Pouring a paper mold can make for some splashy results as the paper combusts more rapidly within the mold and pushes the molten iron out in dramatic 3000° fireworks. But the results, this time, dance in the piece “Shimmy” Pouring this piece can be seen in my last post. These reactive molds can be very dramatic in their creation. I guess they are their own performance piece. Though I just think of it as part of the integral creative process. Somehow we have decided to define a piece by the end product, and I think that’s why we all love to see pieces where the process is subtly revealed in the sub structure. The creation of iron sculpture is such a dynamic and dramatic process. That’s why I have #Ironography as part of my iron sculpture practice. Sometimes things just need to be adjusted over a long period of time to become a sculpture. I find that especially when working with used materials. Learning the vocabulary, history, and sub text of an item you might incorporate can sometimes take a while. Though inspiration for a piece sometimes comes as a flash, a bit of time sometimes allows me a different perspective. I’ll often let a work in progress sit on the shop patio for months or more while I figure out the nuances and moods of a piece. Often daily adjustments are done in the few spare moments as I walk past to my day job work truck in the morning and back home at night. Often ideas for a modification come from an inspiration I sketched down in the bedside journal moments before drifting off to sleep. Finally if I feel it’s right, I’ll solidify the attachments. Then where to put the damn thing! That’s always the biggest challenge.
