This is a Strikingly polychromed handmade wooden carving of lord garuda of 1800’s from thanjavur , Tamilnadu, south India . Garuda is regarded as the king of birds in Indian theology. He is a very powerful celestial being who is also the mount of supreme god Vishnu. This wooden work is of Garudavahana or of Garuda as a mount. Vahana is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘mount in English. Garuda is seen in ready-to-fly position with his wings upraised, one foot and one knee placed firmly on ground and waiting upon Vishnu. His hands are spread in anticipation, ready to be placed under Vishnu’s feet after he sits on his shoulders. A primitively carved Celtic stone head from Yorkshire mounted on later plinth. A captivating naive Celtic work of art. Three-dimensional and free standing. Celtic expert Dr Anne Ross writes that the symbol of the severed human head is as representative of the Celtic religion as is the Cross in Christian contexts :’The Celts, like many other barbarian peoples, hunted human heads. We know this from the skulls found in Celtic hill-forts. These severed heads would serve as trophies testifying to the military prowess of their owner; and, at the same time, powers believed to be inherent in the human head would act protectively and keep evil from the fortress or the home, while ensuring positive good luck and success.’ Later repurposed upon a secondary plinth to surmount a wall or a gate as a finial as a Gatekeeper. Wonderfully time-worn sandstone. With deeply set eyes, the upper and lower eyelids joined into ovals. A furrowed brow and once parallel sided nose. The hair was deeply naturalistically carved with shell shaped ears. Remaining are the outlines of a small scalloped collar shape at the nape of the neck. The right side of the slightly upturned smiling mouth bears an unexplained feature seen in numerous Celtic heads, a hole the diameter of a pencil or ‘cigarette hole’ (red Celtic expert Sidney Jackson and Dr Anne Ross’ “Celtic and Other Stone Heads”). One of my favorite finds lately! The graphics on this 1930’s MYSTIO MAGIC game box are to die for! It appears most if not all the parts are still included in this magic kit game. There are some losses to the cover lid around the edges, but otherwise it has really held up for its age. The game brand is highly collectible and known for detailed box cover graphics. VINTAGE THEYYAM BREASTPLATE During the annual Theyyam festival in Kerala, male performers wear a breast and torso plate as part of their elaborate attire. The breastplate adds to their transformation into the revered deities Bhagwati or Bhadrakali, the Mother Goddesses (Devi) worshipped in Kerala. Bhadrakali is considered an auspicious and fortunate form of Kali and is generally regarded as the consort of Shiva in his Rudra manifestation. There are over three hundred types of Theyyam. The knowledge of this ritual dance tradition is also inherited by male descendants of performers. This traditional, vintage breastplate is sculpted from bronze and is subtly detailed with cobras. Snakes, associated with Shiva, are also considered a symbol of fertility. These dolls may be fashioned from such materials as a carved root, grain or corn shafts, a fruit, paper, wax, a potato, clay, branches, or cloth stuffed with herbs with the intent that any actions performed upon the effigy will be transferred to the subject based on sympathetic magic. There is also more of a sinister way to design these poppets.
