The movie I am reviewing today is the musical Les Miserable 2012 This movie was written by William Nicholson, Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schonberg, Herbert Kretzmer, and Victor Hugo. It was directed by Tom Hooper and stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried The movie begins in the back drop of yet another French revolution, with Jackmans Jean Valjean doing hard time (20 years) in prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving nephew. After helping pull a ship into port, he is given his parole papers by the stubborn Javert (Crowe) and warned to not break his parole. Of course Jean breaks his parole but with the help of a priest he gets away and starts a new life to “make things right”. Jean is able to do that and is now a factory owner and mayor of a small town. Jean saves a man in the street from being killed single handily and gets the attention of his former captor Javert! After some time Jean sees Fantine, a former worker in his factory that was fired for having a daughter (Cosette) out of wedlock, dying in a hospital and promises to find her and take care of her as best he can. Will Jean be able to avert Javert for the foreseeable future, or will he be arrested and sent to prison for life? This movie is of course a musical. Personally i am not a fan of musicals and unfortunately that is the case here. I can tell it’s a good movie, the production, the acting and the signing, but i am just not a fan of this kind of movie. If you like musicals, then this is 100% for you, but if not I would give it a skip. 🎬 Ex Machina (2014) 🎬 Rating : 3.6 / 5 (good) Overall : Ex Machina is a well-crafted, thoughtful mystery teeming with anxiety and tension, but it ended more thoughtful and less intense than I personally wanted. Review : The trailer for Ex Machina suggested a sci-fi thriller with some action and suspense, but the film took a different route. Instead of delivering outright thrills, Ex Machina slowly builds tension with each passing moment, drawing viewers into its captivating mystery. Throughout the movie, I found myself engrossed in unraveling the truth—questioning who was manipulating whom and what was real. The tense atmosphere kept me on edge, desperate for answers. Ex Machina is exceptionally well done and well acted that masterfully crafts a tense and anxiety-inducing tone. While the film's conclusion might tie off loose ends, it didn't fulfill my expectations for a more intense and action-packed finale, which made me realize I might not be the target audience for this movie! 😂 Ultimately, Ex Machina is an excellent choice for thoughtful movie enthusiasts who enjoy mystery and philosophical contemplation within a sci-fi context. April 29, 1940 - Hot on the heels of Vivien Leigh’s success in Gone With the Wind, a film she had made three years earlier with Laurence Olivier was released in the United States. It was originally titled “The First and the Last” but was changed when released to “21 Days Together”. The plot of the film is thin and the finished product is a bit silly, but I still enjoy seeing Viv & Larry when they were young and in love. Upon its release in the US, Olivier & Vivien went to an oscure little New York cinema and watched about a third of its length before they got up and walked out. They never did see the completed film in its entirety. These photos come from a promotional shoot for the movie. “I’m not going to leave you here to die, Warden, because I don’t care about your bridge and I don’t care about your rules. If we go on, we go on together.” Now showing #BridgeOnTheRiverKwai! It’s kind of brilliant in it’s simplicity, though there is a lot going on between the lines here. I thought it would just be another action/prison escape film with the typical jingoistic 60s “hell yeah, America!” attitude, but I was quite enamored with the complexities of the characters. It features three men who are all “doing their duty,” but what that means is total different between them all. Nobody’s right or wrong here. All the performances are really strong, especially #AlecGuinness’ - I just wish he was in the movie more. The only thing keeping this movie from perfection is the runtime. This did not need to be almost 3 hours long. A solid 2hrs10min would’ve done this movie justice. And the big climactic bridge explosion was a little underwhelming. Maybe it’s because I knew it was coming, but it just needed a little more... oomph. Like throw the ending soundtrack to Aliens over this movie and I’d be on the edge of my seat!! Regardless, I’m glad I’ve finally checked this one off my list. Despite some personal shortcomings I had with it, it’s still a pretty damn impressive flick that’s worthy of being called a classic.
