This is probably only mildly interesting to most folks, but I thought I'd share anyway. The first image here is the same Heart Nebula data set I shared previously, but with dark frame calibration applied. This means I used dark images which are used to balance out any kind of electronic or thermal noise that might occur on the camera sensor. For those of you who are newer to sensor verbiage, image noise is essentially signal which the sensor picks up which did not come from actual light photons, so it is not part of the actual image. It can come from electric current or heat. With astrophotography, we expose the sensor to a lot more data, as our targets are much more faint than a typical photography subject, which in turn can create more noise. Me, being a dingus, thought I could get away with not taking dark frames, because my astro camera has been so much better than the images I took of deep space with my fancy regular mirrorless camera. However, being the nerd I am, I wanted to see if this was actually the case. So I processed my nebula exposures with dark frames (first image), without dark frames (second image), and the third image is the original image I shared. First thing, I'm just getting better at processing these images, which you can see in the first two images, compared to the third. Second, it's very, very faint, but using dark frames in this case gave me a good bit more contrast in the first image. I'm pretty sure that the first image being so close to the second image is due to how simple my exposures are (just a single narrowband filter, no additional SII or other data), and I think this will be much more important when I add SII or move to mono. Nébuleuse Pacman (NGC281) - traitement HOO | Buis-les-Baronnies - FR (26) | 21-10-23 @ 20h45 Enfin la 1ere photo réalisée avec la FRA400 sous un bon ciel ! 😊 Surnommée "Pacman" en raison de son aspect rappelant le célèbre personnage de jeu vidéo, cette nébuleuse de la constellation de Cassiopée est située à environ 10.000 AL. D'environ 100 AL de large cette région émet notamment dans les raies Hα (rouge) et OIII (vert-bleu), cible idéale pour le filtre L-extreme. On peut noter : - l'étoile multiple HD5005 assez centrale et principale responsable de l'ionisation de cet hydrogène/oxygène environnant, - de nombreux globules de Bok (tâches noires dans la nébuleuse) susceptibles d'abriter la formation d'étoiles. Cette astrophotographie a été l'occasion de mon premier prétraitement / traitement astrophotographie avec le logiciel PixInsight. S'agissant d'une première pour moi, j'ai passé de nombreuses d'heures à faire des essais/erreurs pour le traitement de cette photo. Autant que possible, j'ai essayé de me pas verser dans les excès (réduction du bruit notamment) pour ne pas trop dégrader le signal. Pour info, il s'agit d'une composition HOO en Drizzle 2x.
