The scandal started in 1965 with the publication in the USA of Ralph Nader's book Unsafe at Any Speed, crudely stating that the year before over 50.000 Americans were killed on the road and that no car manufacturer, especially in the USA, focused on advertising safety on their cars. The general public devoured the book, sending it to the best-seller list in 1966, discovering facts like the 1953 Buick Roadmaster power brakes failure (dealers were told not to warn buyers of this likely event until better components to retrofit the cars would have come), pre-1964 Corvairs handling issues, unsafe safety glass, shatter-prone cast-aluminium GM door hinges, unyielding interior surfaces, stupid cyclists and pedestrians-impaling tailfins, Ford's weak bumper support brackets, torsional rigidity inadequate for the weight of the cars and many other engineering and design lapses. And in general, the whole lack of responsible recall protocol. This, hand in hand with increasing pollution concern, meant the creation of a whole new federal construction specification, for active and passive safety, to be applied starting from 1968 on all newly-built American cars, and on all imported ones entering American soil. My grandpa remembered with amusement when Alfa Romeo also received an official communication from the US foreign department advising them to comply, which Alfa responded with a dry "We've been respecting this standard by a wide margin since 1962: rather, it's you who must get a move on." This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, a car that not only made history but also captured the hearts of auto enthusiasts worldwide. Known as ‘Italy’s sweetheart,’ the Giulietta was first introduced to the public on April 21, 1954, at the Turin Motor Show. The model debuted in its coupé form, the Giulietta Sprint, which garnered around 2,000 orders within the first few days of the show, a staggering number for the era. The Giulietta was pivotal in symbolizing the post-war economic boom and was the first Alfa Romeo to be named after a woman. It was during a preview at the Portello plant in Milan that the Giulietta truly dazzled, featuring a theatrical entrance with actors representing Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet arriving by helicopter. The Giulietta set benchmarks with its design and performance, beginning with the Sprint coupé developed by Franco Scaglione at Bertone. This model featured a sleek, minimalistic design with a distinctive wrap-around rear window, immediately making a significant impact. Powered by a 1290-cc twin-cam four-cylinder light alloy engine, the Giulietta could reach speeds of up to 105mph, and the Veloce version triumphed in its class at the 1956 Mille Miglia. Over its production span from 1954 to 1965, 177,690 Giuliettas were crafted, including variations like the saloon, the Spider (designed for the U.S. market by Pininfarina), and the estate version named ‘Promiscua’. 27-28 April 1935, a few months before the official launch of the Fiat 1500 on 5 September (with a small private preview by Aldo Farinelli for La Stampa newspaper on 3 September), i.e. the car that among those conceived and designed by Count Mario Revelli di Beaumont would have been the most widespread up to that point, signals were thrown at the 7th Turin concours d'elegance. He was already planting the seeds of his aerodynamic concept (started in 1934) with coachbuilders, his relationship much more usual rather than directly with a major manufacturer. Visible in his occasional presence at Pininfarina and above all in his assiduous collaboration with Viotti, which this image is taken directly from his advert for the success at the event. Viotti brought the two cars in the foreground: a Lancia Augusta and the Alfa Romeo 6c 2300B Pescara immediately behind, both individually showing and anticipating stylistic features that will be seen again on the upcoming 1500. Note how much they distinguish themselves from the other cars, all stupendous, but created with the intention of continuing the classic harmony, while Viotti wanted to amaze: we see a Lancia Astura cabriolet Pininfarina, a Bianchi S9 Dolomiti cabriolet with factory-built body, an extraordinarily sumptuous Dilambda saloon probably by Pininfarina again, and at the end a small Fiat 508 Balilla cabriolet of more dubious origin, maybe Garavini. What can make the already expensive but intriguing restoration of an Alfa Romeo 6c 2500 Sport Freccia d'Oro like this one found in New Jersey, both more complicated and more fascinating ? A rare element like its sunroof, in this case an original factory fitting, therefore nothing to do with do-it-yourself solutions which in the USA were quite widespread on old European cars, sometimes good-naturedly making up for the difficulty of supplying spare parts or their total absence, in other cases due to a lack of good taste. It certainly further increases the difficulty because there are no replacement roofs, if damaged it must be redone from scratch and it must be redone well. Exactly like the sheet metal panel behind it, above the rear window, which acted as a mobile deflector to prevent the canvas from flapping and to hold it securely when fully open, without creating excessive air whirlwinds for those sitting in the back: that too differed from the standard Freccia d'Oro. But above all it's the reason that generated it that justifies the work. Its design was already more or less completely defined by the end of 1945 but, with production already underway, a cabriolet version was also hypothesized in late-1947: almost entirely based on the sheet metal of the standard coupé (plaster models in last pics). The idea was quickly shelved, given that the coupé was already completely involving Alfa Romeo's limited industrial effort to create its assembly line, furthermore a convertible of this kind would have totally overlapped with Pininfarina's Sport/Super Sport Cabriolet.
