Le Petit Musée => Bastogne trip : Dernier lieu pour cette journée mémoire, lieu faisant partie du package du Bastogne War Museum. Le Bastogne War Room. Également un super site bien mis en scène, encore un lieu à aller voir. Un peu d'histoire : 22 décembre 1944, le général américain McAuliffe refuse de se rendre aux Allemands qui assiègent Bastogne Dans un premier temps, le général McAuliffe croit que les Allemands annoncent qu’ils se rendent. Mais les officiers lui répondent qu’il se trompe : "Ce sont eux qui veulent que nous nous rendions". Il s’exclame alors : "Oh nuts !", ce qui en argot américain pourrait être traduit par "Ils doivent être fous". Les officiers se concertent alors sur quelle réponse il faut apporter à cet ultimatum. Il est décidé de répondre aux Allemands par écrit. "Et qu’est-ce que je devrais écrire ?", demande McAuliffe. "Un jeune homme impétueux dit à Mc Aulife qu’il n’y a pas de meilleure réponse que la réaction que vous avez eue lorsque nous vous avons fait part de la teneur de l’ultimatum", se souvient Harry Kinnard. "Qu’est-ce que vous voulez dire ?", dit Mc Auliffe. "Vous avez dit 'nuts !'." Et tous les officiers présents approuvent. Il prend donc pris une feuille de papier et y écrit : "À l’attention du commandant allemand : Nuts ! Signé : le commandant américain, général Anthony McAuliffe". Le colonel Harper porte le message aux émissaires allemands. Ces derniers ne comprennent pas immédiatement : "La réponse est-elle affirmative ou négative", demandent-ils. Le colonel Harper leur dit : "C’est incontestablement négatif. Cela signifie : 'Allez en enfer'. Nous tueront chaque Allemand qui tentera d’entrer dans cette ville". A Churchill AVRE on display in the Bovington Tank Museum. An offshoot of the Churchill tank line of the British army. It took the basic chassis and hull and made it an engineering platform to help in obstacle and fortified position clearing. The main gun was replaced with a large calibre demolition spigot mortar, its ammunition often was referred to as the "flying dustbin". Loaded with History This hand cart was salvaged from the Building Research Establishment and is stamped BRS for the Building Research Station and DSIR (for department of scientific and industrial research). This group was established in the first world war and during the second world war members including William Glanville were involved in developing and building scale models for the bouncing bombs used in the dambusting raids. #OTD in 1941,Leamington Spa. The Prime Minister watching Czech troops training with a 2-pounder anti-tank gun. The F C A arrived in Leamington in 1940 following the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Nazis. The four-thousand military personnel were based in and around the town for two years. Their headquarters were in Harrington House, now demolished, a large Victorian villa a few yards from the park gates in Newbold Terrace. While based in mid-Warwickshire, a small number of specially selected Czechoslovak Warrant Officers were sent to Arisaig in Western Scotland to be trained as paratroop agents by the British Special Operations Execuive (SOE). After a very rigorous training course, they formed a select group of men who were on standby to be parachuted into occupied Czechoslovakia to carry out sabotage missions and to support the Czechoslovak Underground movement. 27 APRIL 1943 – BATTLE OF HILL 609 BEGINS #WWII As Allied troops began the final drive towards the critical Tunisian cities of Tunis and Bizerte in late April 1943, the U.S. Army’s 34th Infantry Division was tasked with seizing Hill 609, a formidably defended piece of high ground at the core of the German line. On 23 April 1943, Major General Omar N. Bradley’s U.S. II Corps, composed of the 1st, 9th, and 34th Infantry Divisions and the 1st Armored Division, began advancing eastward toward Bizerte. Progress came in yards, not miles, despite superior American artillery support, and some units like the 2d Battalion, 18th Infantry, in the 1st Division area had to retake the same hill three times. As the 9th Infantry Division along the coast and the 1st Infantry Division to the south advanced slowly against determined enemy resistance, the 34th Infantry Division entered the line between them and launched an assault against the center of the German defensive line, a cluster of ridges dominated by the promontory of Hill 609, on the night of 26 – 27 