As a teenager he was introduced into high society in which most of his plays would be set. Coward achieved enduring success as a playwright , publishing more than 50 plays from his teens onwards. A Letter by Winston Churchill Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, (1874-1965), was a British politician, statesman, army officer, historian, writer and painter. He was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, during the Second World War and again from 1951 to 1955. Apart from two years between 1922 and 1924 Churchill was a Member of Parliament from 1900 to 1964. Churchill was born in Oxford shire to a wealthy aristocratic family. Churchill took the lead in calling for British rearmament to counter the growing threat of militarism from Nazi Germany. In May 1940, he became Prime Minister replacing Neville Chamberlain. After victory in 1945 he became leader of the opposition. Amid the developing Cold War with the Soviet Union he publicly warned of an “Iron Curtain “and promoted European unity. With declining health Churchill resigned as Prime Minister in 1955. Upon his death in 1965 he received a state funeral. Widely considered one of the 20th century's most significant figures he is seen as a victorious wartime leader who played an important role defending Europe’s democracies against the spread of fascism. Letter and photo to Robert Osborne Robert Osborne was an actor, film historian, author and wrote an official biography of the Oscars. He had a five times weekly column in Hollywood Reporter and was host of TCM. He had a star on the Hollywood Walk of fame. Died in March 2017. Stephen Sondheim and Robert Osborne belonged to a mutual admiration society: Osborne admired Sondheim's talent as a composer and lyricist and Sondheim admired Osborne's encyclopedic knowledge of film history. Both were avid film buffs who fed each other's obsession with recommendations, behind-the-scenes stories, and many, many exchanges of DVDs. Sondheim was a loyal fan of Turner Classic Movies, often complimenting Osborne on the "intros" and "outros" that he presented before and after each film, as well as on his appearance, calling him "a latter day Benjamin Button." Sondheim was not, however, above correcting Osborne when he mispronounced someone's name or was inaccurate in his facts. Sondheim's letters are peppered with questions about various films and movie references, and he expresses appreciation for the many films Osborne sent him. This letter is dated October 17th 1995, in this letter Sondheim talks about challenging each other on movie trivia when they next meet. Matthew Groening (Matt) (1954-) is an American cartoonist, writer, producer and animator. He is the creator of the comic strip , Life in Hell (1977-2012) and the television series The Simpsons (1989-present).The Simpsons is the longest running US prime time television series in history and the longest running US animated series and sitcom. He caught the attention of James L Brooks who in 1985 wanted him to adapt his Life in Hell characters for the Tracey Ullman show. Groening decided to create something new and came up with a cartoon family which he called, The Simpsons. He named the members of the family after his own parents and sisters whilst Bart was an anagram of the word Brat.The Simpsons has since aired 698 episodes. He has won 13 primetime Emmy Awards and many other awards. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. She wrote "The story of the Trapp Family singers" which was published in 1949 and was the inspiration for the 1956 German film “ The Trapp Family”, which, in turn, inspired the 1959 Broadway Musical and the 1965 film “The Sound of Music”. Manachem Begin (1913-1992) Israeli politician, founder of Likud and the sixth Prime Minister of Israel. Before the creation of the State he was the leader of the militant group lrgun. He became Prime Minister in 1977. His most significant achievement was the signing of a Peace Treaty with Egypt in 1979 for which he and Anwar Sadat shared the Nobel Prize for Peace. Following pressure due to Israeli involvement in Lebanon, he resigned in 1983. John Edgar Hoover (1895-1972) Was an American law Enforcement administrator who served as the first Director of the Federal Bureau Of Investigation (F.B.I.) He remained Director until his death in 1972. During his tenure he established a National Blacklist. After his death abuses of power began to surface including harassment of political dissenters and activists and amassing secret files on political leaders. He also collected evidence by illegal means. He had used his powers to intimidate and threaten others including sitting Presidents. This letter dated August 28th 1957, is on Federal Bureau of Investigation letterhead. It is written to a Henry B Donovan stating that the F.B.I. cannot participate in any manner in a series of television programmes concerning the Special Intelligence Services. ( The S.I.S was active from 1940-1946 and was a covert counter intelligence branch of the F.B.I. located in South America.) It reads: “Thank you ,Ian for your nicely written letter and all your interesting news. I am so glad you like my books, especially the Adventure series. There are 8 of those so far and I hope one day to write the 9th, Love from/Enid Blyton “ Enid Blyton has been in The Guinness Book of Records as one of the world's biggest selling writers. She is also included because she wrote more books than almost any other writer (about 700). Her books were published in many different languages. She said that she found writing them easy. In the last few years of her life she had presenile dementia. Her books still sell in large numbers, and the rights used to be owned by her family. A few years ago her family sold them, and now her works belong to a private company. Buddy Holly Signed Lyrics This work consists of two extremely rare items of Buddy Holly memorabilia. A Postcard handwritten and signed by Buddy, addressed in his own hand to his parents Mr and Mrs L.O. Holley, dated January 14th 1957 from the Park N Sleep Motel in Tampa Florida and postmarked from Tampa. Buddy writes "Dear Mother and Dad, just wanted to let you know we are doing alright. We are on our way to Savannah now, Love Buddy" Research shows Buddy performed on the Hank Thompson Tour concert in Tampa Florida on January 13th 1957 and on January 15th in Savannah GA. Two pages of handwritten lyrics in Buddy’s hand of an unpublished song. The Lyrics are very poignant-the last verse reads “Don’t cry-just forget about me, Don’t sigh-it wasn’t meant to be, Soon I will be a memory". One can also see where on two verses Buddy had originally used the word “company” later crossing it out and inserting the word “sympathy”. Both the Postcard and lyrics utilise a frame within a frame, hinged so both sides are visible. This 4 sided letter handwritten by Beatrix Potter from her home in Sawrey is dated September 13th 1917 and is addressed to her niece Esther (Nicholson). Beatrix comments how well she has done in her exams and advises "Don’t spoil your eyes and health with too much reading". She also comments "I have bought a cow to distract my thoughts, it kicks most frightfully, your Uncle devotes part of his leisure to watching the struggles, at a discreet distance". This lovely and personal letter describes some of her private life- it is signed Beatrix Heelis (her married surname). Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) Beatrix Potter was an English writer and illustrator best known for her children’s books such as the Tale of Peter Rabbit. She wrote thirty books including 23 Children’s tales. She purchased Hill Top Farm near Sawrey in 1905 and later bought surrounding farms and lands in order to preserve the country landscape. In 1913 she married William Heelis, a solicitor. Upon her death she left almost all her property to The National Trust. Her books continue to be sold throughout the world.
