At the time I was exploring ideas around growth, change and what we have to leave behind in order to move on. Although I made this piece quite some time ago, I still feel a real connection to this particular sculpture. In many ways the thoughts and themes I was working on back then have come full circle and current influences in my work now. This is so often the way with life and especially with art. Here we see a photo of the little known about #sculpture that is titled "Athena Tritogeneia", that is located at Belimarković Castle in Vrnjačka Banja, Serbia. This sculpture was created by famous Belgrade #architect and artist Bogdan Bogdanović in 1981 as part of the 3rd annual Vrnjačka Banja sculpture symposium, which he participated in while working on his nearby massive monument project at Popina Spomen Park. This modest stone sculpture depicts the goddess Athena, who is often represented in antiquity as a wise owl figure, which explains the shape of the work. As far as "Tritogeneia", that was another name often used to refer to Athena. Opening Event: Thursday 2nd May 5:30 pm - 8:30pm The Sculpture Gallery Call Ln, Leeds LS1 7BR Neil has worked in various settings including education, artist-in-residence and visiting lecturer, alongside his studio practice producing sculpture for exhibition and public commissions. Neil uses the figure as a vehicle to experiment with materials and visual language. He attempts to express ideas about the world we inhabit and the nature of human experience and relationships. In his recent work, Neil conveys an emotional response to a range of ideas about the human condition in the twenty first century by employing a mid-twentieth century aesthetic and sculptural tradition. This is done, to varying degrees of abstraction, in cast bronze or constructed steel. Overall, the work is a response to various humanitarian challenges of the world today. This piece called The Kings Chamber, now showing at The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden, near Guildford which is open to the public. Two new pieces produced for this years opening on the 8th of June. I took the chance to put some thoughts towards the plinth, carving it to fit the dynamic form of the piece of raw Purbeck marble. This sculpture works like an icon, that being, it’s activated once stood in front of and little work has been done on the reverse side. It stands 180cm tall.
