RESERVED, A antique French signed “Butterfield AParis” silver traveling pocket compass sundial in its authentic sharkskin with green velvet case, Ca 1700. With hour graduation for latitudes 43-46-49-52°, IV-XII, I-VIII, 4-12, 1-8 and V-XII, I-VII with quarter-hour divisions, the latitude arc graduated 43°-52°, adjustable bird-shaped gnomon support with a scale 40 - 50 - 60, the compass box with a blue’d iron needle for the north and a extra gilt copper needle for a adjustable magnetic north, with a extra scale from 20 - 10 ~ 10 - 20. ( I can’t find a other one on the net with this extra function) The hand engraved compass sundial is decorated with foliage and scroll, the engraving with niello infill. The reverse with the names and latitudes for 28 cities (20 in France and 8 others). Michael Butterfield (1635–1724) was a British clockmaker who moved to Paris about 1663. He worked at the royal court of France and was appointed engineer to the King Louis XIV. He opened a shop selling precision instruments in 1677 in rue Neuve-des-Fossés, in Saint-Germain. He sold all types of sundials, but dominated the market for the small traveling compass sundials with the adjustable gnomon with bird motif and three chapter rings. This type of dial became fashionable and called the Butterfield dial. ANTIQUE COMPASS This beautiful little compass is marked “Brevet Dem” with a little cross. Brevet is “patent” in Dutch, so it was likely made in Denmark, in the early 20th century. It has a metal case with a gorgeous silvered dial, with a locking mechanism in the crown. It’s still working after over a century. It has a name scratched into the back, but I can’t read it. Measures 3 1/4” tall to the top of the loop, 1 5/8” across the face and 7/16” thick. The beveled glass is 1/8” thick. Comprised of an eight-inch diameter graduated brass compass bowl suspended on a robust brass gimbal mount. This instrument sports a superbly detailed sixteen-point, green card compass rose under glass, with Fleur de Lys motif to the North point and a brass rim surround which is further graduated with a minute 360 degree scale. For sale, a large William IV period dry card marine sighting compass by Hemsley of 4 King Street, Tower Hill London. A fascinating and superbly engineered early example of this design of compass which I have not come across previously. It is manufactured with superb attention to the brass work and remains closely aligned to Schmalcalder’s design. The gimbal mount and its increased size reflects Hemsley’s approach in adapting this new style for maritime use. The Hemsley’s were known instrument makers from the 1780’s. Henry Hemsley was apprenticed to Henry Raynes Shuttleworth who also taught the famous John Bleuler (later Master of Spectacle Makers Company) within a similar timeframe. Henry began trading in 1781 and apprenticed his son Thomas in 1789 who eventually took over the business in 1801. Thomas was the first to be recognised with an address at King Street and despite a short partnership by his sons, Joseph and Thomas (II) from 1826 to 1828, Thomas (II) eventually graduated to full and singular ownership of his Father’s business. Thomas (II) continued to trade at King street for a further twenty years and is noted as an exhibitor at The Great Exhibition with mention of his “improved Ship’s Binnacle” in Class VIII. Little more is known of this competent maker although examples of his instruments are held within the Harvard Museum Collection. Given the supreme quality of his output and his ties to other well renowned makers of his era, it suggests that more research is required to give this family of maritime instrument maker’s a rightful place in the pantheon. 🧭 An incredible, rare antique compass housed in a sterling silver case, beautifully hand engraved with a sailing ship and fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1899. The compass can be removed from the case; sadly it does not appear to navigate accurately (although the pointer does move) so this is being sold as a decorative piece only. Attached is a chunky curb link short chain and a large jump ring - most likely originally attached to a Victorian gentleman's watch chain! Each link is stamped with the lion passant, representing sterling silver. This cool old compass was made back in the 30’s or 40’s in England. It’s cased in heavy, black painted brass with a floating dial. It has a locking switch for travel, and another little lever to steady the dial momentarily. It’s still working well. There’s some wear to the black finish, otherwise it’s in great condition. Mackenzie is listed as an ‘Optical, Mathematical & Philosophical Instrument Maker’ working at 15 Cheapside, London in the earlier 19th century, fl. circa 1822. Measures 4.5 inches in diameter and is in amazing untouched, unpolished condition with no faults just missing one tiny screw to the sundial hinge not affecting the functionality at all. Such a fascinating object. This beautiful little compass was made in Germany likely in the early 1800’s. It’s made of brass with a beveled glass front and a very detailed paper dial. It finds north after all these years, although I. an’t guarantee it’s accuracy. Measures 1 9/16”tall to the top of the loop, 1” across the face and 3/8” thick. An unusually small and very attractive silver pocket compass by Francis Barker with case by William Oliver, Birmingham c1898. Antique silver pocket compass having 1⅛” silvered and frosted gilt compass dial with silvered reflector ring, the centre hand-decorated with cardinals, intercardinals, and crosses marking false points, the outer ring divided divided to 6°. Arrow shaped needle with blued portion indicating north, suspended on jewelled suspension under deep bevelled glass held in brass bezel. All within a drum form hunter case with suspension ring through hinge, hallmarks to side for Birmingham, 1898, and “W.O” for William Oliver. Condition: Generally crisp overall, the silver case with light marks commensurate with age and use, two small impressions to verso, the hinge sound. The dial and needle clean, the glass undamaged. Compass quickly and easily finds North. Comments: A very unusual and attractive pocket compass, the silver case by a very respected silversmith, the compass unsigned but bearing all the hallmarks of Francis Barker, the preeminent maker of compasses of the day, who produced white label instruments for the trade, rarely self-signing. Very collectable and a wonderful gift.
