Hey everyone!! So I’ve been working on a couple things I’m really excited to share and wanted to introduce them with this post. Firstly, my love of photography has only grown and is something I am starting to do professionally. I have created a separate page, @picsbykiram to showcase all of my other photography work going forward outside of my travel photography/ content (that will remain on my main profile). I am seeking to expand my portfolio with a wide variety of shots! Portraits, products, photo work for your business, headshots, truly anything I’d love to work on. If you or someone you know would like some camera work done, please don’t hesitate to reach out and we can get to work📸😊 Secondly, I have been working on a website to house a work portfolio in addition to a travel blog. As far as my work, you can go to my website and see a broader view of my portfolio as it grows and a contact/work with me page to reach out there. Otherwise, just DM me🙃 The other purpose of my website is for my travel blog. I love writing and traveling, and wanted to create a space where I can share how I go about planning out my trips. I’ve been getting more and more questions about how I plan my travels, and it’s a space I’ve wanted to create for a while so I am officially launching my blog! I’m going to be writing in depth reviews and guides, so if you’re looking to start planning your own adventurous trips, the link to the blog can be found in my bio🙃 #milwaukeephotographer #photographer #photography #chicagophotographer #portraitphotography #travelblogger #travelwriting #copywriters #travelphotography #blogger #travelblog #travelbloggers #filmakers #videography #travelvideography #travelvideographer #travelphotographer

A new (to me) book arrived in the mail today and I can’t wait to dive in! As part of my preparation for a trip I love to research about my destination’s history, culture, food etc. by reading, listening to podcasts and watching movies and tv shows. I’m slowly building a “library” of recommendations on my website, so check it out in time for your next adventure. https://www.gotravelwithangelaclark.com/europe.html #gotravel #womengotravel #travelresearch #travelwriting

I’m working on poems, but haven’t had anything to post. I leave for Romania in a WEEK, so expect lots of pictures next week! For now, just know that I’m working on writing and schoolwork and getting by. I can’t express how grateful I am for the universe and the life I am living. If you’ve read this far, I hope you have an awesome first week of May! We’re delighted to note that David Pilling made the UK Press Awards’s Travel Journalist of the Year shortlist in part for his @financialtimes piece(s) on his adventures through the rainforests of the Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic, which was designed by our exploration specialists and hosted by Will Jones. Described by the judges as ‘well written, feature-length text pieces that illustrate Pilling’s sensitive and evocative style, often laced with wry humour’, and which tell stories ‘from the inside out and not the stories that outsiders would seek to impose’, he also submitted part of a podcast that ‘probed some of the themes that often get marginalised in conventional travel pieces.’ It’s clear that they are blown away not only by talk of ‘controversies around conservation’, but also by the opportunity to peer with their ears into ‘a little understood environment’, including the world of the Ba’Aka net hunters and that of the movement of forest elephant. Bravo, David. It is an absolute joy to facilitate trips that bring about powerful stories told with such care. Link in our bio to the story. And then there is a little oasis in the middle of somewhere... Other parts of the world are known for their oases and sand dunes, with the largest oasis in the world located in the Tafilalet region of Morocco!, for those following the largest and the biggest lists, we all know a few of those travelers. However, for most travelers, it doesn't really matter, especially if you are geographically closer and having fun sand boarding in the dunes of Huacachina in Peru 🏄🏼‍♀️ So why Peru, and not some other countries? With many places already visited across the world, I asked quite a few travelers and locals about what they wanted to hear about the most and what photo-stories from my travel photography and storytelling project they really liked. So, by popular demand and by the tally of voting, here is a brief recap. Since Peru and Latin America, USA and Canada are really far far away, I haven't met that many travelers and locals who have been to that part of the world just yet, and only some have heard about these places. Festive mood of old Quebec, artistic Florence, as well as US National parks and Mediterranean feels of Catalina Island, were asked about the most by far ✌️ #Huacachina #Peru #nature #oasis #visitPeru #funtrip #travel #photography #storytelling #writing #travelblog #travelwishlist #travelnotes #travelwriting

