Aloha Monday! Mahina Lāʻau Kamaʻāina is just about finished and it was wonderful seeing all the posts supporting our native flora. It was also great to interact with everyone at the events PEPP attended this month! Apart from field work and outreach events, our team has been preparing for the upcoming @centerforplantconservation 2024 National Meeting. To continue our celebration of Earth month, we hosted an outreach table at the 17th Annual Mauka to Makai Expo and Fish Release at the Waikīkī Aquarium last Saturday! 2,349 attendees stopped by this free event to see the aquarium exhibits and to engage with all of the participating outreach booths to learn about environmental conservation and marine stewardship! We loved sharing our invasive and native algae samples, projects and initiatives, and ocean facts with the community! No precipitation will stop us from education! 👏 Although we had to cancel the canoe tours on Friday, our Hoʻākea Mauka to Makai activities continued. Our organizations split forces and visited each elementary school in West Oʻahu. Nā Kama Kai had the opportunity to connect with keiki at Duane’s elementary school at Mākaha, where he attended Kindergarten to 6th grade. Our team led ʻāina stations, ocean safety lessons, and waʻa kaulua stations with the fourth graders. 2 days of Ho‘ākea Mauka to Makai was awesome! Mahalo nui to @malamalearningcenter and @nakamakai for including us on this beautiful voyage! Day one really showed me that a community with real aloha for our culture, traditions and one another can withstand any weather! Through heavy rains, thunder and lightning we pulled it together and made it happen. 15 malama aina organizations and our wa‘a teams had spread out to share our ike with haumana at their schools across the whole coast. We focused on sharing about different plant fibers. We demonstrated the process of making kapa and weaving lauhala. Participants got to make a lauhala heart pin, clean hala fruit and take them home as paint brushes and we also had some lauhala available to clean and prepare. Weʻll be having a potluck lunch to follow! ‘Ohana, community members and visitors of all ages are welcomed! Come prepared to get muddy! Bring water and snacks, sun protection, hand tools, weed eaters, dry change of clothes, and something to share for lunch. Tasks may include weeding in the taro patch and ‘auwai, weed eating banks, preparing new patches, planting huli, and harvesting depending on what needs to be done that day and the size and interest of the group. Kapahu Living Farm is located the Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park. Look for a dirt road mauka just on Hana side of Oheʻo Stream bridge in Haleakala National Park. A sign will be posted. (If coming from Hana direction, go past the Mother Mary shrine and then around the corner and down the hill, then look for the road on the right. If coming from the Kaupo direction, go past the national park parking lot and Ohe’o bridge, then look for the road on the left.) The road is somewhat rough, so if your vehicle has low clearance, please contact us ahead of time and we can arrange for someone to meet you at the bottom of the road where you can park. Aloha Monday and Happy Native Hawaiian Plant Month! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend with your loved ones! If you happened to adopt a rabbit* this Easter, today's species may make a perfect name. Bryophytes in the genus Syrrhopodon can be found throughout the eastern Pacific, New World, Africa, and Madagascar, with Hawai‘i representing the Western most extent of its range (Ellis 2018). There are 4 species found in Hawai‘i with one endemic species, S. kilaueae. Being native Hawaiian plant month, we would have liked to highlight S. kilaueae, but unfortunately, we don't have any images 😅 So instead, we're focusing on the indigenous species Syrrhopodon gaudichaudii! This bryophyte has been described from sea level all the way up to 2500 m in elevation, growing on tree trunks, fallen logs, soil, and rock (Reese 1993). They form loose to dense clumps, are dark-green but with pale lower laminae and purple rhizoids. Leaves are 2-3.5 mm long, falcate and folded when hydrated, and strongly crisped when dried. The costa is smooth until the shoulder when it then becomes acutely toothed until the apex; a distinguishing factor between S. gaudichaudii and the other species found in the islands. You may need a loupe to see the details, but keep an eye out for this cute moss on your next hike 🌿 And we look forward to everyone's mea kanu posts this month! *Don't forget that rabbits can cause major environmental damage, so please be responsible and don't release them into the wild! Our team joined the Tree to Sea Campers with @protectandpreservehawaii and @malamamaunalua on Friday morning in the beautiful Pia Valley. We helped the campers with a native plant scavenger hunt, identifying the diverse local flora around them. The campers were eager to understand the layers of the forest, discovering which species belonged to each layer and its importance in collecting water for the aquifer. It was a bit more difficult to identify the layers than one would think, due to some native flora still being young plants. To boost their understanding of the differentials between plants, the ATA team encouraged the campers to embrace their inner artist and draw the plants they saw. Here at ATA, we feel grateful to be a part of the efforts to educate these flourishing forest stewards. Aloha Monday! Beaches lined with coconut trees are an iconic image of Hawai‘i, but if you look up mauka, you may also be blessed with the sights of our native loulu. Both of these palms, along with many other important cultural and agricultural species, are heavily impacted by the spread of CRB: coconut rhinoceros beetles. With the beetles spreading beyond O‘ahu to Kaua‘i, and detections on Maui and Hawai‘i Island, we want to highlight some of the 23 species of loulu we are working to protect. This month, we're moving to Moloka‘i where they have 4 species of loulu, one of which is Pritchardia munroi. This species, like P. viscosa on Kaua‘i, is known from less than 10 wild mature individuals. These plants are distributed between populations on Moloka‘i and West Maui in mesic forests around 600-1000 m in elevation. They can grow up to 5 m in height with a trunk diameter of around 20 cm (Wagner et al.). Leaves can reach 88 cm from base to apex, upper surface pale green and glabrous, lower surfaces with scattered hyaline, and scurfy scales. The leaf segments have long acuminate drooping points with filaments scattered between. It's noted that this loulu is unique in having inflorescence branches covered in hairs like larger species such as P. forbesiana and P. lanigera, but fruit that are small and globose like that of P. remota and P. hillebrandii. Moloka‘i hasn't had any CRB detections, but considering the rarity of this PEPP species, our teams are working hard to ensure all individuals are represented in ex situ collections! Aloha Monday! ʻĀwiwi, Schenkia sebaeoides, don't fall under PEPP's official category of fewer than 50 remaining in the wild, but they are still federally listed as endangered and a species we keep an eye on. These tiny plants are one of our few native annuals and only occur in dry, coastal zones on Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Moloka‘i and West Maui. The stems can grow solitary or branch from the bottom, but almost always branching close to the inflorescence. ʻĀwiwi leaves are somewhat fleshy, obovate, 3-nerved, and often clasping to the stem (Wagner et al). The flowers occur in elongate spike-like cymes with white to pale pink flowers. This is one distinguishing factor between ʻāwiwi and the non native bitter herb, Centaurium erythraea, which have pinkish lavender flowers. This species can be relatively prolific after heavy seasonal rains, but drying trends, increasing levels of non-native species, and habit loss are heavily impacting their populations. Making collections of these now helps to ensure we don't lose Hawai‘i's only native gentian! If coming from the Kaupo direction, go past the national park parking lot and Ohe’o bridge, then look for the road on the left.)
