Black phoebe It is a flycatcher that can be primarily seen in the western part of the US. It's body is a more sooty gray in colour with a prominent white belly. They sit on low branches to catch insects and make short, quick flights if they spot something. While observing them, as far their perching and insect catching behaviour was concerned, I found them quite similar to the black drongo. #photooftheday #cornelllabofornithology #ebird #bbcwildlife #bbcwildlife #zeissnature #birds_private #birds_private #birdlovers #birdsofcalifornia #birdsofinstagram #birdsoforangecounty #yourshotphotographer #natgeoyourshot #flycatcher #shotoncanon #canon_photos #canon_photography #sonybbcearth

The American coot (Fulica americana), also known as a mud hen or pouldeau, is a bird of the family Rallidae. Though commonly mistaken for ducks, American coots are only distantly related to ducks, belonging to a separate order. Unlike the webbed feet of ducks, coots have broad, lobed scales on their lower legs and toes that fold back with each step which facilitates walking on dry land. #americancoot #fulicaamericana #mudhen #birding #birdsoforangecounty

"I'm very happy being me, although sometimes I'd love to be a bird so that I could fly." ~Joy Fielding Swinhoe's white-eye (Zosterops simplex) is a bird species in the white-eye family Zosteropidae. It is found in east China, Taiwan, north Vietnam, the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. Populations have also been introduced throughout Southern California. This bird is a small yellow-olive warbler-like bird with a prominent white eyering. It can be found in forests, shrublands, parks, gardens, farmlands, and urban areas, where it actively forages for fruit, insects, and nectar from the understory to the top of the forest canopy. (Wikipedia.org / ebird.org) Another photo from the awesome #christmasbirdcount put on by @sea_and_sage_audubon . During the walk we had paused in a parking lot and in the trees were several of these Swinhoe's White-eyes. One of them was on a branch and I was able to catch it before it flew away and at one point (they are very quick), it looked directly at me! #didyouknow / #funfacts: Swinhoe's white-eye was formally described in 1861 by the English naturalist Robert Swinhoe. The genus name combines the Ancient Greek words zōstēros meaning "belt" or "girdle" and ōpos meaning "eye". The specific epithet simplex is Latin meaning "simple" or "plain". “If birds can glide for long periods of time, then why can’t I?” ~ Orville Wright The “blue jay” of dry lowlands along the Pacific seaboard, the California Scrub-Jay combines deep azure blue, clean white underparts, and soft gray-brown. It looks very similar to the Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay (they were considered the same species until 2016), but is brighter and more contrasting, with a bold blue breast band. #funfacts / #didyouknow: California Scrub-Jays are fond of sunflower seeds and peanuts at feeders. They've been caught stealing acorns from Acorn Woodpecker caches, and some even steal acorns they've watched other jays hide. When these birds go to hide their own acorns, they check first that no other jays are watching. You might see California Scrub-Jays standing on the back of a mule deer. They’re eating ticks and other parasites. The deer seem to appreciate the help, often standing still and holding up their ears to give the jays access. (AllAboutBirds.org) These California Scrub Jays were seen during the #christmasbirdcount put on by @sea_and_sage_audubon . "If you keep your feathers well oiled, the water of criticism will run off as from a duck's back." ~ Ellen Swallow Richards The male Cinnamon Teal shimmers with a rich ruddy plumage, made all the more incandescent by the summer sun slanting across reedy wetlands in interior western North America. Males molt this brilliant plumage soon after breeding #funfacts / #didyouknow: The female Cinnamon Teal often places her nest below matted, dead stems of vegetation so it is completely concealed on all sides and from above. She approaches the nest through tunnels in the vegetation. (AllAboutBirds.org) As I was walking around #sanjoaquinwildlifesanctuary , I noticed this Cinnamon Teal coming in for a water landing. Quickly taking a few photos, I loved how I was able to freeze the landing. Upon closer inspection, I noticed in one of the photos, the duck's eye was showing through it's feathers! "Still, when all is said, somewhere one must belong: even the soaring falcon returns to its master's wrist." ~ Truman Capote Merlins are small, fierce falcons that use surprise attacks to bring down small songbirds and shorebirds. They are powerful fliers, but you can tell them from