April. American troops steadily ground away the enemy defenses on several secondary ridges which guarded the approaches to Hill 609. American artillery fire, strong and incessant, pounded the area on 28 April. At 0500 on 29 April the 34th Infantry Division’s 135th Infantry Regiment began assaulting Hill 609. The 135th’s 3rd Battalion was meant to execute a holding action at the base of Hill 609, while the 1st and 2nd Battalions seized adjacent secondary peaks in a pincer movement. However, the intended envelopment of Hill 609 quickly bogged down, and the 3rd Battalion was essentially stuck in an unsupported frontal attack on a formidable hill fortress. Despite its adversarial circumstances, the 3rd Battalion fought its way a half-mile up the slope by dusk. When the advance resumed at 0500 on 30 April, the 3rd Battalion was reinforced and pushed to the summit of Hill 609. "Use Spades not Ships. Grow your own food And Supply Your Own Cookhouse" - British WW2 poster designed by Abram Games and issued by the War Office. The poster urges citizens to grow their own food rather than having it imported by ships. Before WW2, the UK was importing over 55 million tons of food each year. However, after the outbreak of war the UK needed to import even more for the war effort while at the same time having its merchant shipping attacked by German U-Boats. As such, the 'Dig for Victory' campaign was launched where citizens were encouraged to start gardens and cultivate their own food. Millions of leaflets were issued, and by 1943 over 1.4 million people in the UK had allotments that were producing over 1 million tons of vegetables each year. A similar initiative called "Victory Gardens" was present in the United States. Teil 2 unserer Italien Tour🇮🇹 Die Abtei Monte Cassino. Über 5 Monate tobten hier 1944 mehrere schwere Schlachten. Deutsche Truppen konnten Anfang 1944, Kunstgüter mir einem unschätzbaren Wert für die Menschheit, von Abtei zum Vatikan evakuieren. Später zerstörten US Bomber aufgrund einer absichtlichen Britischen Lüge die gesamte Abtei obwohl diese von den deutschen Truppen ausdrücklich als neutrale Zone deklariert wurde, und sich keine deutscher Soldaten dort befand. Dabei kamen hunderte Italiener (Zivilisten) die dort Schutz suchten, ums Leben. Die Abtei war komplett zerstört nach der Bombardierung. US engineers turned the island of Tinian into an unsinkable aircraft carrier, with a total of six 8,500 ft runways from which could be launched the B-29 Superfortress. Costing more than the Manhattan Project, the effort to build these giant bombers created an aircraft that could achieve a maximum combat load on takeoff of 135,000 lbs - an incredible 61 tonnes. #ww2 #ww2history #b29 #B29
Heinz Heuer During the Battle of Berlin, Heinz Heuer was placed in command of a small Battlegroup consisting of 28 men, and in this capacity, he received a special mission from General Krebs. Heuer and his men were to take out a suspected Soviet command post on 21st April 1945. Moving out from Berlin, Heuer identified a Soviet tank unit with about 40-50 tanks assembling. A supply unit and individual vehicles were spotted constantly moving between the tank units. Heuer determined that Soviet command post was likely to be in this area. At 01:30, he and a few of his men overpowered the Soviet guards and captured the command post after a short firefight, capturing all the maps and documents located. By now, other units of his Battlegroup had moved to engage the Soviet tanks, and now Heuer himself likewise entered the fray. The Battlegroup claimed to have destroyed 27 tanks on this night, of which Heuer personally was credited with knocking out 13 with Panzerfausts. He was awarded Knight Cross for this action. The awarding is not supported by proof in Bundesarchiv. However, Heinz Heuer was accepted into the Order of Knights Cross Recipients. [Ordensgemeinschaft der Ritterkreuzträger]. Kapitänleutnant Günther Prien (1908-1941) war nach Beginn des Krieges 1939 der erste deutsche Soldat, den die NS-Propaganda zu einem reichsweit bekannten Kriegshelden stilisierte. Mitte Oktober 1939 war er mit U 47 in den als uneinnehmbar geltenden britischen Kriegshafen Scapa Flow eingedrungen und hatte das Schlachtschiff Royal Oak versenkt. Von Adolf Hitler persönlich wurde ihm anschließend das Ritterkreuz verliehen. Wie von Prien wurden von vielen Ritterkreuzträgern propagandistische Sammelpostkarten