Stargazing at Mauna Kea, Big Island, Hawaiʻi, is the tallest mountain in the world, towering 33,476 feet (10,204 meters) above its base on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. By comparison, the elevation of Mount Everest is 29,029 feet (8,848 meters). . Mauna Kea is 4,207.3 m above sea level, on this day it was 30 degrees celsius at sea level, and - 4 degrees celsius at the summit. Mauna Kea is over 1 million years old. . I visited Big Island, Hawaiʻi, in 2013. In this photo, the Mauna Kea Observatories (MKO) are a group of independent astronomical research facilities and large telescope observatories that are located at the summit. . The Big Island (officially named Hawaii) is the largest island in the United States Hawaiian archipelago in the Central Pacific. . Highlights of this trip were lava flowing into the ocean, swimming with 22 manta rays on a night snorkel hiking through ancient untouched rainforests, black sand beaches with 100’s of turtles lying around laying eggs, stargazing at Mauna Kea summit and the low human population left the island tranquil and peaceful. . . #maunakea #hawaii #bigisland #kukiaimauna #wearemaunakea #oahu #aoletmt #protectmaunakea #bigislandhawaii #volcano #hawaiilife #maunamajority #maunaloa #travel #kauai #luckywelivehawaii #hawaiistagram #sunset #puuhuluhulu #hawaiians #defendhawaii #kingdomofhawaii #maunaready #milkyway #stargazing #summit #stars #satelites

“The National Science Foundation @nsfgov is coming to town to ask what all should be studied for their upcoming Environmental Impact Statement for the TMT. The problem is, the meetings, the questions and the EIS itself are all in pursuit of the TMT and to this we have already said 'A'ole Loa. Messaging is being spread by the NSF that is similar to last week's problematic messaging by Lt. Governor Josh Green. That if they only engage us more, engage us better, and bring us into the process more meaningfully, that we will come to support the TMT on Maunakea. This ignores all of the messages and voices of the tens of thousands in the lāhui who have state unequivocally for many many years that construction is desecration and we will not stand for it. Period. We WILL stand again on the Mauna to stop construction if need be, no matter how many forms of "consultation" the TMT stakeholders put forward. We will continue to say 'A'ole Loa to the TMT. See graphics for meeting dates and locations. Stay tuned for more info and follow @puuhuluhulu and @ainamomona for information as well”. #repost @puuhuluhulu #kukiaimauna #aoletmt #tmtshutdown #protectmaunakea #maunakea #kapualoha #alohaaina #maunamajority