It was our free day and after two days of rain and cloudy weather, it was finally shiny. Perfect for walking though the old houses aesthetic doors, colorful cafes, historical buildings and structures, and cobbled streets filled with tourists from all around the world. It felt like we were in some really happening place. While there was so much to see, we only had a day for free roaming and we absorbed as much as we could. #travelphotography #travelwriting #mobilephotography #goantalya #goturkey #antalyaonfoot #antalya #kaleiçi #history

With heavy thunderstorms predicted to pockmark a sweltering, some might say muggy Sunday in the industrial beating heart of central England, I chanced my arm at a late morning stroll into my spiritual hometown of Ironbridge as the rowing regatta was in full weekend swing and I’ll never tire of the walk beside the River Severn as she gently flows with the river of life from Coalbrookdale, and the site of the regatta, to nearby Ironbridge. The rowing club, local park and all available viewing sites at the start of the regatta were teeming with the very essence of excitable life and as busy as I’ve ever seen it, even matching the yearly festival to celebrate Ironbridge’s status as a World Heritage accredited site. Being too busy and merely the starting line for a parade of races heading away from Ironbridge in the direction of Shrewsbury, it became of little interest to a mere interloper seeking “action shots” of the boats on the river and besides, the storm clouds were gathering fast and I decided to go and say hello to a lion on a bridge instead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dN9TkzVDuQ&list=PLlDLPtJeu2LXSAV17QF8FS-Ju1YFfic0q&index=18 https://open.substack.com/pub/ramblingmusings666/p/a-lion-on-a-bridge-and-sunday-night?r=2u7w8q&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true https://medium.com/@stephenblackford561/a-lion-on-a-bridge-and-sunday-night-baseball-b17b4e18953a #ironbridge #ironbridgegorge #summer #summertime #stories #shortstory #writing #travel #travelwriting #travelphotography #history #heritage #baseball #dodgers #ladodgers #letsgododgers

"During the brief changeover between innings I mused on the hours of cricket I’d already watched so far today (I was approaching my ninth hour with still another hour and a half to go at least) and thoughts turned, as they always do when watching cricket, to my dear old Mum and the “pyjama cricket” she’d call the one-day version, memories of first seeing this colourful alternative in the early 1980’s but, more memorably, on England’s 1987 Ashes triumph “down under” in Australia as well as the controversy laden 1992 World Cup when I first purchased an official, bona-fide light blue England one-day international jersey. My Dad’s favourite player Imran Khan broke my heart in the Final as he led his Pakistan team to World Cup glory, but three decades on the ladies game has continued to change radically beyond recognition with an almost full house in Birmingham loudly cheering on the now darker blue and red of England against the pleasingly green and gold of Australia". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9k9ixhxoB8&list=PLlDLPtJeu2LXSAV17QF8FS-Ju1YFfic0q&index=16&t=1s https://open.substack.com/pub/ramblingmusings666/p/pyjama-cricket-through-a-black-mirror?r=2u7w8q&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true https://medium.com/@stephenblackford561/pyjama-cricket-through-a-black-mirror-1f93c8c2e63b #blackmirror #cricket #cricketlovers #cricketbook #books #booksbooksbooks #bookstagrammer #wheatonaston #travel #travelwriting #travelphotography #englandcricket #cricketaustralia

ABOUT ME!👋🏻   Hey, I’m Matt, a travel writer and photographer, born and raised in Yorkshire in the north of England!✍🏻   In the spring of 2018, I took the leap of my first solo trip using my tight university budget to head down under for a fortnight. It was nowhere near long enough, but that didn’t stop it being life changing…I knew I never wanted to stop✈️   When COVID hit in 2020 and I was forced to step away from travelling, I turned my hand instead to writing about it. I took up an MA course in Travel & Nature Writing and have never looked back! And in the 4 years since choosing this route through life I’ve seen my travels published in national news, magazines and even started my own business showcasing natural world photography!📸   So here’s 5 little things about me👇🏻   🙋🏼‍♂️As I post this, I’m 24 years old (’99) 🗺️I’ve been lucky enough to visit 25 countries (with 4 more planned for this year!) 🐾I have a background in wildlife conservation so I love looking for nature everywhere I go 🇻🇳My craziest experience is spending most of 2023 teaching English in central Vietnam 🗞️My dream is to be published in National Geographic   I’m no full-time traveller (YET!) or digital nomad, I work part-time and travel and write every moment I can all in aid of one goal: I want to share my experiences with the world and inspire others to travel the way I have been!   That’s what this page is for, I’ll be making Mini-Guides to great destinations and spotlighting all parts of the world to show you what’s really out there!   Thanks for coming along for the journey!   PHOTOS 🇻🇳A scenic spot in northern Vietnam 🇹🇷Wandering the back streets of Istanbul 🇿🇦The end of a long hike up Table Mountain 🏝️Jumping (falling) into Ha Long Bay 🏍️Exploring Cat Ba Island by bike #travel #travelphotography #miniguides #instatravel #travelling #globaltravel #travelwriting #travelwriter #travelwriters #travelinspiration #travelinspo #travelguide #mwalshtravels

