DONA Members - Share Your Knowledge! The 2024 Membership Seminar Series is open for proposals. These seminars are virtual presentations by DONA International members for DONA International members with a focus on topics pertaining to our population of birth, postpartum, and community-centered doulas. Seminars are held monthly March through September, and recordings will be available to registrants. DONA is looking for skill-based topics that are informational, solution-focused, and engaging for participants. Ideal seminars will help doulas understand their clients' needs, perform their work better, and/or enhance their doula practice. These seminars should also have focus on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and intersectionality. Presentations should be 45 or 75 minutes in length, and are followed by a 15-minute Q&A period. When I called my Doula, and told her I was having to be induced that same day, she told me she couldn’t come. She was at another mama’s birth at the same time. I was nervous — because, my birth plan included having a Doula to help support my laboring. I hadn’t considered this scenario that she couldn’t come, and I had never met her backup. However, God knew her. Sanyika’s mentee and backup Doula, Chaka, she blessed my family. She showed up to be by my side as I labored. Surrender is something I live by. Being in the practice of surrender allowed me to let someone I had never met be there for me, even when it wasn’t my original plan. As soon as Chaka walked into the room, I knew I was in good hands. My mom felt it too, and to this day says, “she has a beautiful spirit.” Chaka helped coach me, my husband and my mom through my labor. She assisted the hospital staff, and with all of their support, I labored un-medicated up until the final hours before my c-section. Chaka getting to meet Jace was such a full circle & beautiful moment. He went to her, and let her hold and love on him. The same way she did for Mommy when I needed it most. #BlackDoulasMatter Support Black birth workers. I’m so glad I had the support I had through labor — and after. Part 3 My experience was traumatic and disappointing. 💔I wish I’d taken a quality childbirth education course. 💔I WISH I HAD A DOULA. 💔I wish someone had taught me spinning babies during my second trimester. 💔I wish I had someone to assess my body for alignment and soft tissue issues that could create labor stalls because I NEVER learned this in my pelvic floor therapy training. 💔I wish there was someone to hold my hair back as I puked from the hormones and tell me that I’m strong and powerful. 💔I wish my husband was given tools to support me and that he felt empowered too during my birth. We felt helpless. My desires for myself made me the birth worker and PT I am today because the way I birthed was BS. Don’t be confused. Cesarean birth ISN’T BAD!!! 💗It’s a moment for kick ass moms to take charge and make a decision for themselves and their babies. 💗It’s a moment in birth where moms can feel super powerful! That wasn’t given to me. It was decided for me without full counseling regarding options. Nobody gave me choices. I now make it my business to make sure the moms who birth with me feel empowered and comfortable with the decision to pivot to cesarean birth. It took me a while to learn how to do this, but I’m so thankful I did. Through @spinningbabies @bodyreadymethod and my training as a childbirth educator, I have truly learned how to create intimacy during birth and I make sure my mamas and their partners know their options BEFORE we get to the hospital. I also have made it my business to train DADS!!!!! Cesarean birth is a beautiful tool and mamas who birth this way are incredible. It’s my mission to improve birth on earth. This family is far from being strangers to the Powerhouse family! Today we welcomed baby Lennox to the hive, 2 years and 25 days days after his brother Hendrix. Some of you might recall a post I shared a week ago about a client advocating to have her induction moved to allow her body more time. This mama’s water broke spontaneously on the morning of her scheduled induction. She’d been adamant about having an unmedicated VBAC. A VBAC is a Vaginal Birth After a Cesarean. Of course we discussed all the possibilities but mostly focused on what she wanted to manifest. This mama was absolutely successful in not only achieving her desired VBAC, but she did it without medication. A vaginal birth, unmedicated is a challenge, a VBAC is a challenge, but to witness and support an unmedicated, VBAC I was in awe of her strength. Yes, there were moments she doubted herself, changed her mind, and laughed in response to her overwhelm but she did what she set out to do. Her partner honored and encouraged her at every turn. Ingredients: • 2 tablespoons of dried nettle leaves: Nettle is rich in vitamins and minerals like iron, which can support blood replenishment after childbirth or miscarriage. • 1 tablespoon of dried raspberry leaf: Raspberry leaf is believed to strengthen and tone the uterus, which may aid in postpartum recovery and potentially support miscarriage recovery. • 1 tablespoon of dried oatstraw: Oatstraw is high in nutrients like calcium and magnesium, which can help support overall health and recovery. • 1 tablespoon of dried chamomile flowers: Chamomile has calming properties and may help relieve stress and anxiety, which can be beneficial during the postpartum period or after a miscarriage. • 1 tablespoon of dried lemon balm leaves: Lemon balm is known for its soothing properties and may help support emotional well-being during this sensitive time. • 4 cups of water Instructions: 1. In a pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. 2. Once boiling, add all the dried herbs to the pot. 3. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the herbs simmer for 15-20 minutes. 4. Remove the pot from the heat and let the tonic cool for a few minutes. 5. Strain the herbs from the liquid using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. 6. Pour the tonic into a clean glass jar or pitcher and store it in the refrigerator. 7. 🐝 Long post I don’t think it could ever be stressed enough, how vital doulas are in birth work. Each birth has its own story but the births in that particular week were very complex. **Placental abruption occurs when the placenta begins to detach itself from the wall of the uterus. ** While helping this mama reposition I began to notice some things I was uncomfortable with. Her contractions were great but she was feeling pain where she shouldn’t be, baby’s HR was up and down, change wasn’t being made, and I was concerned about her bleeding. I knew what I was seeing and smelling, which was blood coming from the placenta. It was darker than it should’ve been at that stage in labor and the smell wasn’t giving “bloody show”, it was giving “after birth.” I immediately had the nurse call for the doctor and I began preparing the family for a c-section conversation. By the time I was finished the doctor was standing behind me and said, “I don’t have anything to add to what you just said. You explained it perfectly.” ……… After the surgery was over, the doctor came back in and asked me how I knew what I was looking at so quickly, especially since I couldn’t do a cervix check to feel what he and the nurse felt. I told him it was because I handle placentas often after birth and it smells different. He told us if it had been 10 more minutes, it would have become a life or death situation because the placenta had begun detaching from the wall. This birth and the beginning of their postpartum journey came with challenges but I’m glad to say they’ve been recovering well.
