Creative writing can be a minefield for children, especially when they have such wonderful ideas but writing them down and expressing them clearly is a barrier. This week the fantastic Raffi has shown me his insightful interpretation of the characters from ‘George’s marvellous medicine’ by creating puppets ready to produce his own representation of the book. This form of exploration supports children develop a capacity to explain their understanding of books and other reading, and to prepare their ideas before they write. While I was very fond of Grandma as she looks particularly haggard with a very ugly wart, the crazy growing chicken is absolutely my favourite. Das sorgt in seiner neuen Gemeinde für Verwirrung - und Erheiterung. Diese Kurzgeschichte schrieb Roald Dahl für eine Dyslexie-Organisation. Der deutsche Übersetzer (nicht Rowohlt) entschied sich, die Wörter nicht zu übertragen, sondern die Witze zu erklären, was den Text etwas sperrig macht. Na obrovské broskvi jsme se vznesli do světa příběhů Roalda Dahla, přeletěli jsme nad Drtičovou základní školou a s pusou od čokolády jsme přistáli přímo v továrně na čokoládu. Naši malí Umpa-Lumpové se s nadšením pustili do výroby vlastní čokolády a kouzelné prohlídky celé @chocotopiacz, která vám ukáže kde se berou čokoládové boby, jak se čokoláda vyrábí, jak chutná, jak voní, ale taky se projdete fantazijními světy, které si naše děti užily. Rosie and Roald’s Book Club! . . I started this a while ago and meant to do it once per week but the thought of reading this book again was enough to put me off for two whole months. Please accept photos of a sleeping Milo as penance. . . Not only is the book poorly structured and lacking in cohesive characterisation, the racism is blatant. The book appears to me to be a thinly veiled tirade against the politics and President of the USA — this isn’t unique to the book, as in one story ‘B*tch’, Dahl’s character plans to drug the President into comitting r*pe live on air. Yes, you read that correctly. . . Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is a book in two halves: the story takes place immediately after Charlie and the Chocolate Factory finishes off, with the elevator in the Bucket’s house. They fly into space and enter the just-launched space hotel, are mistaken by the President for violent aliens, then discover actual violent alients already in the space hotel (the Vermicious Knids) who then try to destroy the elevator and its occupants. After evading the Vermicious Knids (who look like literal gobs on poo, it’s truly bizarre) the elevator returns to earth and the second part begins... . . When Charlie’s grandparents refuse to get out of bed, Wonka reveals an de-aging pill which removes 20 years from your age. The grandparents take too much and Grandma Georgina enters ‘Minus-Land’, because she aged herself to -2 years old. They re-age her too much so she’s 350, and de-age her again. They all end up the same age they were at the start. It is really as boring as it sounds. . . There is very little chocolate or candy mentioned at ALL in this book, and Dahl unfortunately has a habit of going too far into scientific explanations of impossible things in order to make them seem more believable; this is true for his adult fiction mostly, but it’s laborious in Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator as we have multiple explanations of space travel, aliens, gravity, de-/re-aging pills....the book is truly just bad. 0/10 do not recommend. No whimsy at all!!!

My book haul from Independent Bookstore day on 4/27. We had such a great day! We started at Napa Bookmine, had sushi for lunch, and ended the day at Copperfield’s Petaluma. I picked up most of the Independent Bookstore Day merch - tote, coffee mug, and the IBD exclusive edition of A Stroke of the Pen by Terry Pratchett. I picked up a mix of new and used books - An Absolutely Remarkable Thing and A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor, both by Hank Green. I watched a ton of Crash Course to get through the prerequisites for nursing school so we are huge Hank Green fans at our house. I think my teenager and I will both enjoy these. My tween picked out a Spy Camp graphic novel, both my kids are big Stuart Gibbs fans. I grabbed Roald Dahl’s Book of Ghost Stories, I thought it would be fun to read aloud this fall. For myself, I got We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson and The Will of the Many by James Islington. His name is Roald Dahl a popular British Author of Children’s literature, he did Short stories, was a Poet & Screenwriter. His books sold more than 300 million copies worldwide. Born in Wales to Norwegian Parents in Sept. 1916 he suffered loss early in life losing his older Sister to appendicitis age 7 & his Father a few weeks later to pneumonia he was just 3 yrs old when this happened. When he was 6 yrs old he met his idol Beatrix Potter famous writer of Peter Rabbit that made a huge impact on him & planted the seed. He ended up serving in the Royal Air Force as a Fighter Pilot in the Second World War. When the War was over he got serious about writing, Married Actress Patricia O’Neal having 5 Children with her. He loved Story telling using his imagination of characters & new inventive words using his own children as a sounding board in their reactions he wrote them down & had them made into Books! Like James & the Peach, Charlie & the Choc. Factory, Matilda, Fantastic Mr Fox & The BFC just to name a few. Many were made into Films as well as a Screenwriter for TV he wrote for the show Way Out that preceded Twilight Zone & Alfred Hitchcock Presents Show. Even with all the success came more pain in 1960 his Son Theo was severely injured when his carriage was hit by a Taxi Cab in NYC. A shunt device had to be installed to save him with a lot of rehab. In 1962 his Eldest Daughter Olivia died of Measles age 7yrs which put him in a deep depression. He advocated for Measle vaccines that could of saved her if given earlier. Then in 1965 Patricia had a major Stroke that she barely survived learning to walk & talk again Roald was by her side to a full recovery. Despite it all he manage to keep his Humor & Creative Writing going til Nov. 1990 dying from Blood Cancer age 74. Children to this day put Toys & Flowers on his Grave for to them he gave them Magic of Escape in a World of Pure Imagination for them & for us to never lose. Und die Schule, die sie für die Kleine aussuchen gleicht einem Gefängnis: die gemeine Direktorin Knüppelkuh führt ein wahres Schreckensregiment. Nach einem Buch vom „Anti-Kinder-Freund“ Roald Dahl (Hexen Hexen, Charlie und die Schokoladenfabrik) inszenierte Danny DeVito, der hier auch den unsympathischen Vater spielt, die 1996 erschienene Komödie. Der Film ist von Beginn an eine tolle Reise eines Mädchens, das nicht beachtet wird, sich selbst alles lernen muss und so gar nicht zu ihrer Familie passt. Auch in der Schule gibt’s die herrische Direktorin, die schon mal Kinder aus dem Fenster wirft, sie in die „Luftweg“-Kammer sperrt oder die Schule am liebsten ohne Kinder hätte. Mit ihr, einer ehemaligen Kugelstosserin gibts definitiv die witzigsten Szenen. Überhaupt ist der Film, obwohl alles sehr traurig klingt, sehr unterhaltsam geraten… für jung UND alt.