hergestellt. USAAF Sudbury - Station 174: 486th Bomb Group. On the South Eastern side of the airfield lie the remains of a cluster of rare surviving hardstands. Other than being overgrown they are intact and retain all original features including anchor rings used to secure aircraft during rough weather. A wartime image shows the hardstands with two aircraft dispersed on them. At Zero West we design everything in-house, It all starts with an idea, a moment in time, but the process from concept to reality is a long one. Take the Bullhead landspeed chronograph series, this was over 2 years in the making, from initial sketches to drawings then onto 3D renders in our CAD system. We then went on to 3D print the watch body out of plastic, print out a dial and mock the watch up in the real world. Following visual refinements we then machined some sample watch bodies and built several prototypes to check we are 100% happy with everything before manufacturing the main run. Today we celebrate National Veteran's Day in Finland. National Veterans’ Day is observed in Finland each year on 27 April, the day the Lapland War ended in 1945. There are still almost 2,000 living war veterans in Finland and the average age of the remaining veterans is 99. Unfortunately the type’s use in UK service had a rather abrupt end at the conclusion of WWII, in contrast to US employment of the Corsair, which was prominent in the Korean War. The type’s production run was the longest of any US piston engined fighter. Colour on a dull day! Sunnyside Campsite is situated on a high point in Westhall - flanked by small valleys. ‘Westhall’ (west-halla) means ‘West valley’. If you look southward, you can see five wind turbines situated across on the other side of the valley on the old WW2 airfield site at Holton. According to statements by veterans of the 116th PD and residents the tank fell over due to detonation pressure by dropped bombs into the Ourthe river, or the bridge collapsed and the panther landed on the turret. The crew died because of the impact or drowned. This Panther was recovered out of the river Ourthe by French engineers on 20th September 1947, the remains of the crew killed in the attack were discovered when the Panther was pulled from the river. The Panther was pulled from the riverbank in the 1950's and placed in the town. In the 1960's it was placed as a monument on the Rue de Bastogne. It was repainted a few times and replaced on a new spot a few meters from the parkinglot. A few years ago it was send to the Bastogne Barracks to be restored for static display as a monument. Walkaround video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAal8esx_R4 The M4 Sherman, officially Medium Tank, M4, was the most widely used medium tank by the United States and Western Allies in WWII. The M4 Sherman proved to be reliable, relatively cheap to produce, and available in great numbers. It was also the basis of several other armored fighting vehicles including self-propelled artillery, tank destroyers, and armored recovery vehicles. The M4(75) Sherman would have had a cast nose, turret and a welded hull, with a 75mm cannon. It would have had applique armour welded in front of the crew positions and additional armour welded to the sides. M4 was fitted a Continental R975-C1 or -C4 9 cylinder radial gasoline engine. The M4 would see service with other countries like Britain, France and Poland. Production would stop in 1944 after 6748 were produced. This Sherman with serial number 30270, RN 3038800, was manufactured by Pullman standard in May, 1943. It was abandoned on December 19, 1944, after it ran into a dung pit, and got stuck. It was removed and placed on the Place Des Martyrs. During the start of the Battle of the Bulge this Command Sherman, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel R. W. Ripple, had to retreat from it's position at Erpeldange, and moved to Wiltz. Arriving at Wiltz, the Sherman came under fire and Ripples driver reversed the Sherman into a house,that collapsed instantly, the tank was now stuck under a lot of rubble,the Sherman made it's way out but ran into a dung pit, were it got stuck again. The crew abandoned the Sherman, but were captured, and send to a POW camp, for the remainder of the war. Lieutenant Colonel Richard W. Ripple, returned to the town of Wiltz in 1994, and was pleasantly surprised, that his tank had become a monument to the Battle. Richard W.
