Diocletian’s Aqueduct. Split, Croatia. - When you drive on the highway in or out of Split, take a closer look and you may see a 1700 year old aqueduct. Split, Croatia. - In the street behind Split’s fish market, through a door and down a hallway that’s only open from 9am until noon, you will find the former Convent of Santa María de Taurello (Nekadašnji Samostan sv. Marije), or at least the ruins. We’ve been in Split for eight months and didn’t know this existed until today when we were in the area and spotted the open door. For one, it looks very different from the rest of the center with more of a Venice vibe than a southern Croatia vibe. - And two, it changes by the season. When we first arrived it was home to one of the city’s biggest open air Christmas villages complete with an ice rink and multicolored tree. Blue Tree. Split, Croatia. - Everyone in Split knows the Blue Tree. It’s an iconic symbol on the corner of Slobode Ulica and Mažuranićevo Šetalište, but it wasn’t always there. Its previous location was outside of the studio of its creator, renowned local artist Vasko Lipovac. HNK Split. - The Croatian National Theatre (Hrvatsko Narodno Kazalište) in Split is beautiful both inside and out. We recently went to the ballet on opening night of The Great Gatsby, a book I know well after having taught it for seven straight years. - Needless to say, the ballet was a completely different experience (in the best ways!) and they stayed true to the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic so it was easy to follow. After the show, I have a new found respect for the spectacular shape that the dancers are in. Split, Croatia. - A few nights ago, filming was being done for a TV show or movie so many of the lights in Diocletian’s Palace in the old city of Split were turned off and set lights were blazing. As you can see from the right and left sides of this photo, it was quite the contrast. - Combine the unusual darkness with a perfectly clear sky, and despite the urban setting, many stars were perfectly visible. It was a stunning sight. Gregory of Nin. Split, Croatia. - The statue of Grgur Ninski (Gregory of Nin) is one of the iconic symbols of Split. Standing over eight meters tall and just beyond the Golden Gate of Diocletian’s Palace (picture 3), it is imposing and majestic. The work of renowned sculptor Ivan Meštrović, the local tradition is to rub his big toe for luck. The octagonal Venetian Tower (built in 1435) is the centerpiece but all of the buildings in the square colloquially known as Voćni Trg (Fruit Square after the former market that inhabited this space) are equally charming. - In front of the understated Milesi Palace sits the statue of Croatian writer and Split native Marko Marulić. Kaštel Gomilica, Croatia. - Just a few kilometers outside of Split, seven villages with small castles dot the coast. Collectively, they’re known as Kaštela. - This is a photo of Kaštel Gomilica, one of the best preserved castles on the coast, built as a sanctuary by a group of nuns about 500 years ago.
