🪶Writing Update🪶 Went to the National Gallery in London last month and saw some great artwork, including an unfinished Michaelangelo (a contemproary of my characters!) Really fun to see what Isabettas's work may have looked like (if she'd been permitted to paint) I've had to do a lot of research on Renaissance artwork, types of paint, painting techniques etc. for her scenes - did you know many artists had apprentices that had to learn to paint in their specific artstyle and would help with may of their paintings and experts can sometimes find it difficult to distinguish between the work 👀 This research is important because it underpins the entirety of the Renaissance and underpins many other scenes with other characters. I love stumbling upon a line of research that leads to a whole new scene or plot point. It's just as fun as using your real life to inform your work. Since my last update, I've developed Beatrice, Isabetta's sister in law, significantly from my MA. She served a purpose then, but had very little personality outside of serving that purpose. I sat down and just wrote some facts about her, anything that came to my head - what she does in the story, and why, and the type of person she is, and in this random mesh of word vomit a character formed. Her scenes with Isabetta very quickly became so fun to write. I hope she's a joy to read, i hope her actions make her a confusing character, and i hope i can get across the complexity of being a young person with lots of conflicting voices having a say in your life before you have the chance to develop agency. At least for now, who knows how they'll change as the writing progresses! I've been looking at side characters and sub plots as a whole and how they can inform the main plot. 3 weeks until the opening of my exhibition in London 😱 The excitement is growing and every now and then I would like to present here works that I show at the jamesfreemangallery. If you are thinking about a flashy state portrait, this is a good example. State portraits always show leaders who want to express their overview, their indefeasibility, well, simply their greatness. Then it is always best not to look at the viewers (one may not identify with the lowlands of life), but turn his gaze away to the horizon of eternal power. This resembles, as nationalgallery writes in its description, a picture of a head in profile on a coin. After all, we don't want a guy staring at us on every penny, so the profile is better anyway. The insignia of power and precious fabrics are of course present. I like in these cases to hide the super important people entirely under this power stuff. But here I have additionally changed his direction of view. Now we assume he's looking at us, so I've taken him out of his untouchability. He may have forgotten it at that time: but he is also only one of us! . Hidden Catena, Photocollage 2021 . . Hidden Portraits are interventions via Photoshop in photos of historical portrait paintings. They are digital works. I cover the faces in different ways, but I do not add anything from the outside to the paintings. I only reshape individual elements of the painting itself, taking into account the special characteristics of the painting. The Hidden Portraits are a contemporary view of art history, of paintings as part of representation. 50. Grandpa Imagine you are in a room with 100 people. Somehow, everybody is assigned a number. 1 is the best person, 100 is the worst. What number do you think you would have, and why? In my painting “1-100”, I am capturing a sleuth of my friends displayed alongside their answer. When I asked my grandpa this question, it was quite brief. He responded with “well I think I would need more information”, and although it is not much of an answer, it is just as telling as every other answer I have received. My grandfather is a very humble, logical, and thorough man. Like his background in collegiate chemistry, he would not give a more opinionated answer unless he completely understood the hypothetical. I worked from a photograph (slide 4) I took of him dozing off at the most recent family Christmas gathering. We were watching the best grinch movie (only right answers in the comments). It was a pleasant surprise when I realized I could pop him on his side, permanently resting (or in thought) near the edge of this painting. I’m still working team! Autre souvenir du kunsthistorisches museum de Vienne. La spectaculaire salière du sculpteur Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571). Réalisée entre 1539 et 1543, de forme navette sur une base d’ébène ornée d’un décor en émail symbolisant les quatre saisons et les heures. Deux personnages se font faces, jambes croisées, Cybèle (qui porte bien son nom) d’une étonnante sensualité fait face au dieu Neptune tenant son trident assis sur un trône flanqué de chevaux marins. Cette remarquable pièce d’orfèvrerie commandée initialement par François 1er est un témoin du maniérisme de cette période. Elle fut offerte à l’archiduc Ferdinand du Tyrol par le roi de France Charles IX …. elle est restée dans les collections des Habsbourg avant d’intégrer le musée au XIXe siècle.