larger falcons by their rapid wingbeats and overall dark tones. Be ready to look quickly—Merlins cover a lot of ground and can be out of range in just a few seconds. Scanning treetops and low perches at forest edges, grasslands, or saltmarshes can also turn up a perched Merlin and the opportunity for a longer view. #funfacts / #didyouknow: Merlins don’t build their own nests. Instead, they take over the old nests of other raptors or crows. They also use magpie nests, sometimes laying eggs right on top of the nest’s dome rather than inside the cavity. (AllAboutBirds.org) This Merlin was perched on a tree for a very long time during this bird walk. It was completed undisturbed by our large group walking beneath him. "Imagine, for example, birds. When they look out at the world, they have a sense that they are alive. If they are in pain, they can do something about it. If they have hunger or thirst, they can satisfy that. It's this basic feeling that there is life ticking away inside of you. ~ Antonio Damasio An assertive bird of dry open country, the gray and lemon-yellow Cassin's Kingbird hunts flying insects from high perches. The bird’s scientific name translates to “vociferous tyrant,” and it fits this loud, aggressive songbird well. #funfacts / #didyouknow As with many birds of the American Southwest, Cassin’s Kingbirds are summer residents in the United States that migrate to Mexico for the winter. The species also has a large population in Mexico that does not migrate, a pattern known as “partial migration.” Cassin’s Kingbirds often sing at night and are sometimes mistaken for nightjars and other night birds. (AllAboutBirds.org) Hungry? 🤣 I absolutely did not expect to see this amazing sight! I was walking around #sanjoaquinwildlifesanctuary and stopped to talk with another birdwatcher/photographer. As we were about to walk away, he noticed something up in a tree and mentioned to me it's a bird eating a dragonfly! I looked through my binoculars, and it was this Cassin's Kingbird. Northern Flickers are large, brown woodpeckers with a gentle expression and handsome black-scalloped plumage. On walks, don’t be surprised if you scare one up from the ground. It’s not where you’d expect to find a woodpecker, but flickers eat mainly ants and beetles, digging for them with their unusual, slightly curved bill. #funfacts / #didyouknow Although it can climb up the trunks of trees and hammer on wood like other woodpeckers, the Northern Flicker prefers to find food on the ground. Ants are its main food, and the flicker digs in the dirt to find them. It uses its long barbed tongue to lap up the ants. Like most woodpeckers, Northern Flickers drum on objects as a form of communication and territory defense. In such cases, the object is to make as loud a noise as possible, and that’s why woodpeckers sometimes drum on metal objects. (AllAboutBirds.org) I had not seen this bird before and it was climbing up this tree. I quickly took a few pictures and then decided to figure out what it was. I pulled out my app and awaited its call. It didn't disappoint and soon made a piercing yelp. This was my first sighting and picture of a Northern Flicker! "This morning two mockingbirds in the green field were spinning and tossing the white ribbons of their songs into the air. I had nothing better to do than listen.” ~ Mary Oliver If you’ve been hearing an endless string of 10 or 15 different birds singing outside your house, you might have a Northern Mockingbird in your yard. These slender-bodied gray birds apparently pour all their color into their personalities. They sing almost endlessly, even sometimes at night, and they flagrantly harass birds that intrude on their territories, flying slowly around them or prancing toward them, legs extended, flaunting their bright white wing patches. #funfacts / #didyouknow Northern Mockingbirds continue to add new sounds to their repertoires throughout their lives. A male may learn around 200 songs throughout its life. It’s not just other mockingbirds that appreciate a good song. In the nineteenth century, people kept so many mockingbirds as cage birds that the birds nearly vanished from parts of the East Coast. People took nestlings out of nests or trapped adults and sold them in cities such as Philadelphia, St. Louis, and New York, where, in 1828, extraordinary singers could fetch as much as $50. (AllAboutBirds.org) The Mockingbird Spirit Animal carries several messages on its wings. Perhaps the most important one is that of finding your voice and the music that inspires your soul. Your “song” has power – the vibration in your words ring out with intent. There is no need to keep this powerful energy within. Sing! (https://whatismyspiritanimal.com) I