Review: “The Roundup: Punishment.” Since 2017’s “The Outlaws,” actor Ma Dong-seok (a.k.a. and credited here as Don Lee) has led what would become the “Crime City” series, an action crime series that borrows from Korean headlines for the foundation of each film. Each film utilizes both Lee’s natural physicality and comedic timing to create a law enforcement figurehead in Detective Ma Seok-do that audiences can root for in the way that his soft touch reveals a tenderness toward humanity and his hard touch can put the bad guys down with an equally big hurt. 2024 Movies #38 Badland Hunters - ★★ (2024) Directed by Heo Myeong-haeng 45/100 It's like a cheap Mad Max version of Concrete Utopia, both films from South Korea and in both films the world went to shit after a massive earthquake. But while Concrete Utopia is a depiction of the disappearance of moral order in order to survive, Badland Hunters is pure mindless action aimed purely at amusement. With Ma Dong-seok at the helm I wasn't expecting anything different if I'm being perfectly honest. While it's true that the motives for most of its events are dumb and the villain is incredibly cartoonish despite the dark undertones of his investigation, it's more than clear that this movie wasn't going to go any deeper into that. The Roundup: No Way Out - ★★½ (2023) Directed by Lee Sang-yong 50/100 It's so close to its predecessor that it's hard to see them as separate entities. Its virtues persist unaltered, again almost all the physical and comedic effort rests on the shoulders of Ma Dong-seok. While this is by no means a negative aspect, it fails to ignite any noteworthy excitement, you know? The film's formula runs out of steam soon and its unoriginal, simplistic, and predictable plot transforms it into a fleeting spectacle that merely relies on the viewer's passing interest and fleeting attention to carry them through to the end, since evidently, you won't remember anything about it after a few days. Such is the ephemeral nature of its manufacture. Although in its country of origin, this film has undeniably achieved resounding success, that a fourth movie titled The Roundup: Punishment is already in the pipeline for next year, and apparently there are plans for a fifth and a sixth installment. In all honesty that's not something that surprises me in the least, but it doesn't leave me satisfied in any way either. Although by its numbers in South Korea, audiences loved them both as the success of the first one brought this one to life, and the success of this one has landed it an already approved third installment. The Roundup is merely a piece of entertainment with no major intentions or pretensions. The Outlaws - ★★½ Directed by Kang Yun-sung 50/100 Depending on what you can overlook is how you may find this film more digestible, though if you don't want to dig too much into a more sophisticated or elaborate plot, then I think it will be even easier to enjoy what is shown. The approach of The Outlaws is very straightforward. If you know the genre, especially as far as what the South Koreans do, then you'll know by heart what they're doing here. Fantasia International Film Festival Review: "The Roundup." Actor/writer/producer Don Lee, also known as Ma Dong-seok, has been making movies since 2005. He’s had roles in "The Good the Bad the Weird" (2008), "Mother Vengeance" (2012), a scene-stealing role in "Train to Busan" (2016), and, of course, the ass-kicking Gligamesh in "Eternals" (2021). His roles vacillate between tough and tender, dramatic and comedic, with such incredible ease that it’s easy to become enamored with even the worst characters Lee portrays. Thankfully, the role of Korean detective Ma Seok-do in "The Outlaws" series doesn’t fall under that category; instead, he’s a dedicated officer who walks a weird path in order to get the job done, as though ripped from a less modern era of action cinema and is just as endearing. Having its Quebec premiere at Fantasia International Film Festival 2022, Ma Seok-do returns in "The Outlaws 2," a.k.a. "The Roundup," to protect the streets of Korea from a murderous sociopath. As in "The Outlaws," "Ma Seok-do" will use every tool in his kit to take down the bad guys, whether it’s a stern word, a hard slap, or a rib-breaking punch.