April 30, 2018: The first sign of snow 🏔️ As you trek along the circuit, the scenery changes gradually and often you don’t realize it happening, until something stark like snow appears. Much like the way our bodies, our character, or our mindsets change, the small and gradual shifts within us happen bit by bit. One day, when looking in the mirror, or noticing our reaction to the world and people around us, we suddenly realize that we are a different version of ourselves. Today’s 🗓️: Sweden stays back (after riverside meditation swipe for video) easy walk to Upper Pisang cold AF up here (at this point I am wearing every article of clothing I have in my backpack to sleep at night) England’s shower face (if you want to hear about this... you’ll have to wait for my memoir) Drop me a 🏔️ in the comments if you’re enjoying the journey through the Annapurna Circuit with me. #travelwriter #travelwriting #trekkingnepal #annapurnacircuit #travelstory

Eastern Borneo, July – August 1977. There’s been a bit of conversation in the comments recently about rattan working so I thought this would be a good time to show a few pics of that. Rattan is a climbing plant covered in vicious little thorns that grows wild in the forest. It’s harvested by the men, cut into lengths and brought back to the longhouse where the women take over, drying, peeling, slicing thin strips from the outside of the strands (you need a very steady hand for this), dying the strips (the traditional colours - apart from the natural colour of the rattan - were black, red and yellow) and finally weaving them into mats, baskets and the like. As you can see from the photographs, most of this took place on the ground in front of the longhouse. The mats made by these Punan people were famous for their quality and much sought after. They were measured in handspans and when you traded for them you bargained so much tobacco or salt per handspan. There was always great hilarity when I joke insisted that we should use my hands to measure the mats – my hands were about twice the size of those of the Punan ladies. The last picture shows a mat I traded for in this longhouse. It’s almost fifty years old – hence that beautiful golden colour. You can just about make out the red bands even though they have faded with age. (My book about this journey - ‘Words from a Wild Place. A Borneo Journal’ - is available on Amazon as both paperback and ebook. You can read reviews there too.) #borneo #eastborneo #eastkalimantan #exploreborneo #1970s #solotravelstories #travelwriters #travelwriting #travelbooks #travelmemoirs #memoirs #retrophotography #canonftql #kodachrome #dayak #dayakborneo #dayakkalimantan #dayakpunan #outdooradventure #outdoorsy #offthebeatenpath #offthebeatentrack #visualanthropology #rainforest

