The Blarney Castle was quite the experience! First you have to climb over 100 narrow steps to get to the top to kiss the stone! Which was our least favorite part, because those steps were wild! It was also rainy so the steps weren’t just narrow, they were also slippery! The view up top was amazing tho, and we are glad we got to experience it, but definitely wouldn’t do it again 💀😅 Have you been before? Had to swing by the Blarney Castle since I was in Cork. What blows my mind about the castle is the fact that it’s been standing since the 1400s! The Blarney Stone itself was interesting. I didn’t realize that the only way to kiss the limestone slab was to lay on your back and tilt your head far back in order to reach it. They had gentlemen at the top that helped hold you down. Legend has it that kissing the stone will gift the kisser the gift of eloquence. I’m still waiting for the gift to arrive 💁🏽♀️. Apparently the powers of the stone were granted by a witch? Considering they an entire poison garden on the grounds that makes complete sense to me. Other parts of the garden definitely gave off that ‘witch that lives in a cabin in the middle of the woods’ vibe. Steph started the day with a workout at CrossFit Navatis in downtown Dublin. We drove a couple hours to the Cashel and had a spot of breakfast at 64 degree Coffee Bar (Irish sausage rolls and coffee) before taking a guided tour of the Rock of Cashel. It was amazing. We drove up a mountain about half a hour away (through the back country roads) to a viewpoint of the Glen of Aherlow - stunning! Drove another nearly 90 mins to Blarney! This has been our favorite castle so far!! Climbing up a sprial staircase to kiss the Blarney Stone has been a highlight of this trip so far. Blarney Castle, County Cork, Republic of Ireland. Painted by Matthew. One year ago I painted my first location, Blarney Castle, so it seemed about time so I did it again to check my progress. I also noticed I had missed a spot, which was now been corrected. Blarney Castle stands in one of Ireland’s most picturesque regions. The current keep and castle are fast approaching their 600th birthday, having been completed in 1446, but were erected atop the remains of two even older fortresses, a stone one from 1209 and a wooden one from the 900s. It has changed hands many times, originally built by MacCarthy’s of Muskerry, and is now privately owned by Sir Charles Colthurst. It is open to, and very popular with, the public. Blarney Castle is not short of unique features, including a poison garden! Here you can find toxic flora such as wolfsbane and mandrake, and even narcotics such as cannabis and opium poppies! There are several walking trails, which lead to natural rock formations with fairytale names, like the Druid’s Circle and the Wishing Steps. And why not? This is the land of the fey, after all. The castle is best known for the Blarney Stone. Visitors can hang upside down and backwards from the battlements, over a 90 foot drop, to kiss the stone, which grants them the gift of the gab. ‘Blarney’ translates to “clever, flattering or coaxing talk.” Oh, a fun fact; the stone used to be part of the insides of a toilet! Climbing to the top of #blarneycastle was a great experience with narrow stairs and 25 mile wind at the top after a little weather came through but we were the only people up there to kiss the stone. I do feel much more eloquent. 🤓
