“Andrews Building, UTSC” Designed by John Andrews, architect of Toronto’s iconic CN Tower, the Andrews Building, located at the University of Toronto Scarborough College, is considered one of Canada’s iconic examples of modern architecture. I was attracted to this particular building as it reminded me of the sketches from a book in my library. (See third image/ Italian futurist, Antonio Sant’Elia’s, whose drawings were created well over 100 years ago). Well the more I look into it the more I learn (funny that). No longer called the Andrews Building but the Science and Humanities Wings today. Architect John Andrews really left his mark on the city as he also designed the CN Tower. This Brutalist masterpiece was the first to be finished on the campus in '65. The angular, tiered construction creates wide street-like walkways with balconies that run the building’s length. Having written a lengthy piece for Site magazine's Future Legacies issue, I wasn't sure how images might be chosen. The article on the history of Brutalism in Toronto refers to many post-war buildings in black and white which can start to appear redundant against contemporary works. But I'm very pleased that the design team chose one iconic image and allowed the text to share white space.
