Free bicycle helmets are now being offered to kids and teens in Anchorage. They're being given out at all Anchorage Fire Department stations. The goal of the giveaway is to keep kiddos safe while they're out riding this summer. Your Alaska Link stopped by Station 1 where some kids were stopping by to grab helmets. "AFD, Providence, and Safe Kids Alaska are really happy to help the public and were happy to get helmets out there on people's heads who need them. So come on by and were happy to get you fitted with a helmet," said AFD Captain Dustin Molle. Parents: If you want a helmet for your child, make sure to bring them by the fire station with you so their new helmet can be fitted and adjusted. Supplies are also limited. So maybe stop by sooner rather than later. This program is made possible by Safe Kids Alaska, the Anchorage Fire Department, and Anchorage Fire Fighters Union Local 1264. May is National Bicycle Safety Month! Together, we can educate the public on the importance of bicycle safety and encourage more people to ride safely and wear helmets. Please read (and share) the below tips for drivers and bicyclists. For Drivers 🚗 ● Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. When driving, look out for bicyclists, and never drive distracted or impaired. Bicyclists do not have the same protections as a vehicle. ● Yield to bicyclists as you would motorists and do not underestimate their speed. This will help avoid turning in front of a bicyclist traveling on the road or sidewalk, often at an intersection or driveway. ● Drivers turning right on red should look to the right and behind to avoid hitting a bicyclist approaching from the right rear. Stop completely and look left-right-left and behind before turning right on red. ● Give cyclists room. Do not pass too closely. Pass bicyclists as you would any other vehicle—when it’s safe to move over into an adjacent lane. For Bicyclists 🚴🏼‍♂️ ● Just like seat belts help save lives in a motor vehicle crash, bicycle helmets save lives, too. When biking, always wear a helmet. ● Whether daytime, dawn, dusk, bad weather, or at night, make yourself visible to others. Wear neon, fluorescent or other bright colors when riding, to be most easily seen. Wear something that reflects light, such as reflective tape or markings, or flashing lights. Remember, just because you can see a driver doesn’t mean the driver can see you. ● Ride with two hands on the handlebars, except when signaling a turn. Place books and other items in a bicycle carrier or backpack. ● Look for hazards such as potholes, broken glass, gravel, puddles, leaves, and dogs. All these hazards can cause a crash. ● It’s hard for road users to see bicyclists at dusk, dawn, and nighttime. Use reflectors on the front and rear of your bicycle.
