Sunset on South Link Line Taiwanese vintage train ride along the Pacific coast I have a thing for trains, particularly for any old vintage trains. The South Link Line is the southernmost section of Taiwan’s circular rail network. More interestingly, there’s a vintage train that runs on the South Link Line once a day. So this train ride easily became part of our travel lists back in my homeland Taiwan. In the summer of 2011, finally we got the chance to take this train ride. Running across the southern tip of the island of Taiwan, South Link Line connects the western and eastern coasts. The train ran in the beautiful countryside surrounded by the mountains. After going through numerous tunnels, the train arrived at Dawn, the first station on the east coast. We were greeted by the view where the Pacific Ocean and the sky merged. We were refreshed by the Pacific breeze coming through the opening windows. It’s impossible not to feel relaxed seeing the sparkling rays of sunshine reflecting onto the blue Pacific Ocean. Traveling along the Pacific, we captured the mesmerizing moment when the sun set from the sea framed by a vintage train. This is the vintage train with no AC but the Pacific breeze. This is the vintage train with no modern sleek touch but old-fashioned longitudinal seats and hang ring hand straps. This is a perfect slow travel to enjoy mountains and the ocean views in the wayward zone of Taiwan. Spectacular River Gorge Dazzling Catalan wilderness In November 2017 we arrived in Barcelona. After picking up our rental car from the airport, we started heading to Pyrenees, the mountain stranding the border of France and Spain. The first stop was the Gorge of Mont-Rebei located 3-hour drive from Barcelona. The gorge of Mont-Rebei is created by the Noguera Ribagorçana river on its course through the Montsec mountains. The result is two incredible rock walls with a river of turquoise green water crossing them. The walls are as high as 500 meters. The only way to cross the gorge is through a path of less than 3 meters of width entirely excavated in the rock. No need to say that this allows enjoying the landscape in an imposing way. Definitely not suitable for those suffering from vertigo! While hiking along the narrow cliff side path, we saw narrow gorge walls reaching just 20 meters in some places. 500 meters below the cliff was where people kayaking along the river surrounded by immense rock walls. Sunbeams Fall On Redwoods Trees Uplifting moment in the middle of ancient forest Redwoods National and State Parks, a sprawling system of preserves that shelters our planet’s tallest living things in the Pacific Northwest. It protects the world's 45% of all remaining coast redwood old-growth forests over 38,982 acres. The species is the tallest, among the oldest, and one of the most massive tree species on Earth. Some trees are taller than 370 feet - or five stories taller than the Statue of Liberty. We visited Redwoods for the first time back in 2010. This is one of those places where photos can’t come close to depict the size and scale of it. We spent hours hiking deep into the forest and still were just as mesmerized. We totally felt like setting foot on another planet. There was a sublime moment when we stood there craning our necks upward and experienced sunbeams falling on us through all those natural skyscrapers in a sunny afternoon. I felt I was perceiving something beyond my comprehension. My Own Private Catskills A perfect cabin nestled in serene forest Catskills has been a popular getaway for New Yorker since 19th century. This beautiful mountainous region west of the Hudson Valley was popularized by Hudson River School painters. All the romantic images created by inspired artists encouraged a preservation movement: in 1894 the state constitution was amended so that thousands of acres are forever kept as wild forest lands. Numerous times we visited the Catskills in different seasons and it gave us all the different memories and inspirations. One time we stayed in an Airbnb cabin in West Catskills nestled deep inside a tranquil forest. There was a private pond in front of our cabin. A sublime moment came when the sunlight was dimmed and the moon was already up in the sky. We rolled the boat on the pond and I pulled out the paddle from the water in the center of the pond, everything seemed to stop. In such a tranquil surrounding the only sound is the frog croaking. Discovering Unspoiled Taiwan Magical road trip on the East Coast Eastern Taiwan is a special place for many Taiwanese. Unlike western Taiwan where most large cities are situated, eastern Taiwan is backed by the vast Central Mountain Range and facing the Pacific Ocean. It’s the land of stunning beaches, gorges, coral reefs, valleys, aboriginal cultures, clean air and a slower pace of life. If you’re drawn to nature and looking for an unrushed atmosphere. Hualien and Taitung in eastern Taiwan have the natural beauty and the vibes for you. The magical drive down Taiwan’s Coastal Highway 11 and 9 is an absolutely amazing experience. In late November of 2014, we started our road trip to the East Coast of Taiwan. After we did the Pacific