My Dad intentionally put our Hawaiian names as our middle names in fear that we would experience racism like he did even into his adult years, especially him being half Hawaiian. He would tell me stories of the racism he experienced and I would sit there thinking to myself “at least those days are over” because I myself never experienced racism as a young Hawaiian and always felt racism wasn’t so prevalent here because we were a melting pot of hundreds of nationalities and cultures and learned how to get along with each other, sure there was racism and people would poke fun but I always thought it was nothing compared to the mainland. Today we have a nation of kanaka that have awoken, but with that, we have awoken the racist anti Hawaiians that my dad would tell me about and they want us to break kapu aloha so be steadfast kanaka. These are people that have come to Hawaii and are appalled to see Hawaiians in Hawaii doing Hawaiian things and fighting for Hawaiian rights and lands. People who hide behind fake accounts and computer screens to give us their honest opinions about how they feel about Hawaiians while they enjoy living in Hawaii, drinking the water, taking in the scenery, swimming in the ocean and hijacking the culture. All of those things they enjoy so much like the water they drink, the scenery they enjoy from their 40th floor penthouse or from an undeveloped plot of land, the ocean to swim in or the air they breathe, are all most likely there because a Hawaiian fought to protect it. This is why one of my favorite hula practiced in mauna protocol is ai ka mumu keke. A hula about cleansing the land with fire and lava so it can be rebuilt again.
