Profile Portrait of a Young Lady is a 1465 half-length portrait, made with oil-based paint and tempera on a poplar panel, usually attributed to Antonio del Pollaiuolo. It is one of the most famous portraits of women from the early Italian Renaissance. A friend of mine suggested last Fall that my profile reminded her of the face in the painting. She sent me the digital of the portrait— and I was intrigued. I decided to repaint the painting composition with my profile as a lesson in study of a master. It was a challenge to embrace another artist’s work. Of course it didn’t come close to the original — but it was enlightening to mirror the master. Como hoy hace años que murió el florentino Antonio del #Pollaiuolo, allá por 1498, os dejo unas imágenes de la que muchos consideran la tumba más hermosa de la historia. La hizo en bronce para el papa Sixto IV, el que construyó la capilla Sixtina (él era franciscano y quería enterrarse en el suelo, pero su sobrino, que también sería papa, decidió que de eso nada). Es tremendamente original (con esas paredes inclinadas, en talud), y en toda ella está el espíritu del #Renacimiento.
TAL DÍA COMO HOY... En 1498 murió el florentino Antonio del #Pollaiuolo, y para recordarlo os dejo esta bellísima obra suya. Representa la historia de #Apolo y #Dafne. ¿La conocéis? Pues os la voy a contar. Parece que Apolo y Eros tuvieron un enfrentamiento y este, juguetón como siempre, decidió vengarse. ¿Qué hizo? Pues le arrojó una flecha de oro, que causaba que el que la recibía se enamorara inmediatamente, y a la ninfa Dafne le lanzó una de plomo, que causaba el rechazo amoroso. Apolo vio a Dafne y se volvió loco, pero ella experimentó el sentimiento contrario y echó a correr. El dios comenzó a perseguirla hasta que Dafne, agotada, pidió ayuda a su padre (que era un río), que decidió convertirla en laurel. En el momento en que Apolo alcanzó a Dafne se inició la transformación y su cuerpo se cubrió de una dura corteza, sus pies fueron raíces que se hincaban en el suelo y su cabello se llenó de hojas. Apolo se abrazó al árbol y se echó a llorar. Y dijo: «Puesto que no puedes ser mi mujer, serás mi árbol predilecto y tus hojas, siempre verdes, coronarán las cabezas de las gentes en señal de victoria».

L'argomento è tra i più classici: la rivalità tra dei e la forza e i pericoli dell'amore. Cupido, per vendicarsi di Apollo che lo aveva criticato, colpisce il dio con una delle sue frecce d'oro dell'amore, scatenando così in lui un ardente desiderio per la ninfa Dafne, ma scocca verso di lei una freccia di piombo spuntata, che respinge l'amore. Un tempo si credeva erroneamente che questo dipinto fosse un frammento decorativo di un cassone (un baule nuziale), ma infine si giunse alla conclusione che si trattasse di un dipinto indipendente. La delicatezza della minuzia dei dettagli, come i fiori sparsi per la collina e il riflesso degli alberi nel fiume, assieme alla delicata resa delle montagne indistinte in lontananza, ci suggeriscono che sia un dipinto realizzato con l'intento di essere ammirato da vicino. His engraving was highly influential as one of the first relatively accurate depictions of human body in the medium. Its iconography remains a mystery, but the characters are sometimes identified as gladiators. Rather not surprising vine in the background accompanies the artichokes (my guess was the common hop 😎). She has been exploring the public functions of archives, museums and exhibitions often resulting in conceptually driven projects and films involving the property of others. These works propose new relations between forms of knowledge and ownership, activating reflections on the social and immaterial public realm. In 2009 she has established the Women’s Audio Archive followed by a publication Undoing Property? co-edited with Laurel Ptak in 2013. Her work has been presented by Tate Modern, Moderna Museet, Muzeum Sztuki, Whitechapel Gallery. The latest installation It’s About Time occupied the Pavilion of Applied Arts at the 58th Art Biennale in Venice. The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw has recently included the Enthusiasts Archive project in their collection.
