Maiden Tower The Maiden Tower is a 12th-century monument in the Old City, Baku, Azerbaijan. It is one of Azerbaijan’s most distinctive national emblems, and is thus featured on Azerbaijani currency notes and official letterheads. The Maiden Tower houses a museum, which presents the story of the historic evolution of Baku city. The view from the roof takes in the alleys and minarets of the Old City, the Baku Boulevard and a wide vista of the Baku Bay. The Tower is surrounded by legends rooted in the history and culture of Azerbaijan. Indeed, some epics became a subject for scenario for ballets and theatre’s plays. The ballet Maiden Tower is a world-class masterpiece of the Azerbaijani ballet created by composer Afrasiyab Badalbeyli in 1940; a remake of the ballet was performed in 1999. There are various mysteries and legends related to Baku’s Maiden Tower. However, the main mystery is the Tower’s design and purpose. Meanwhile, there are up to 20 legends related to Baku Maiden Tower. A large number of them are connected to the Islamic and Medieval period of Baku’s history. But others are rooted deeply in Azerbaijan’s Zoroastrian or pre-Islamic history, religion, and culture. Probably, the most famous legend is that of the fiery-haired virgin girl who saved Baku’s people from slavery. The epic shows roots to Azerbaijan’s Zoroastrian beliefs and culture and has reached down to modern times. Consequent to the receding of the sea shoreline of the Caspian Sea, a strip of land emerged. Had to swing by the Blarney Castle since I was in Cork. What blows my mind about the castle is the fact that it’s been standing since the 1400s! The Blarney Stone itself was interesting. I didn’t realize that the only way to kiss the limestone slab was to lay on your back and tilt your head far back in order to reach it. They had gentlemen at the top that helped hold you down. Legend has it that kissing the stone will gift the kisser the gift of eloquence. I’m still waiting for the gift to arrive 💁🏽♀️. Apparently the powers of the stone were granted by a witch? Considering they an entire poison garden on the grounds that makes complete sense to me. Other parts of the garden definitely gave off that ‘witch that lives in a cabin in the middle of the woods’ vibe. I have soo many amazing things to say about Spain (and I will in future posts)🇪🇸✨… However, my travel experience was lowkey a nightmare 😭… After a connecting flight from Switzerland to Barcelona, I received a message saying my luggage would be delayed for another 3 hours. I still don’t understand how my luggage didn’t get transferred on to a connecting flight…but nevertheless, I had a plan… I packed my dress for the wedding welcome party and decided to buy shoes and accessories at the airport, get on the shuttle (that I paid for in advance) and make it to the party just in time to celebrate. I was soo happy to have found shoes so quickly at the airport and figured the disaster was adverted…I was wrong…😑 After waiting 30 minutes for the shuttle driver to arrive and being reassured that “they were on their way” I called their customer care and was told that I would need to find another way to Lloret de Mar (a town an hour away from the airport) because “they were not coming.” This left me with two options…Option #1 was to take an uber/taxi for $200 to make the party and figure out how to get my luggage later or Option #2 wait another 5 hours for the WAY more affordable train and arrive around 10:30pm 🥴. Keep in mind, I was traveling solo… I decided to wait an extra 3 hours for my luggage at the airport because I didn’t trust them to ship my luggage in time for the wedding the next day and for safety reasons, I took the expensive taxi to Lloret de Mar (shoutout to my family for splitting the cost with me tho!)😮💨 This definitely was one of the most stressful travel experiences I’ve had, but I was grateful to get my luggage and still attend the wedding 🫶🏾 Anywho, this is a picture of the outfit I never got to wear. Had an amazing morning in Regensburg, Germany! Started the day off right with beer and sausage, and squeezed in some sightseeing too. Regensburg is a Bavarian city known for its medieval architecture, including the 12th-century Stone Bridge and the 13th-century Regensburg Cathedral. The Walhalla, a Parthenon replica, is also a must-see in the area.