The last time we anchored in Spelve, it was to shelter from a storm with a jury-rigged anchor windlass. This week however, the windlass was fixed and a high pressure pressed down on the surface of the loch, killing the wind and flattening the sea. In the morning I jumped into the tender and rowed away from Stravaigin whilst the guests dropped themselves off the stern to wild swim in the loch and then drink hot coffee on deck with our skipper, John. The environment, encompassing mountains and lochs was mirror calm. It was like looking into the eyes of a person who has mastered intrinsic stillness. I sat there, listening to the sound of songbirds, Canada Geese and Cuckoos. Sinking into the moment. From behind me I heard something exhaled loudly through its nostrils, there was a disturbance in the dark, glassy water and seconds later a seal poked his head through the surface. He made amazing company for the next 30 minutes; curious, quiet and unusual, huge black eyes reflecting the mountains around him. Circling my tender, inching closer, getting excited when I reached lower to the loch and exhaling salty water through his nostrils. The day moved on, we hauled anchor and set off across to the West side of the Loch to grab a bag of fresh, rope grown muscles from @inverlussamussels for lunch, passing Provident on our way, a 100 year old gaff ketch Brixham Trawler. Let me take you on a little journey. One I haven’t documented very well as I’ve been caught up in the needs of my family. It’s a journey deep into a very special little bookish street, deep in the heart of London. I’d not heard of it before, despite living in the capital twice. And it’s not too far from Covent Garden, somewhere I could always be relied on to spend my time when I was in residence. Cecil Court is the name and it is a book lovers delight. Who wouldn’t love a lazy hour or three down a cosy little street full of independent #booksellers? With full on Victorian vibes and antiquarian chic. Watkins Books is definitely my favourite- it’s an esoteric heaven. I definitely need to go back for a longer browse and bring my bookish pals with me.. And bringing it back to the now: #bookishjourneys. Ones where your mind takes you somewhere else. This time with beautiful, beautiful #JohnSteinbeck and his #TravelsWithCharley. A 58 year old man, full of empathy, insight and an eye for a story. Seeing beauty and wonder in everything. If a many could weave stories and adventures like this to tempt me away on I would flow anywhere they asked. I would enjoy everything. Every sunrise. Every twinkling starred night. Every mishap and discovery. My soul would feel fully alive. Maybe I just need to buy myself a hound and a camper van and just make like Johnny S. Seize the world. See a thing or three. Seriously though. This book. Oh my soul is aching. Wanderlust. Not being contained. Seeing things. That man was Nostradamus. He saw the world reflected at him and where it was going wrong. The dawn of modernity. Blaming the enemy- making them the scapegoat of all ills and misfortune. The unfairness of racial inequality. The evils of plastics and disposable living. Mostly though, I lost myself in his words. He is a master wordsmith. He crafts pages you can swim in. #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookworm #magicalreads #travel #travelwriting #literature #recommendedreads

The only catch? I just need to make sure you’re a good fit. This program is for you if: ✅ You’re just starting out on your travel writing journey ✅ You have a passion for telling impactful stories ✅ You can commit a minimum of 3 hours per week for 1 month  ✅ You’re willing to give detailed feedback on the course *As this opportunity is totally free, priority will be given to those coming from an underrepresented demographic within the travel media space (e.g. women, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+, people of colour etc.) Sound like you? Drop “travel writer” in the comments and I’ll send you the application form via DM.  🌟 Why Should You Be Excited? 🌟  I’ve spent the last five years travelling the world writing award-winning stories for publications like National Geographic, the BBC, Vogue, Conde Nast, Travel + Leisure and many more.  But I started from zero – no writing portfolio; no journalism degree; no editor contacts. That’s why I know what it’s like to come at this from nothing, and I know what it takes to get to where you want to be.   In this course, you’ll get: 🔥 Exclusive Access: Get early access to my course before it goes public 🤝 One-on-One Guidance: Work directly with me, leveraging my experience as a multi-award-winning travel journalist  📚 Valuable resources: 24 video lessons, workbooks & templates that give you *everything* you need to get published, from finding story ideas to pitching to editors HURRY, applications close on Tuesday, May 7 (NEXT WEEK!) and I’m only taking on TWO talented writers. #travelwriting #travelwriter

