Likely among my preferred pieces showcased at a fair or auction in London this week, and arguably one of the most historically significant: ANTONIO POLLAIUOLO's 'Battle of the Nudes,' circa 1470-75, engraving – the final state of one of the pivotal and most influential Italian prints from the 15th century, originating from the splendid Sam Josefowitz Collection, which was auctioned at Christie’s London tonight. 5 août 1473 : le plus ancien dessin daté de Léonard de Vinci, alors âgé de 21 ans, est réalisé par le jeune artiste. Nommé "Paysage de la vallée de l'Arno", ou plus simplement "Le Paysage", il s'agit d'un dessin de petite taille (19 centimètres sur 28,5 centimètres) effectué à la plume et à l'encre, authentifié par l'écriture de Léonard de Vinci. Ce n'est peut-être pas son plus ancien dessin, mais il s'agit bien de son plus ancien dessin accompagné d'une date. De Vinci a noté lui-même dans l'angle supérieur gauche le jour où le dessin a été exécuté : le 5 août 1473, jour de la fête de Sainte Marie des Neiges (« di di Santa Maria delle Neve addi 5 daghosto 1473 »). Le paysage dessiné représente un relief rocailleux et la vallée de l’Arno, près de Florence, telle qu’on la trouve dans le fond de maintes peintures florentines, notamment celles d’Antonio Pollaiuolo. De cette œuvre ressort l'intérêt du jeune Léonard de Vinci pour les phénomènes naturels (fleuves, lacs, plantes), ainsi que sa maîtrise d'un style simple. Le besoin de perspective y est très peu sensible, si ce n'est quelques grilles simulant les champs au loin dans la plaine par un quadrillage perceptible, le premier plan étant celui d'une hauteur et d'un éperon rocheux, tandis que le deuxième plan présente un bourg fortifié. El 4 DE FEBRERO DE 1498 falleció en Roma el artista italiano Antonio Pollaiuolo. Nacido en 1429 en Florencia, se formó artísticamente junto a su hermano. Aunque comenzó como orfebre, lo dejó para dedicarse al grabado, la pintura y la escultura. Su obra refleja tanto influencia clásica como interés por la anatomía humana. Es destacable el contraste entre sus representaciones de hombres, musculados y de exagerado movimiento, y de mujeres de actitud serena y pincelada detallada. Sus discípulos más relevantes fueron los pintores renacentistas Sandro Botticelli y Andrea Sansovino. Tras establecerse en Roma en 1484, trabajó para los papas Sixto IV e Inocencio VIII. More unusual is the framed print on the wall behind the clutter of objects. The myth of the founding of Rome endures. Very complex backstory. Abandoned twins, Romulus and Remus, were nursed by a generous she-wolf, circa 750BC near the Capitoline Hill. We are enjoying the juxtaposition of artistic periods in the cross category sale @sothebys on 25th March which sees Renaissance masters standing next to masters of 20th century. My particular favourite is the Piero Pollaiuolo (Florence 1441-c.1496 Rome) ‘Portrait of a Youth’ tempera and oil on panel, 49.2 x 35.5cm, estimated at £4/6 million. This quintessentially Florentine Renaissance portrait reminds me of a happy year spent in the city studying history of art in my youth! Piero was the younger brother of the better known Antonio Pollaiuolo yet both were credited with the creation of some of the most important works of the period. Interestingly, this work comes from the same private collection as the Botticelli, ‘Portrait of a Young Man Holding a Roundel’ sold in NY on 28th January for £67 million (see earlier post). Attribution is such an interesting topic changing the fortunes of Old Master paintings, note the Royal Academy label simply attributing the work to the artist, in 1973 the work was reattributed to the less esteemed Cosimo Rossella with a much lesser value than the Piero Pollaiuolo attribution holds.
Did the exquisitely dressed young woman in Antonio Pollaiuolo’s portrait ever step into the streets of 15th century Florence on her own? Almost certainly not. I wonder if she had the curiosity to wonder what the ‘real’ world was like or was she content with the security of her wealth and privilege? 🕯 I had intended to write about 1950s Phaidon art books this week but each day something else has taken over. Classics of their time - even when they were written by rogues like Bernard Berenson. They were very expensive. The price of 3 guineas on the fly leaf is about £90 in today’s money and of the 400 illustrations only 17 are in colour, printed separately and tipped in on blank pages. So simple, venerable and serious in comparison to the lavish and luxurious contemporary publications by Phaidon. 🕯 At my husband’s suggestion we stood outside with a candle yesterday evening at 9.30 in memory of Sarah Everard and for her family and friends. Think of the progress in printing, science, technology, medicine - everything - since the 15th century or the 1950s and yet women still feel unsafe walking alone at night. Feeling safe is a fundamental element in a decent, healthy society. For Sarah’s family and all of us, I hope we as a society acknowledge it and do something. 🕯 The last year has been so full of - fill in the word you think I’d like to use! Do you remember what Sundays were like before? There are so many things I’m looking forward to doing on a Sunday - top of my list are looooong lunches with family and friends and next is visits to museums and galleries. Or combining the two - lunch with family and friends and then a gallery!
