Sirak Melkonian His figurative works drew attention to his art and brought him the Imperial Court Prize at the Tehran Biennale in 1958 for his works, including his linocuts. His figurative works were appreciated and found at the Paris Biennale (1959), Venice Biennale (1958), after he had previously won the Contemporary Iranian Artist Exhibition of the Iran American Society (1957). In the early 1960’s Melkonian began focusing more specifically towards abstraction in his work, and became a leading figure in the Iranian art scene, due to his successes at home and internationally. In 1961, Melkonian was part of the exhibition hosted at Saderat Bank in Tehran (alongside, Marcos Grigorian, Bijan Saffari, Sohrab Sepehri, Manucher Sheybani and Parviz Tanavoli) which drew the support and attention of Iranian arts patron Abby Grey. Sirak Melkonian Sirak Melkonian is considered to be one of the founders of the Iranian-Armenian modern art movement, and is a true pioneer of Iranian modernism. Melkonian is well known for his abstract paintings, often of a topographical nature, but began his career, like many other painters, using figuration as his primary stylistic trait in his drawings, prints and paintings. He then began experimenting with other Iranian modernists, as a reaction to the older generation of Iranian artists. “THE MORE THEY TRY TO ERASE US THE MORE VISIBLE WE BECOME” December 21, 2023 Alysse Stepanian (Swipe left for more images)… 1/2: In this poster, I’ve incorporated the Armenian Tree of Life with pomegranates from the bas-relief on the 10th Century Armenian Cathedral on Lake Van. The Cathedral of the Holy Cross (Սուրբ Խաչ եկեղեցի) was built on the Aghtamar or Akhtamar (Ախթամար) Island, now part of eastern Turkey. In 915-921 it served as a palatine church for the kings of Vaspurakan. Between 1116 -1895 it was the seat of the Catholicosate of Aghtamar of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Based on an old Armenian legend, “an Armenian princess named Tamar lived on the island and was in love with a commoner. This boy would swim from the shore to the island each night, guided by a light she lit for him.” One night her enraged father smashed her light, and the boy, lost in the dark, drowned. When his body was washed ashore, “it appeared as if the words “Akh, Tamar” (Oh, Tamar) were frozen on his lips”. In 908-943/944 the island was one of the residences of King Gagik I Artsruni. “He founded a settlement and erected a large square palace richly decorated with frescoes, built a dock noted for its complex hydrotechnical engineering, laid out streets, gardens, and orchards, and planted trees and designed areas of recreation for himself and his court”. The only surviving structure from the monastic complex is this pink cathedral, built of volcanic tuff by the architect-monk Manuel, based on the dome with a conical roof design that had been developed in Armenia centuries earlier. The building is adorned with unique and beautiful bas-relief carvings, with an interior measuring 14.80 m x 11.5 m and the dome reaching 20.40 m above the ground. In April 1915, during the Armenian genocide, the monks on Akhtamar were massacred, the cathedral looted, and the monastic buildings destroyed. 🔔Неделю назад выступал c короткой лекцией на тему арт-медиации и наконец представил пусть и черновой вариант, но с очерченными контурами того, что по задумке будет погружать зрителя в медиативное - медитативное состояние, открывающее чувства, слова и смыслы при созерцании произведения. 💬От зрителей прозвучал вопрос: а какая цель арт-медиации? Разве не следует с помощью арт-медиации стимулировать участников? 🧐Я же обратил внимание на слово «стимуляция» и ответил, что стимуляция подразумевает намерение относительно другого человека, чтобы достичь результата. Уж извините за этот пошлый пример, но, конечно, здесь синонимична аналогия с лже-интимной близостью: любить друг друга (или как говорят “заниматься любовью”), не тоже самое, что стимулировать органы друг у друга. 🎯Есть ли цель у любви? (не важно в широком смысле или в каком-то узком, определенном) То есть разве мы «принимаем участие»в любви с какой то целью? 🌈Моё мнение: лично у меня нет цели кого либо стимулировать во время арт-медиации. Я обнаруживаю радость, красоту, которая открывается в каждом человеке при продолжительном контакте с произведением искусства. Появляются будоражущие воображения образы, речь становится поэтической. Возможно ли стимуляция подобного? Нет, поскольку речь идет о произведении души свободного человека. Свободного, в том числе, от стимуляции.

մենք MENK visite d'atelier @grigoryan.sevak Sevak Grigoryan (1979 Erevan - Arménie). En 1990 il étudie au Centre Républicain de l'Éducation Esthétique de Erevan avec le “Groupe des studieux de la Sculpture” et continue son parcours de formation auprès du lycée artistique P. Terlemezyan”. En 2003 il passe son diplôme en sculpture à l'Académie de Beaux-arts de Erevan. En 2009 il part en Italie et obtient le diplôme en sculpture à l’Académie de Beaux-arts de Florence. Ensuite, il part à Rome où il entre à l’Ecole de l’Art de la Médaille de l’Institut polygraphique et Hôtel de la Monnaie d’Italie, lieu où il découvre des techniques qui vont au delà de la sculpture en se rapprochant de plus en plus à l’alchimie de la matière. Pendant sa carrière les expositions sont nombreuses. Même s’il vit depuis longtemps à l’étranger, il ne perd pas le lien avec son Pays d’origine l’Arménie mais ce sera à Rome qu’il rendra un hommage à sa terre natale avec “1915”, œuvre dédiée au génocide arménien. One of the largest exhibitions currently on view in Yerevan is the jubilee show dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Yerevan Museum of Modern Art, founded in 1972 by the then bad-boy of the Armenian cultural scene Henrik Igityan. Almost scandalous at first, the museum quickly became part of the establishment as it began to ‘classicize’ contemporary artists into a sort of a future pantheon of modern greats without paying much heed to issues of contemporary art itself. In that sense, this was already an outmoded institution even before its opening and its confusion as to what exact function or objective it has is all too evident in the current display. The present exhibition has been arranged in the halls of the ex-foreign ministry building on the Republic Square and features many works rarely if ever displayed in the museum itself. While impressive in scope and the number of true masterpieces if possesses, this collection exposes its fundamental lack of conceptual frameworks or methodology. All manner of works - from the neo-realist Mexican series by Grigor Khanjyan and naive art by Hayk Zakaryan to post-sculptural installations by Samvel Baghdasaryan and feminist video art by Armine Hovhannisyan have somehow found their place next to works by weighty classics of modernist art such as Minas Avetisyan and Hakob Hakobyan. The mottled, seemingly color-coded (!) hang only makes the already complex and ambivalent narrative of Armenian modern and contemporary art even more confusing and incoherent. And there is so much to clarify and make sense of here… all that paradoxical wavering between freedom and conservatism, the wish to resist totalitarianism and patriarchy without resorting to direct confrontation, fear of losing one’s identity and the desire to be part of the bigger world, the perpetual obsession with unique subjectivity and the often astonishing unwillingness to see reality through a critical prism.