Ocean side of the road trip along Highway 11, we went on Highway 9 going through the East Rift Valley - a stunning green valley of rice fields between Central and Coastal Mountain Range. We had a great time enjoying hot springs, hiking and cycling. But nothing compared to randomly driving through a sea of rapeseed flowers. During the winter months, the areas of rice paddies are transformed into rapeseed flower fields. The bright yellow rapeseed flowers taking over the entire valley backdropped with railroad track, red bridge and magnificent Central Mountain Range. It was the most tempting and gorgeous view we encountered on our trip. We had to stop and go down to the field to immerse ourselves in such an astonishing surrounding. Where The Land Meets The Sea The Flåm railway & fjord cruise in Norway In the summer of 2015 we arrived in Oslo, Norway. After a few days sightseeing in Oslo, we started one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world - Flåm Railway to cross the heartland of Norway. We traveled from zero to 2845 feet above the sea level through the spectacular Flåm Valley. The journey takes us past mighty mountains, lush nature, and cascading waterfalls with steep drops. The train journey ended in Flåm, a small picturesque village situated innermost in the Aurlandsfjord. It’s home of the Flam Railway and fjord cruise. When we got off the train, a big cruise ship just docked right next to the train station waiting for us to sail through the eye-popping UNESCO world heritage area Nærøyfjord. This lovely town is nestled innermost where the stunning land meets the sea. Moonshine Over Winding Road Intriguing Amorgos is our favorite Greek island Amorgos is an absolutely stunning Greek island in the Cyclades. It’s known for its dramatic scenery with some of the highest mountains in the Aegean. The view from the top of the cliff over the Mediterranean is something I will never forget. Amorgos is a relatively large island with only 2000 residents. It's a long and thin island that’s almost 30 miles from north to south. Chora is an old town located in the center of the island and it’s absolutely charming. Walking through the town was like walking through some sort of Cycladic fairy tale. There’s one main street where all the restaurants are so we picked one restaurant with tables set out on the white cobblestone streets under the most vibrant Bougainvillea trees. After a wonderful dinner it was time to head back to our Airbnb room in the north. When the night falls this island offers a very different vibes. Driving through a dramatically winding road with no any street lights at night was a bit nerve racking. With the road soaring up to the peak and winding down to the bay, a yellow moon floated still above an illuminated and calm Aegean Sea. It surfaced a reflected yellow moon and together they projected a radiant from the dark and surely gave us a sense of comfort and direction. It was a surreal and mystical moment that it felt like only two of us were in the universe. Fact: Luc Besson’s film The Big Blue was filmed in Amorgos in 1988. [Susi] Xu Qizhang ( #ShenJyun) se topó con Ye Guang ( #LiZhenHao) en el momento más triste de su vida, aunque fue un visto y no visto, y un año después coinciden en el instituto de secundaria. Guang es el chico más popular, pero nadie sabe realmente el infierno que es su vida por culpa de la presión de sus padres. Conocer a Qizhang, esta vez de verdad, es para él como encontrar un oasis en el desierto, ese amigo que no sabía que necesitaba y que lo saca de su monotonía, haciendo que experimente muchas cosas nuevas. “About youth” es un BL taiwanés de, por desgracia, 8 capítulos de 20 minutos. Cierto que no es una historia original, pero tiene ese toque que la hace especial. Dos personajes que han crecido en ambientes totalmente distintos. Guang tiene 17 años, viene de una familia de dinero y con unos padres muy controladores a los que sólo les importa que saque buenas notas y que no los avergüence. Nunca ha podido elegir nada y no sabe qué quiere hacer con su vida, porque sus padres son los que eligen el camino por él sin darle margen a nada. Qizhang, por su parte, tiene 18 años, perdió a su padre unos años atrás, que fue de quien heredó su amor por la música, y vive con su madre, a quien ayuda a llevar un pequeño local de comida. Su sueño, obviamente, es dedicarse a la música, y es el vocalista de una banda amateur que formó con algunos colegas. Y, evidentemente, está enamorado de Guang. Qizhang y Guang son preciosos y su historia es muy bonita y está bastante bien contada. No se puede decir lo mismo de la pareja secundaria, los mejores amigos de ambos, Ray ( #HsuShuoTing) y Jian ( #AndyHuang), cuyas escenas parecen pegotes en el montaje y da la sensación de haberse perdido algo. Es una pena que, siendo también una historia interesante, no se desarrolle en condiciones. Sea como sea, en general, hay cosas que hubieran necesitado explicarse mejor en lugar de resolverse tan de sopetón. Pero esto no es nuevo en estos dramas tan efímeros. Pese a haber cosas que chirrían, es un BL muy cuco, demasiado corto y que atrapa por su sencillez. #BL #AboutYouth
