11/7/23 Day 7 Then vs Now The woman on the left was shy, insecure, lonely and just wanted people to like her. She NEVER wanted to tell her age and would avoid the question all the time. I’m pretty sure I might’ve told a little white lie once or twice about my age being younger than I was. This woman on the left, would dye her hair every 3 weeks so her silvers wouldn’t show. She didn’t have a voice and didn’t have the courage to use it if she tried. As I’ve said many times, I am shy, introverted, awkward, and I don’t like small talk. It is so beyond uncomfortable to me. I always wanted to fit in I didn’t and that was ok. Now the woman on the right, well she is quite different in many ways and the same in some. She would scream her age at the top of Mount Everest. She is proud of who she has become. She is happy with the growth she sees inside of her and the courage she has and continues to have. It gets stronger everyday. She still is shy, a social introvert, awkward af, a total squirrel and completely uncomfortable in certain situations. She now has the power to just say no. If it’s something or some place that I know will disturb my peace I just don’t do it. I try not to let anything or anyone disrupt my peace. I take life with the attitude that if it’s meant to be it will be. I also believe things happen for reasons. It has taken me so long to find it and nothing will jeopardize this. I love the courage, the pride and the confidence I have now. I don’t know if it’s from ditching the dye or this silver sisterhood I have found. ✨Aging is a privilege ✨ It’s my birthdayyy! Honestly every year on my birthday I get this overwhelming feeling of gratitude. When I was younger I had doubts that I would get to this age - 34. Someone once told me that getting to 30 would be unlikely and one of the first conversations about my health conditions included “reduced life expectancy”. I thankfully now know that this is no longer accurate thanks to medical advances and improved access to treament. I have also very much proven it wrong! So every time I see little smiley wrinkles around my eyes, every time I see a new silver hair glistening in the sun, I smile to myself and think how lucky I am to be privileged enough to get them. Not all my friends have been as lucky and I often think about how I wish I could watch them get wrinkles and silvery hair with the rest of us as we age together. Yesterday was my birthday. I was always taught "a lady never shares her age". I call bullshit on that nonsense. Since when is age a secret? Also, who defines what/who a lady is? I admit I woke up and felt sad. I sat and just felt it. I got my journal out. I asked in my journal, "Why are you sad?" I wrote, "because that is what we are supposed to do when we get older". Wow. I have learned to NOT resist the emotion because it will persist. Deep breath. Drop the shoulders. I wrote, "Who taught you to do that?" I wrote, "Mom". I was flooded with memories of being a young girl watching my mom sit on her bed crying that she was a year older. I asked, "Do you think it's ok to celebrate another year on this planet instead of being sad?" I wrote, "That would be more fun. Let's do that!". I can't stress the POWER of sitting down, pen/pencil in hand, and asking your inner voice some power questions. Aging is a gift. Life is a gift. Age is just a number that reflects how many times I have been around the sun. Well, I've traveled this path for 49 years. I am so grateful for life.
