CRESTED PIGEONS. This pair of Crested Pigeons ( Ocyphaps lophotes) have made the local area their territory. They are fed enough to keep them interested but not enough to make them dependent. They are a ground feeding bird and can often be seen picking seeds or small insects from the local lawns. They fly with a distinct whistle of wings, indispersing rapid flaps with long glides. Crested pigeon in full borb mode. Big fan of cresties. Love the soft pinks and purples, love their painted wings, love their flying whistles. And, of course, big fan of the crest. I often wonder how to deal with angles on photos like this. The pigeon was sitting at a lean on a little mound; the image reflects reality. Does it look a little odd though? Should I 'correct' it to a viewer's expectation that the ground should be flat and the bird upright (not totally possible here in any case). I liked the angle when I found it/shot it, but looking at it disconnected from that context I'm now not sure. I never really thought of Geoff as a Crested Pigeon before, but when I was watching the male crested pigeon perform a courtship display, I was reminded of when Geoff and I were courting a couple of decades ago. We were wandering around Sydney, talking, walking, connecting with each other and our city, when we came across a vibrant salsa festival. Neither of us are flash dancers, but we took to the rhythms like ducks to water, so to speak. With a licence to jazz, the salsa rhythms were in Geoff’s soul. Bobbing and moving to the syncopation of the off beat. Looking back on it, Geoff’s salsa dancing could be seen as similar, but not exactly like, male crested pigeons performing a courtship display to attract the female; bobbing his body up and down while opening and closing his wings (I mean arms) like a fan with each bob, accompanied by a soft hooting which is timed with the bobbing. I wonder if Crested Pigeons were salsa dancers in their past lives.
