Set within the highlands of the mountainous Bedugul Regency in Bali, atop a plateau that sits on Lake Beratan, stands the majestic Ulun Danu Temple. In the soft, mountain weather, approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, the air is crisp and cool. The stunningly clear lake is calm and almost perfectly still. A thin mist rises from the lake and hangs in the air, surrounding the temple, giving it a somewhat surreal appearance. Pura Ulun Danu was built in adoration of the Goddess Danu. Danu, in the Balinese tongue, means lake, while the goddess Danu is goddess of water, lakes and rivers. The temple complex consists of four sacred buildings. Linga Pura stands three levels high, and is a place of worship to the god Shiva. Pura Puncak Mangu stands 11 levels high, and was built in dedication to the god Vishnu. The mountain in which the temple sits on is known as the holy mountain. The lake was once the biggest in Bali until it was split into 3, Beratan, Buyan and Tamblingan. Beratan comes from the word Brata which means to conduct ones self to fill the 9 primary needs in life. “ Tapa Brata” is to meditate and be united with nature. Lake Beratan became the realm of the Goddess. Although the grounds are open to the public the temple itself is closed and only used for ceremonies for the Balinese people. Life happens most serendipitous way as all of life does when you are in flow. We came dressed for ceremony no knowing that the temple was closed to the public, but luck had other plans as we were invited to sit with the priest and receive and private invocation while at the temple of the lake. The journey of the Goddess is not one that came be made up, but lived through pure embodiment. The picturesque Pura Tirta Empul dates from 926 AD and it’s dedicated to Vishnu, the Hindu god of water. Truckloads of believers visit the temple (pura in Bahasa Indonesia) en masse, along with non-believers fascinated by the Melukat ritual. The name was derived from the Sanskrit word for congratulations and is also the name of the mythological dragon that is believed to inhabit Mount Mandara. 🛕The temple complex is actually comprised of 24 temples and lies in the shadow of Mount Agung. In 1963, Mount Agung erupted, causing catastrophic damage to the area. As earthquakes and lava flow set the surrounding villages on fire and left them in rubble, the temple complex dating back to 900 A.D. was left completely unscathed. 📍Located about a 30-minute drive from Sideman and 1.5 hours from Ubud. It is most conveniently reached by motorbike. There is a massive parking area next to the ticket office. While the sign said parking was a reasonable 5000 IDR, no one was there to charge us. 👉Entry is 60,000 IDR per person and includes a sarong, a one-way ride to the base of the temple complex, and a guide. Guides are optional, but if you choose to use their services, then a tip is recommended. We prefer to do our own research, so we opted to explore the grounds on our own. 🚨Beware of local vendors attempting to convince you that you must have an offering to enter the grounds. The only required payment is the entry ticket itself. Other things to be aware of are: 🅰 The weather, if the perfect picture is what you're hunting, then make sure the forecast is clear of rain and clouds. If you want to beat the crowds, then come when the forecast is calling for rain. 🅱 The time of day matters. The grounds are only open to tourists from 8am to 5pm, and it gets extremely crowded during the middle of the day. Early in the morning and later in the day, the crowds thin out. 🅲 Dress modestly. The temple is an active place of worship, and you will be expected to keep your shoulders and knees covered. 🅳 The Temples are not open to the public. You can explore the grounds and view the extraordinary architecture from the outside, but it is forbidden for anyone to enter who isn't a practicing Hindu.
