaugurated the new foundation Lee Ufan Arles, housed in the Hôtel Vernon, a seventeenth century building located near the city’s Roman arena, remodelled by the artist’s friend, architect Tadao Ando. One of Dickie’s favourite pieces from our sold archives! This superb Chinese wood figure of a Dutch lady was probably made in Jakarta (Batavia) in the late 17th century. The woman is wearing a traditional Dutch dress with typical features and a delicately carved face. Such a sculpture is highly unusual and most likely carved after an example in the form of an engraving or drawing brought by the Dutch to Asia. However, the artist clearly struggled with European facial features, so the woman has Chinese features. Besides, the woman is holding a Chinese fan, which - together with the hardwood from which it is made - points towards the Chinese/Batavia origins. A 1974 masterpiece by François-Xavier Lalanne, “L’Oiseau de Jardin à bascule,” ingeniously transforms the shape of a sparrow into a rocking chair, its rocking movement itself becoming a metaphor for the hopping of a pecking bird. Unlike Lalanne’s later works in bronze, this sculpture is made from steel and copper plates cut and welded by the artist himself. This technique of welding hammered metal sheets, used in many of his works of the 1960s and 1970s illustrates the importance of drawing for the artist. Both stylistic and structural, the welds, necessary to hold the body together, allow the artist to "draw" his work in three dimensions. This period gave rise to a style that is both rigorous and synthetic, poetic and technical, in which drawing is a determining factor in the creation and realization of an unprecedented repertoire of works. We are proud to participate in the tenth edition of TEFAF New York at the Park Avenue Armory from May 10 to 14, 2024. Here you can see a monochrome version of Andy Warhol's 'Flowers' that we will be showing on our booth 313. This work is from 1964 and it marked a sharp departure from his works of this period that addressed mass culture and brands or his controversial '13 Most Wanted Men'. However, never far from controversy, Warhol was sued for his unauthorised use of the original photograph by Patricia Caulfield. We will showcase an outstanding selection of paintings, sculptures and works on paper by renowned artists spanning the 20th and 21st centuries. Charles Ginner 1878-1952 was an artist at the heart of the Modern British movement. Born in Cannes to a British doctor he studied in an architects office in Paris before enrolling at the Academie Vitti and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He travelled to Buenos Aires and on his return moved to London joining Gilman and Gore in the Fitzroy Group. An admirer of van Gogh and Cezanne he was a member of the NEAS and elected to the Royal Academy in 1942. His works can be seen in public collections throughout the UK. So cherished among drawing specialists and collectors, they still form an unstudied part of her oeuvre. They were silently passed over in the only monograph to appear of her life and work, nor are they mentioned in the handbooks on Dutch marine art. If it weren’t for the monogrammed specimens, these drawings would probably have remained unattributed also in circles of connoisseurs, the more so because marines are not a genre easily associated with a female artist. In this pendant, a tropical frog carefullly clings onto the hand holding it. The frog’s vocal sacs, represented by a pair of keshi pearls, are inflated amidst its mating calls. Its body is made of yellow gold that shines through the linden green vitreous enamel covering it. The typical warty structure of its skin is achieved through the engraved inlays of red-spotted dark green heliotrope jasper. The enameled hand is gold-tattoed with rnaments inspired by thestar-shaped flowers of South African succulent plants. The hand wears blue sapphire and diamond rings and a bracelet micro pavé-set with yellow diamonds. A propos de cette exposition Nous sommes très heureux de rendre hommage à Alain de la Bourdonnaye (1930 - 2012), artiste français faisant partie du mouvement de l’art abstrait. La Bourdonnaye sut enrichir l’art de l’abstraction par son propre style d’une ascèse poétique et subtile. Il exposa en 1956 pour la première fois au très important Salon Comparaisons au Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris. En 1957 il participe déjà à deux expositions aux Etats-Unis: ’New Talents in Europe’ et ‘9 Artists working in Paris’ avant de rejoindre la Galerie Pierre à Paris ou sont représentés les artistes les plus importants comme Balthus, Braque, Léger, Matisse, Miro, Picasso, Pascin, Soutine, Giacometti, Vieira da Silva, Dora Maar, Riopelle et Mathieu. En 1958 l’artiste y aura sa première exposition personnelle. La critique loue la ‘distinction, la retenue et la gravité dans l’expression’ de ses formes solides ainsi que ‘leurs espaces aux dimensions subtiles’. La Bourdonnaye - quittant la galerie Pierre sur un désaccord entre marchand et artiste - continue néanmoins d’exposer avec d’autres artistes français comme Barré, Germain, Marfaing et Debré, avant de participer à l’importante exposition itinérante ‘Young French Artists’ à travers les Etats-Unis. Il expose aussi régulièrement au Salon de Mai jusqu’en 1964, avant de montrer son travail, à partir de 1968, et ensuite régulièrement, à Bruxelles d’abord chez Michel Vokaer puis à la galerie Régence. Les années 60 sont pour La Bourdonnaye les années des nouveaux défis: il s’intéresse à la sculpture, le collage et l’illustration ainsi qu’à l’édition des livres. Pour l’artiste lui-même, la ‘raison essentielle de cette diversité, n’est-elle pas un certain goût de la liberté? Et si l’artiste n’est pas libre, qui le serait?’ Ce goût pour la liberté se reflète aussi dans sa peinture qui évolue: l’artiste choisit dorénavant des formats verticaux et plus grands, une palette qui s’éclaircit et des compositions plus fluides. Look at the incredible detailing on this beautiful wine jug! This jug was made in Amsterdam in 1787 by Johannes Schiotling. It masterfully incorporates all elements of the neo classical or Louis XVI style, including the angular handle which ends in an acanthus leaf motif at the body of the jug. A first look at what’s to come to TEFAF New York next month, from @Galerie.Chenel. Meaning “young girl” in Greek, korai were originally Greek sculptures from the Archaic period that appeared in around the 7th to the 5th century BC. Generally used as votive objects placed in sanctuaries or marking the location of tombs, korai were always represented standing, legs close together, wearing a peplos or himation that completely hid their bodies and gave them a very stylized appearance. The masculine counterparts to korai are the kouroi, young men represented in a hieratic position, arms held along their sides and one leg forward. This sculptural typology, initially very stylized and increasingly naturalistic, thrived in that period, showing the evolution of sculptors’ technical mastery and the tastes of the patrons. This is our Chinese export painting of a Peruvian couple on horseback, made in Canton, in circa 1830. This drawing was produced for export by a Chinese artist in Canton. It is based on Peruvian pictures of ethnic and regional types known as costumbrismo (the visual documentation of costumes and customs during the first half of the 19th century). They were taken to China by sailors and merchants to be copied in Chinese workshops and exported to markets in Europe and the Americas. The drawing depicts a lady in the sayo y manto dress. The sayo y manto (long pleated skirt and shawl) was a distinctive costume of upper-class Lima ladies who wrapped the shawl over their heads and faces, leaving only one eye visible, a practice that earned them the name tapadas (the covered ones). Other signs of their upper-class status were their elegant footwear and stockings. The present work is a rare survivor of the 18th and 19th-century maritime trade contacts between Canton, Manilla and Central and South America.