love the lighting on this Northern Mockingbird. This was on a walk at #uppernewportbaynaturepreserve put on by Sea and Sage Audubon. “I go to nature to be soothed and healed and to have my senses put in order.” ~ John Burroughs This bird walk started off pretty quiet as we didn't see many birds but the second half of it really took off (literally and figuratively)! Thanks to @lagunacanyonfoundation for the amazing walk. The day was made even more fun by us seeing a couple families of mule deer on the hillside! We saw the following birds and wildlife (and likely a few more which I didn't get a picture of): 1 - Northern Mockingbird 2 - California Scrub-Jay 3 - Anna's Hummingbird 4 - California Mule Deer 5 - Nutall's Woodpecker 6 - California Thrasher 7-8 - Red-Shouldered Hawk #didyouknow / #funfacts: Northern Mockingbirds continue to add new sounds to their repertoires throughout their lives. The osprey sails above the sound; The geese are gone, the gulls are flying; The herring shoals swarm thick around; The nets are launched, the boats are plying. Yo, ho, my hearts! let's seek the deep, Raise high the song, and cheerly wish her, Still as the bending net we sweep, "God bless the Fish hawk and the fisher!" "The Fisherman's Hymn" ~ Alexander Wilson Unique among North American raptors for its diet of live fish and ability to dive into water to catch them, Ospreys are common sights soaring over shorelines, patrolling waterways, and standing on their huge stick nests, white heads gleaming. #didyouknow / #funfacts: The name "Osprey" made its first appearance around 1460, via the Medieval Latin phrase for "bird of prey" (avis prede). Some wordsmiths trace the name even further back, to the Latin for "bone-breaker"—ossifragus. I saw this Osprey in the same tree as the Kite at #sanjoaquinwildlifesanctuary, on different days, though. I had not seen one this close before! “God gives every bird its food, but He does not throw it into its nest.” ~ J. G. Holland One of North America’s two marvelously elegant, black-and-white grebes, Clark’s Grebe is a bird of Western lakes and coastlines. Its sinuous neck and angular head give it an almost snakelike air. During the breeding season, look for Clark’s Grebes on freshwater lakes with marshy edges. In the winter, they move to coastal waters along the Pacific Coast, where they may occur alongside Western Grebes—so look for Clark’s more yellow-orange bill. #didyouknow / #funfacts: Grebes are not ducks! Grebes lack webbed feet (unlike ducks) in favor of lobed toes, but their legs attach further back on their body than those of coots or ducks, making it very awkward for them to move on land. Western and Clark’s Grebes were considered the same species until 1985, after scientists learned that the two species rarely interbreed (despite sometimes living on the same lakes), make different calls, and have substantial DNA differences. (madisonaudubon.org / AllAboutBirds.org) The last few months have seen a lot of breeding going on. This family of Clark's Grebes is just starting out with 2 chicks being fed by momma and poppa. These were seen during a walk at #sanjoaquinwildlifesanctuary put on by @sea_and_sage_audubon . “Watching birds has become part of my daily meditation affirming my connection to the earth body.” ~ Carol P. Christ Grasslands and savannas are great places to fly a kite and that's exactly where you will find the White-tailed Kite. Its white underparts, gleaming white tail, and black shoulder patches are its marks of distinction. White-tailed Kites have a limited distribution in the United States, so your best bet is to head to a grassland in California or Texas. They generally start foraging just after dawn, when you'll likely catch them hovering into the wind with their head hanging down. #didyouknow / #funfacts: During the non-breeding season, the White-tailed Kite roosts communally. Sometimes, more than 100 individuals pile into a few trees or tall shrubs at the edge of a grassland or savanna. (AllAboutBirds.org) As I was walking around #sanjoaquinmarshandwildlifesanctuary , I noticed this grayish bird sitting on top of a tree that I did not recognize. Upon putting my binoculars on it, I knew it was something new to me. I asked other bird watchers about it and was told it was White-tailed Kite! I love its red eyes and gaze. #whitetailedkite #whitetailedkitesofinstagram #birdofprey birds #birdlovers #birdwatchers #birdphotos #birdstagram #instabird #birding #birdwatching #birdsofinstagram #birdphotography #birdphoto #wildlife #wildlifephotography #birdsoforangecounty #nature #naturelovers #letsgooutside #photographer #california #birdsofcalifornia #canonphotographers #teamcanon #shotoncanon #sanjoaquinwildlifesanctuary
