Gold in Gold Golden Jackal Canis aureus After about 2 months of being unable to go on a photo walk due to the heat, I finally got a cool breeze. I capitalised on this and went on a evening shoot. The heat had its effect on the birds so the birding was very dull. But I was lucky to spot a pair of golden jackals. They had made their den/burrow right next to a tiny pond. I crept inch by inch closer to the area. But whatever measures I took for stealth was not that effective so they spotted me. Upon seeing my figure, they carefully diverted me away from their den. Probably they could have had a litter inside. I followed them maintaining a safe distance so as to not spook them too much. I sat down between some shrubs and waited for the pair to settle down. Sure enough the two halted in a flat patch of grass. This species has greenish legs and a short, thin, dark bill. Breeding adults are brown with dark brown streaks on top and white underneath. They have a light line above the eye and a dark crown. Rhacophorus rhodopus New record for Phuket!!! Although this species has been heard calling by a few people before, this is the first official sighting of one (to my knowledge). While I was herping late in the night, I decided to try a new path that I had never been on before. As I was walking through, I could see plenty of life and then this frog that caught my eye. At first glance, I thought to myself it was a normal tree frog, but something looked off. I decided to get a closer look and instantly couldn't believe my eyes. 4/27/24: Jackpot! I stopped at Lock and Dam 21 today to try and get something decent of the Cliff Swallows I’ve seen flying in and around the lock area. They’re tiny (5-6 inches), fast, and elusive. My efforts have been frustrating, to say the least. Today, after shooting a bit at the dock area, I drove over to the Lock and Dam viewing area, to try out a different setting on my camera. Driving up, I was amazed by the number of Cliff Swallows; hundreds, for sure, flying into and out of a couple large mud holes just outside the gate. Spring migrants begin arriving in Illinois in April. Some nest in Illinois, but most go farther north. I believe, based on the available nesting areas, and access to food and water, this bunch is staying in Quincy. Nesting occurs in colonies in May and June. Cliff Swallows build their mud nests on cliff faces and other vertical surfaces containing hundreds, even thousands of other birds. They also build nests in the eaves of buildings. When Cliff Swallows arrive at their breeding grounds in North America, the dirty work begins, scooping up mud in their beaks and carefully building a gourd-shaped nest with a tapered opening. Technically called an adherent cup, a finished nest contains over 1,000 mud pellets. Three to six white eggs with dark markings are placed in the nest. The Cliff Swallow is a common migrant and rare summer resident in Illinois. Its winter range is from Panama south to the tip of South America. 4/27/24: Red Admiral Butterfly. Not our first butterfly of the season, but the first one where I was sitting on the back porch, with a camera in hand. 😎 Red Admirals can be found yearlong in warmer states and in Mexico, but only in the summer months in the north. They produce one or two broods during their time up north. The cold winters kill off any that remain. Adults in warm regions hibernate through the winter.