#OrganizarAutodefesaIndígena #DemarcaçãoEAutonomiaJá Posted @withregram • @puuhuluhulu The mismanagement of Maunakea by the state and the University of Hawai’i is well documented in the state’s own audits. In response to those audits, there have been many plans and plans for plans. Yet the mismanagement of the mauna has continued on. The latest “plan” by UH, can be found buried on page 206 of a 1962 page document. Here’s an exerpt: “The ongoing conflict surrounding the development of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) reflects the collision between different views. One of the views holds that astronomy on Maunakea is already over-developed and has been developed with too little regard for Native Hawaiian values and should therefore be scaled back or eliminated. Another view holds that the study of the heavens from Maunakea is both consistent with a traditional Hawaiian world view and practices and a worthy and important element of Hawai’i island’s current and future economic and educational base. Those that share the latter view tend to also desire a decrease in the island’s dependence on tourism by encouraging the kinds of research, educational, and technological opportunities that accompany astronomy. There is legitimacy to all visions for Maunakea." #repost @kanaeokana We disagree. Those in the former view share the same desire to decrease the island’s dependence on tourism in a SUSTAINABLE way that does not desecrate our Mauna. The #MaunaMajority disagrees. UH is downplaying the threat we pose and the movement we’ve built, trying to make a false equality between the two sides by stating that there is “legitimacy” to both views. We saw on the mauna, across our pae ʻāina, and across the world which view really holds more weight. At 8:30am TODAY, January 20, the UH Board of Regents will be meeting to discuss the plan. Lā 1,101 remembering and honoring all who stood on July 17, 2019 & everyone who supported throughout. Some of the kupuna & kia’i who were there on that day are gathered on the Mauna today to share, reflect, and celebrate the fact that there is still no construction of TMT on the Mauna. We remain committed to the Mauna always in all ways✊🏽❤️ . Repost from @kakoo_haleakala On July 17, 2019, law enforcement officers arrested 38 kūpuna (elders) who were peacefully protecting Maunakea from construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope. Maipoina, may we never forget that feeling we had three years ago when we watched this happen to our beloved kūpuna. These kanaka heroes sparked the most significant modern movement and unification of our lāhui. Some of the kupuna and kia'i who were there are gathered on the mauna today to share their reflections of the events that led to the moments which became known as the 'kupuna arrests.' Although I am caring for my parents and preparing my girls for their journey to Holaniku, my heart is with you on the mauna and I'll be remembering and sharing today from here. It's January 26th, 🇦🇺 Australia Day. On this day in 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip and his 🇬🇧 British First Fleet established the first European settlement in the Commonwealth of Australia at Port Jackson, now part of Sydney. After Phillip's fledgling colony overcame a period of initial hardship, the settlers began to celebrate January 26th with great fanfare as the anniversary of the birth of "modern" Australia.    Of course, indigenous Aborigines had already been well established in all parts of Australia for 65,000 to 70,000 years – from the 🦜 rainforests in the north to the 🌵 deserts in the interior and the 🐧 sub-Antarctic island of Tasmania in the south. The 🎨 artistic, 🥁 musical, and 🧙🏿‍♂️ spiritual traditions they established are among the oldest surviving such traditions on the planet. It's understandable, then, that not all Australians treat Australia Day as an occasion to celebrate. Indigenous Australians have long referred to this date as ⚔️ “Invasion Day” or “National Day of Mourning.” Many observe counter-celebrations as they grieve for their ancestors who suffered and perished during colonization. It always sparks controversial debate.   For that reason, the focus of Australia Day has evolved over the years. The holiday now serves as a day of national unity, on the one hand, it’s filled with a variety of community and 👨‍👨‍👧‍👦 family events, presentations of national 🎖️ awards, and ceremonies welcoming new Australian citizens. But the day is also infused with deep respect for Aboriginal culture. Each year, the Australian government renews its praise and admiration for the original inhabitants of the land in hopes that all Australians will come together and celebrate the nation as a multicultural society. Happy Australia Day! ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet #Jamiese #Pixoplanet #RedBubble #TeePublic #POD #PrintOnDemand #southaustralia #originalnation #aussiehome #manamahu #videoglasses #maunamoments #nativeamerican #australiaday #westernaustralia #imauna #protectmaunakea #goldcoast #perfection #aboriginal #maunamajority #nativeamericanprincess #koalalove #indigenouspeopleday #terriirwin #nativeartist #sandiegozoo #indigenousartist

It's December 29th. On this day in 1890, 🇺🇸 US troops 🩸 massacred over 200 🛶 Native Americans at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota.  In the late 1880s, the mood on Native American reservations was one of desperation and despair. The US Government had been confiscating Native Americans’ lands and cutting their food rations. In 1889, a Paiute tribesman named Wovoka had a vision that if the Native Americans appealed to the Great Spirit by daily performing the sacred Ghost Dance, their white oppressors would disappear, and Native Americans would once again rule the Great Plains.  Ghost Dance performances quickly spread. The Army tried to stop the practice, but the Native Americans persevered – even after the police killed Chief Sitting Bull. The US 7th Cavalry forced Chief Spotted Elk and his Sioux tribe to go to Wounded Knee Creek where the soldiers could easily keep watch over them. On December 29th, 1890, the soldiers tried to disarm the Sioux. One man resisted, and the others began to dance. The soldiers opened fire. Within minutes, over 200 Native Americans were dead – including many women, children, and babies.  Typical of the times, the American public approved of the massacre to avenge the 7th Cavalry's defeat and General George Custer's killing at the Battle of Little Bighorn four years earlier. Twenty soldiers received the 🎖️ Medal of Honor, the US military’s highest and most prestigious commendation, for their actions at Wounded Knee. Thankfully, Wounded Knee is not touted as a victory against an intractable enemy anymore, but is mourned as an outright massacre. Today, legislators and activists are calling on President Joe Biden to revoke those fetid medals. It’s the right thing to do, Mr. President. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet #Jamiese #Pixoplanet #RedBubble #TeePublic #POD #PrintOnDemand #cherokeenation #decolonizeyourlables #nativeamericanindians #nativefoodscafe #indigenousamerican #kiai #indigenouscanada #nativesummer #iuic #nativeculture #nativeamericaninspired #kukiaimauna #maunamajority #indigenouspeoplesrights #indigenousfood #maunamoments #honorthetreaties #nativeamericanpride #southdakota #nodakotaaccesspipeline #lakota #moors

