20 years ago we visited Mizuyo Yamashita’s studio in East London and knew we wanted her beautiful work in our first show. We showed her delicate Flora and Fauna and wobbly Butterfly Bowls and have been showing and selling her work ever since. Around the time of that first visit, Mizuyo was also in the early days of establishing herself and her work in London and we have loved watching her work evolve and grow over the years. She now throws most of her pieces altering them after and runs busy workshops on the art of Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with urushi lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Mizuyo has made us two stunning Still Life sets for our 20 year show @stock.wellstudio inspired by Morandi. Morandi is one of the most admired Italian artists and his influence goes far and wide. He is beloved by painters, sculptors, architects and filmmakers and must have influenced the many school children be taught over the years jn Bologna, a city he rarely left his whole life. Many artists have paid homage to Morandi and Andy Battaglia wrote a piece about Morandi in Art News mentioning the influence he has over architects ‘In a letter, a friend once wrote to Morandi expressing affection from noted architect Oscar Stonorov, and added, “Stonorov said Breuer, Mies van der Rohe, Gropius et al. also know and admire you.” Frank Gehry also cited Morandi as inspiration for a wildly designed house he conceived in Wayzata, Minnesota.’ Mizuyo has managed to capture Morandi’s distinctive creamy, dusty tones in this work as well as the forms which are as much about the spaces in between as the pieces themselves. Morandi's answer was that it had still been possible for painters of his generation, but that it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible for younger painters. The African-American painter Stanley Whitney cites Morandi as a key influence on the shape his work took when he moved to Rome to take up a teaching post for four years. This is where the stacked colour paintings for which Whitney is now famous took shape. In Whitney's words: 'Morandi was key to my being in Italy: the way he put things together, how quiet they were, how things touch'. Whitney's key realisation at the time was that the space is the colour.