It has felt like luck in health hasn't been on my side this past decade with 2 back to traumatic brain injuries and TSW. But what has felt like luck on my side is returning back to my love: travel writing, but more so, getting to experience some truly wonderous things lately that I feel profoundly grateful for. Such as hiking Angels Landing, which is known as one of the most dangerous hikes in the United States. I'm finally getting to explore some of the stunning national parks of Utah, something I've dreamed of doing since my first boyfriend in my 20s introduced me to hiking. As a sat in my lovely glamping tent last night, I felt emotional, which has been quite common for me post TBI. But this time it was bittersweet tears of joy. Yes, I hiked Angels Landing but not to the full summit, which is over a thousand feet off the valley floor and has no guard rails. People have hurt themselves, and even fallen to their deaths, and the last portion of the trek felt too precarious for me. Pre brain injury me saw me soaring through hills on a mountain bike, rapelling off cliffs while canyoneering and more. I felt proud to be one of the few female extreme adventure travel writers. And definitely one of the few people of colour in the industry. But I now I add a new adjective: invisible disability. At first I felt shameful for not being able to conquer the summit since former me would have gleefully. But what I did do was conquer one of the most dangerous hikes up until Scouts Lookout, which also had beautiful views. But more importantly, I got back on the hills so to speak and am slowly working my way back to conquering my fears and now acknowledging that while I may not summit every mountain like before, I'm climbing the hills with what I now have: an extremely elevated heart rate post TBI, chronic muscle tension and thermoregulation issues. But I'm still getting out there! I felt profound gratitude for getting to be in this awe-inducing park and for conquering some fears. If 2023 anointed me the 👸 of the Caribbean, 2024 has rewarded me with being a renewed 👸 of the hills. And I ain't mad about it. Thank you for the profound beauty and experience @visitutah

When the green mountains begin to shift to grey🌿⛰️ This is a perfect example of how my daily point form journal helps keep my memory of moments I'd otherwise forget. Written in today's 🗓️: hike up crazy hill with steps cold valley at lunch walked to chame If someone else were to read my point form notes, they might seem insignificant, but they serve their purpose perfectly. Because of these notes, I'm able to visually recall the empty restaurant we ate in at lunch. The windows rattled at the force of the strong wind beating against them. I look back on the image of myself and my friends dragging ourselves up the steps, putting all our weight into our trusty trekking poles as they clank into the stone. In Chame, I remember meeting a German hiker at our guesthouse who was trekking the Annapurna Circuit for the third time in his life (his pace was much faster than ours!) The point form notes jog my memory so I can remember both people I've met, places I've visited, and how I've felt in all these tiny little moments. #travelwriting #travelwriter #nepaltravel #annapurnacircuit #trekkinglife

I love watching the world from above; that fleeting feeling of weightlessness. The world seems so vast and untouched from up here. I love that first glimpse of a new country as you make your descent; a tiny, new piece of the world awaiting to be discovered. Hoping the only blue thing about this Monday is the skies. Have a wonderful week ahead. 🩵 How absolutely stunning is this book mail I received recently? 📘Enchanted Islands: A Mediterranean Odyssey by Laura Coffey. {publication date 2nd May} 📘 📝 “It started with a boy, of course. Seeking solace from the pain of heartbreak and her father’s illness, Laura Coffey embarks on what was meant to be a simple holiday. But her newfound fascination with ancient Greek myths transforms her trip into a six-month odyssey, around tiny archipelagos and mystical Mediterranean islands thought to be the setting of Odysseus’s epic journey. As she chases one of the most conflicted, flawed and yet beloved heroes through his fantastical sea-kingdoms, looking for the places where geography and mythology collide, she discovers the wild beauty of the islands, and the redemptive powers of travel and nature, cold-water swimming, long hikes up mountains, and luminous star-lit skies. But her quest to find happiness, safety and the true meaning of home is overshadowed by the deepening illness of her father. Returning as he’s dying, forced to confront the very things she was running from, Laura reflects on what she has lost, how to live between story and reality, and the way we craft our own mythologies. Slipping between the mythical realm and the real world, she finds enchantment and healing in the magic of both.”📝 Image contains gifted items. @summersdalebooks @l_j_coffey #bookstagram #april2024 #memoir #bookflatlay #bookrecommodations #readersofinstagram #beautifulbooks #maybooks #booksaremagic #bookcommunity #bookcovers #beautifulbookcovers

