On my last day working up Mauna Kea, I sowed several hundred mฤmane seeds that we had collected the previous week with volunteers from the Bonner Program. We harvested dried seedpods from several trees -- you can see a pod that was naturally dehiscing (opening) while still attached to a tree in the third pic. Back indoors, we opened the pods by hand and scarified each individual seed by snipping a small part of their seed coat with nail clippers. This allows water to penetrate the seed embryo more readily, speeding germination time. I then soaked them overnight to get that process started, and placed them in dibble tubes the next morning. Hoping these babies grow tall and strong, Kลซ energy all da way ๐ โ As mentioned in a previous post, our endemic palila birds (Loxioides bailleui) rely on undeveloped mฤmane seeds as a staple part of their diet. They specifically eat the seed embryo, disposing of the seed coat which contains high levels of nondigestible fiber. However, the embryos contain high levels of toxic alkaloids -- powerful enough to kill other birds, should they attempt the same dining activity! At the same time, these embryos are nutritionally rich. It never ceases to boggle my mind that these manu evolved to eat something potentially lethal; what total badasses. Yet recent counts suggestion palila populations may be as low as 300 individuals, making their plight especially dire. We desperately need to save their numbers, lest we never hear their sweet songs again... โ Although there are great article on the toxicity of the immature seeds, I'm not entirely sure whether the mature seeds are quite as dangerous. What I do know is that soaking the seeds left the water a distinctively yellow tint, which dyed my hands while sowing them (did not get a photo, sadly). In the future, I would love to soak enough seeds to have plenty of water to experiement with for dye! Yesterday was my last day of work and I totally cried ๐ญ These past five months helping steward the mea kanu of Mauna Kea was... honestly, far, far more healing than I could have ever expected. I took this position knowing I would enjoy it -- plus working part time has allowed me a nice balance of regular income while pursuing my creative passions -- but I had no idea just *how* beneficial putting my hands in this dusty lepo would be. I have started dreaming again. I am sleeping better. Creative juices are oh-so-much jucier. I have returned to myself, by returning to the land. Nothing compares with revivification through mฤlama สปฤina. There are so many raw emotions I want to share... but I'm still not in a space to place my bleeding heart on a virtual pedestal for all the internet to see. My wellbeing is a work in progress; this hana has provided an unparalleled foundation upon which to build myself back up. I can only hope that I have given even half as much as I have received, that the goodness I experienced has similarly been wrought by my own hands. TWO TELESCOPES & ONLY ONE WILL WIN THE$1.6 BILLION IN FUNDING - WILL IT BE TMT OR GMT? - FreeHawaii.Info #AoleTMT #ProtectMaunaKea #KuKiaiMauna #FreeHawaii #HawaiianKingdom Science.org - February 28, 2024 U.S. astronomers will have to make do with one giant ground-based telescope rather than the desired two, the National Science Board (NSB) announced yesterday. Meeting last week, the panel of scientists that oversees the National Science Foundation (NSF) capped the budget of the U.S. Extremely Large Telescope Program (US-ELTP) at $1.6 billion, enough for a substantial share in one 30-meter class telescope. But US-ELTP represents the interests of two such projectsโthe Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) in Chile and the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) in Hawaiiโwhich are building components but not fully funded. The board has given NSF until May to come up with a process to choose the lucky winner.... So in 2018 the two projects joined forces as US-ELTP and made a joint offer to NSF: a share in both telescopes that would give U.S. astronomers two complementary giant instruments covering both hemispheres, something that Europeโs Extremely Large Telescope, rapidly taking shape in Chile, could not do. NSF carried out preliminary design reviews on both projects, which the agency approved in early 2023, but the estimated costs continued to balloon. Each telescope now has a price tag approaching $3 billion, which would make just one of them the costliest project NSF had ever undertaken. In an editorial in Science in November 2023, Turner argued that insisting that NSF fund two telescopes put both projects at risk. At its meeting on 22 February, NSB acknowledged the ambition and vision of the US-ELTP proposal but noted it would take up 80% of NSFโs funding for major projects. As NSB could not condone starving other fields, it set the $1.6 billion cap and tasked NSF with setting out a plan for choosing a telescope and its subsequent timeline by the boardโs next meeting in May.

John De Fries has made clear his position regarding his support of the building of the Thirty Meter Telescope. Mauna Kea has been galvanizing for those who stand in protection of what is sacred. The movement to protect Mauna Kea has been important in bringing together those who want a new future for Hawaiโi rather than the old paradigms and frameworks that are unsustainable. Generations of genetic memory, contained within a solitary seed. Inert as they may appear, these tiny capsules of evolution and knowledge thrum with life. โ These are the fruits of naสปenaสปe, our endangered Dubautia arborea. While they may appear to be seeds, in truth, they are fruits called achenes -- small, dry, indehiscent fruits containing a solitary seed. Easily recognizable examples of achenes include the billowy fruits of dandelions, and the "seeds" of strawberries (the fleshy red part of the strawberry isn't the fruit, it's merely a receptacle for the achenes! Whip that one out at your next trivia night). โ Indehiscence refers to the fact that these fruits do not open to release their seeds without some degree of decomposition, first. Patience is required. The feathery portion of the achene is a pappus, which allows these tiny fruits to be easily scattered by the wind. โ This species of naสปenaสปe is only found at high elevations on Mauna Kea and Hualฤlai, making it's range extremely limited. It is endangered due to the usual suspects: ungulate grazing being primary, along with environmental disturbance caused by invasive plants, wildfire, development, and climate change. โ As I sowed these fruits and their seeds in the greenhouse, I sang to them. I reminded them how strong and capable they are, how big they can one day be, just like the parent tree from they were born.
