~ Pekin Duck (Drake)  ~ . A small number of these rather friendly domestic type ducks call this location home. They've been here for what seems like years and I see them every time I come here but as much as I love ducks of any kind I never photograph them. I do however, always say hello to them as I walk past (not kidding) but never photograph them. . Anyway, on this particular day a few weeks back, there were a myriad of different birds swimming around in the water in the area including Cotton Pygmy-Geese, Pacific Black and Hardhead Ducks, Black Swans, Magpie-Geese, etc, so I decided to sit down quietly on the grass at the water's edge and just take in the serenity for a little bit before heading home (after walking around the area with my camera for about three hours). After a while, this guy swam out in front of me and started preening his feathers so I lay down and started clicking away. The "poses" that were forthcoming as a result of the preening process were quite beautiful I thought and this image is one of them. . :: Kookaburra ⚭ Friday morning, The weekend transformation begins. In wagon trains and singly,hordes of punters arrive. Everyone posturing, vying for the best position. I have mine. A high and dry vantage; sheltered, sunny, quiet. I’ve done this before. Left of me Kooka sits on the shipping rope I dragged up from the beach years ago. Below me the Goanna has settled in for a sunbake. I kid myself that they agree I have the best spot. They could be elsewhere. Firewood is the great indicator. It’s brought or bought, only the amount is different. It’s the copious amounts that catch Kooky’s & mine eyes. For Kooky, there’ll be a feast. It’s the plentiful season. For me it means alcohol, partying, noise, earplugs, questionable sleep. I ask Kooky about those clouds, can he smell rain. I’m talking to my self so I continue and pray for evening rain. Rain is the great dampener. It quells fires, parties, alcohol, noise. It brings sleep. Kooky and Go-ey are gone. Kooky’ll be back Sunday arvo, Go-ey, Monday mid-morning. Sunday morning. It’s over! Pack-up time. As the cars leave it’s my turn. I grab bags and scour and scab my way through the campground. Shamelessly. Firewood is the commodity of affluence here. Kooky arrives in the arvo, I offer a found worm. Disinterest. Kooky is sated beyond measure. I look past him to my drying wood stockpile, I’ve fires for the next week. :: Pacific Black Duck ⚭ Some bird names I just don't get and this duck is sort of one of those. The only part I get is Pacific given it's found throughout the SW Pacific. Ok, the duck part is obvious too. I'm losing my argument here it seems. Originally, John Gould named it the Australian Wild Duck. Hello, Mr Gould (and, yes, he gives this the thumbs up in the eating ratings) all of the ducks you found here were arguably Australian and all definitely wild. New Zealanders call them Grey Ducks, which is kinda my point here, where's the grey? So, we called them black ducks. Yeah, look hard and you may find some but, hey, there's alot more black to seen in other birds and black is rarely seen in the name. When I hear black duck I'm thinking Daffy front and centre and colour wise the resemblance is thin. I think it needs a more reasonable name. Any suggestions people? As an aside I use the hashtag duck when posting, you should see how many duck hunters respond but given the spread of pellets you hardly even have to aim so it can't be called hunting. More like slaughtering. :: Pied Currawong ⚭ The Ravens were worried, there was no rain for a long time. All the water had dried up & the Earth sang a song of thirst pleading for water to soothe her parched skin. The Lyrebirds, who got their water from the ground & not from the sky, were kind to the the Ravens & invited them to take as much sweet water as they needed. The Ravens asked why the Lyrebirds were so kind when others had refused to help. The Lyrebird said long ago the Ravens had provided their black feathers to the Black Swans & the water was a repayment of a kin debt. (See a recent Black Swan post for that story.) The Currawongs & The Magpies heard this & called a meeting to discuss how the Ravens had saved them during great cold & how that debt had never been repaid. So they decided that the Currawongs would seek the Cloud Spirits help while the Magpies sang a song to guide them back home. Finally the Currawongs found the Cloud Spirits playing atop a high mountain &asked for their help. The Cloud Spirits said they were having too much fun & refused but one of the Currawongs captured a Cloud Spirit in a net. Despite the grumblings of the Cloud Spirit, the Currawongs could hear the Magpies' song & found their way home. The other Cloud Spirits followed & saw how parched the Earth was so they dropped their rain on the thirsty Earth. The Earth sang a song of happiness & the Ravens danced in the falling rain. :: Australian Brush-turkey ⚭ For those caption readers out there who have also been around this site for a while will know that I am not too particularly fond of one John Gould, the mythical father of Australian birds. He is likely responsible for the most bird deaths of any one individual in our history. It is quite ironic that his name is attached to bird preservation societies that have since morphed into Australia's foremost bird organisation. Apart from having birds shot and /or otherwise collected