I wanted to go for a hike in the northeast mountains of Taiwan - but wasn’t sure what was close by and safe to go after the earthquake earlier this month. The receptionist at my boutique hotel didn’t have recommendations, so I walked over to the tourism info centre. Had an entire conversation through google translate - but it got lost in translation. What she was recommending kept getting translated into words like “riviera” and “sardine” 😂 and finally we gave up. She just told me to take a certain bus till its last stop. I got on the bus but didn’t have exact change, and neither did the driver. The Taiwanese guy behind me didn’t either, but he just paid my fare! Turned out he had travelled up from Taipei with a friend, and planned to head up on a hike as well. I tagged behind them for a while, as the trail led through wide winding paths, up endless flights of stairs, past trees bursting in tiny pink and purple wildflowers. The steep uphill was tiring, and I lost them on the way as I stopped to contemplate the insane scenery — the mountains rose and fell into the yinyang sea (so called because the minerals give it a light blue color amidst the dark blue water), and the hills were dotted with shrines. Silvery blue butterflies darted about, shrubs were covered in wild berries, and a bright green snake crossed my path. Close to the top of the hike, I felt like I was the only one on the mountain. A light drizzle had started. I felt a bit worried about being up there alone, with no one aware of my whereabouts - but finally saw the two friends again and felt relieved. Up on the hill, we chatted about the sweet taro balls (made of sweet potato), a speciality of Jiufen - and they recommended I try the (accidentally vegan) peanut-coriander ice cream roll when I get back to town. We separated again as we hiked down the mountain. I stopped to chill in a shrine-like pitstop for hikers, and got lost in my own world. But at the bottom of the hill, I saw them again on the same bus - and we felt like long lost friends 💚

‘Step by Step: The Life in My Journeys’ by Simon Reeve: 4/5 ⭐️ A fascinating insight into Simon’s early life and his journey to becoming a top BBC travel documentary maker. I am a huge fan of Simon’s programmes. They go deeper than your classic travel shows. He doesn’t shy away from difficult issues and totally immerses himself in whatever society he is in. But Simon is not another middle class media graduate or in fact a graduate at all. He built his career up from nothing. Sure there was some luck along the way but I found his journey quite inspiring. The book was a little slow in places but mostly very engaging. #simonreeve #travelbook #travelwriting #travel #bookreview #bookstagram

A short extract from Bothy: In Search of Simple Shelter, out May 9th. “We all need refuge from something at one time or another, from work, the world or even ourselves. Not everyone seeks it in a small four-walled building or a tent in the mountains, but beyond being a shelter from the elements or the dark, bothies can be a kind of refuge too from fears that plague us or dangers that chase us….It is not hard to see why Corrour bothy appeals if you want to run away for a while. April 28, 2018: What happens when the scenic side trail leads you stranded without lunch? 😓 After the last set of stone steps up the steep hill to Odar leveled off into the town we realized luck was not on our side.🤦🏻‍♀️ The dirt roads were empty and silent. We saw only one man who told us all residents were out at a football match in another village. As we headed out the other end of town, we noticed a woman standing outside of a house. Using gestures to ask where I can find food, she instantly invited us to her home for lunch after we agreed upon a price per meal.🥳 She sent us upstairs to the roof of the house to relax while she cooked the food. We took off our boots and lied horizontal. You can swipe your see our meal of dhal baat and rice, and the kitchen where she cooked.🍚 Before we left the woman at the house asked if we could take a picture with her (last photo in this post). This picture of us stacked on the ladder with peace signs fills me with such joy. Despite the hunger and exhaustion our side trail to Odar was worth experiencing the kindness and generosity of these locals who give their hearts out to us silly backpackers who are semi-prepared at best 😅 This story (in more detail than can be included in a post) is in my upcoming memoir. Make sure to follow if you want to hear about more adventures like this. #travelwriting #travelwriter #traveldiary #nepaltravel #annapurnacircuit

#maastricht #paysbas #nederland #netherlands #vagabond #travelwriting #nickcave #europe #unioneuropéenne

Wait. Is this - a ...? Yes. And it's everywhere. Take your prick, if you pardon the pun: in the 15th century, the revered Lam Drukpa Kuenley taunted the hypocrisy of established orders, using his manhood as a 'flaming thunderbolt', loving women and wine. Today, bhutanese society reveres him for unveiling the discomfort of society when facing the truth. But on the third day of this fabulous trip to #bhutan organised by @segara and @tourismbhutan there were also more glorious mountains - the highest unscaled summits on Earth - delicious lunch, bright blossom and long, hot drives. But A kept his promise and today wore a striped Gho! At sunset, we arrived for the night @@sixsensesbhutan Punakha.