When life gets rough I play this and it reminds me of how it is back home in Hawai’i! It shows what ohana, what life, what the real true meaning of blessed is. As kanaka we have a connection to our ‘aina and the life that is sustained by it. Here Kumu Frank Kawaikapuokalani explains what makes our connection to the Honu special. Come down to Laniakea tomorrow and make sure we preserve that connection for our future generations. #landback #beachtakeover . . . . . . #tillthelastalohaaina #hula #defendhawaii #defendmaunakea #kiai #kukiaiaina #1893 #kukiaihawaii #kukiaimauna #wearemaunakea #maunakea #alohaaina #protectmaunakea #hawaiian #hawaii #thequeenscourt #hawaiiankingdom #kapualoha #photography #maunamajority #maukatomakai #maunaready #kue #keephawaiianlandsinhawaiianhands #aoletmt #tmtshutdown @protectmaunakea @puuhuluhulu @defendhawaii @mahinadahui808 @jimmy_up @healanipale @dahuiofficial @greg.noir @malae.mcelheny @steffyleethatsmee

A couple weeks before all the buzz hit social media about people harassing the seals, I was driving up to the north shore and when I got to the eastern end of Haleiwa town I got stuck in traffic. I already knew it was because of the madness at Laniakea with tourists and buses slowing down to see what’s going on or people crossing the road to get to the beach. Then as I passed I was disgusted by this group of about 30 people surrounding a honu on the shoreline trying to get their pictures and in affect, blocking this turtle from making his way out of the water and onto the sand to rest if it wanted to. Also the amount of tourists on the beach makes it unappealing to any locals that might want to use the beach, which is a message I’ve heard echo on all of our beaches from friends. After witnessing all this, I texted @jimmy_up and told him we need to go a beach take over to reclaim and educate. A week later he let me crash a meeting with @healanipale , Maelani Lee and Mike Honukaina to bring this idea to the table. And here we are now, a few days away from the event and throughout the planning process we’ve been humbled to have community members like @mahinadahui808 and @malae.mcelheny and @steffyleethatsmee bringing their mana’o, talents and resources to make this event echo its message throughout the state. Join us this Sunday to make a strong loud statement to the state . We need to get tourism under control. This is a root cause for many problems we are trying to address not just in Laniakea but on all our islands. Mahalo to all the people that have been helping 🤙🏾🙏🏾🤙🏾🙏🏾 Bring your flags and line them down the beach and on your cars! Hope to see you all there! #landback #beachtakeover . . . . . . #tillthelastalohaaina #hula #defendhawaii #kiai #kukiaiaina #1893 #kukiaihawaii #kukiaimauna #wearemaunakea #maunakea #alohaaina #protectmaunakea #hawaiian #hawaii #thequeenscourt #hawaiiankingdom #kapualoha #photography #maunamajority #maukatomakai #maunaready #kue #keephawaiianlandsinhawaiianhands #aoletmt #tmtshutdown @protectmaunakea @puuhuluhulu @defendhawaii @mahinadahui808 @jimmy_up @healanipale @steffyleethatsmee @blakemcelheny

Didn’t get to go to La Ho’iho’i Ea this year but here are pictures from last year. It makes me so proud to see my ‘ohana participate in these things. It’s the reason I do what I do, to make sure there’s a hawai’i for them in the future. So they can be proud of doing these things as they grow up and make sure our culture is alive and well long after I’m gone. . . . . . . #tillthelastalohaaina #lahoihoiea #sovereigntyrestorationday #kukiaimauna #wearemaunakea #maunakea #alohaaina #protectmaunakea #kapualoha #maunamajority #maukatomakai #maunaready #keephawaiianlandsinhawaiianhands #aoletmt #tmtshutdown @protectmaunakea @puuhuluhulu @defendhawaii @wearemaunakea
