In Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach Walk (@embassywaikiki) effort to engage their guest and to reinforce their commitment to endemic & native reforestation, they planted a small rooftop garden of rare endemic and native plants. ALULA Possibly one of the strangest looking plants, a full head of succulent leaves crowns from the top of a stem – like a cabbage. This endemic Hawaiian plant is one of the rarest plants in the world, at least in the wilderness. The natural pollinator of the alula, a type of hawk moth, has become extinct—hampering the plant's ability to reproduce. Many steps have been taken to try and propagate it so that it can be reintroduced back to its native habitat in Hawaii. Embassyʻs Alula may be the only one in existence in Waikiki! IHI MOLOKINI (Portulaca molokiniensis) These endemic plants are federally endangered and are restricted to coastal rocky areas. These upright succulents are one of the most exotic looking plant specimens from Hawai’i PALAPALAI FERN Palapalai is a native fern and very important plant in Hawaiian culture, primarily for Hula. It is one of the plants Kapu (sacred) to Laka, the goddess of hula, it is also used to adorn the Hula altar and dancer as well and is highly sought after for making lei. Many songs and chants also refer to palapalai for its beauty and cultural importance. Careful, often retailers may be selling “palapalai” but it is not the native version. Aloha ‘Āina e Lāhui! Le’ale’a no! This past Saturday, our outreach team had fun with the Hāna & Maui community as we celebrated Earth week at the 28th annual East Maui Taro Fest in Hāna. Our booth provided hands-on environmental education opportunities. We shared the importance of native Hawaiian plants and forests. Keiki were engaged in identifying invasive bugs that threaten the viability of native plants and participated in cleaning & preparing ‘a’ali’i and wili wili seeds for propagation. Soon we will sow these hua (seeds) or create seed balls and mālama with lots of love at our plant nurseries. As the seeds begin to sprout, growing healthy and strong, the crew will transplant and kanu (plant) in the dryland forests of Leeward Haleakalā. As we all work together towards a healthy, sustainable way of life, Mary Kawena Pukui's Ōlelo No’eau #405, reminds us of the actions and valuable connections that were made in Hāna this past weekend, “Hāhai nō ka ua I ka ululā,” meaning "rain always follows the forest.” Without native forests, the capacity for capturing the limited precipitation that falls across Maui's leeward slopes is diminished. As we restore these forests, our goal is to restore the function of our watersheds, ecosystems, and the communities they support.