in vast numbers for ornithogical reasons, he also wasn't shy of having them shot for culinary purposes. He was also particularly fond of all parrot pies which he 'would never turn down'. In his major work the Birds of Australia he notes the relative ease with which these turkeys could be shot and lamented that 'unless some measures be adopted for their preservation, this circumstance must lead to an early extinction of the race; an event much to be regretted, since, independently of its being an interesting bird for the aviary, its flesh is extremely delicate, tender, and juicy'. I guess turkey is just turkey. The birds have survived the onslaught especially in the 1930's when they were considered to soon be an extinct species. The are thankfully common again. :: Spotted Pardalote ⚭ Another one of those birds whose name hasn't been well thought out. The word pardalote comes from the Greek meaning, have a wild guess. Spotted! Yep, that's right they named this bird the spotted spotted one. Huh? Talk about redundant tautology. But it gets sillier, there's a Striated Pardalote and if you're still guessing right you're thinking marked with long, thin parallel streaks. So, it's a stripey spotted bird with no spots. ~ Australian Brush-turkey ~ . So, my husband and I got to spend this week on holiday in our caravan in the lovely seaside town of Yeppoon in Queensland. The local National Park at Byfield is a relatively short drive from Yeppoon (a very nice drive through the countryside at that) so of course a visit was a must. Whilst there were plenty of birds around, sadly there weren't too many that wanted their photo taken, except for this prehistoric looking beauty. Isn't he/she fabulous?! . I always see these birds whenever I'm in the bush or rainforest but have never taken a photo of one but as soon as I saw this one digging around in the dirt in amongst the shadows and every now and then popping into the light to see what was going on, I knew it was going to be a great photo opp...even managed another little winged critter in the frame as well, a mosquito. :: Purple Swamphen ⚭ Striding, with feet too big (clearly not shown here but ridiculous nonetheless) like a miniature tyrannosaurus across wetlands and bullrushes, with a purple too purple and and a beak too red (although battered in this guy), how could these ever be called a "common" bird. In New Zealand they are known as the Pukeko and are mentioned in the Māori myth of how the Kiwi bird lost its wings wherein several birds are asked to save the forest from grubs and bugs and insects by coming down from the trees to eat them. Except for the Kiwi, whose price was to give up its colours and wings, the other birds refused. In the Pukeko's case the excuse proffered up was that it looked too damp down there and it didn't want to get it's feet wet. As punishment for its reluctance to help save the forest the Pukeko was banished for a life forever in the swamp. White-faced Heron :: I get to use two of my favourite words in todays post, pick which ones. So yesterday afternoon was another opportunity to to take the new lens for a spin. As a few non-swearing friends of mine say, 'oh,my word'. I know what they really mean to say and I'm saying it. After having slayed several hundred wrens with the lens I thought it was time to leave but a sidetrack beckoned me to the waters edge of a mangrove inlet where I got distracted by a Darter poking its head out of the water 'periscope up' style. Having failed to nail the mini Loch Ness monster I turned around to leave again and in the heavy shadows was this White-faced Heron seemingly oblivious of me. I knew the stars were aligned cause as I lay down on the rocks my body seemed to fit their contours and it was like a mattress from heaven and such a serendipitous moment was met a lens in a most felicitous way. The VR, hand holding 500mm at 1/100th seems to works to. Spotted Turtle-Dove :: It's there in my book of Australian birds although it's introduced and thus a feral. It was originally released in Melbourne around the 1860's and in Adelaide in 1881 as part of a British naturalisation programme that, as we know, extended itself far beyond birds. Feeding predominantly on grains and seeds in man-made environments along the coastline from Adelaide to far north Queensland and with a released population in Perth, some quite enjoy the scarce food supplies of central Australia and have been highly successful in displacing the Peaceful Dove. This has led one entrepreneurial central Australian to address and amend this situation by catching them in his backyard at rate of nearly 10/month. Being one committed to a mentality of waste-not, want-not he recommends baking them with a flavoursome stuffing topped with a fruit glaze. Gamier than chicken but less so than quail it is apparently 'finger-lickin' good'. First roll them in flour and panfry the whole bird, fill with a well seasoned stuffing and bake for 30 mins at 180 degrees. His signature dish calls for a quandong glaze, but any fruit glaze of choice will do. A glaze with alcoholic notes is highly recommended by Maggie Beer. Australian Brush-turkey. They are the most ancient member of a family that dates back 30 million years and includes chickens, quails, peacocks and pheasants. Their nesting behaviour is equally ancient and primitive. Simply dumping the eggs in a mound and abandoning them.
