Let me tell you a story. While in primary school, I read different story books. Chike And The River, The Drummer Boy, Eze Goes To School, The Sugar Girl, and so many others. I loved the stories in this books and they helped me, as child, to know the importance of education, respect for elders and friendship. In my intensive English textbook, I read almost all the stories in them. From Junior secondary school to my Senior secondary school. I read so many other story books along the line, even with the stories in the Bible, the story of the Israelites, the story of David, the story of Solomon, the story of Esther, the story of Jobs, the story of Daniel, Jonah, and the prophets and the story of Jesus. In 2020, the question of purpose began to ring strongly in my mind. I wondered why I was created on earth, I imagined what my calling was as a person. These questions kept ringing in my head continuously. During the lockdown, I spent time at my Aunty's place. It during this period that I came across Purpose Driven Life by Pst. Rick Warren. This book helped shape my thought about purpose, and helped me to know that to achieve my purpose, I need to first seek God, and then all other things will be added. I went ahead to read Bridge to Haven by Francine Rivers, You Can Begin Again by Joyce Meyers and half of the New testament, mostly the letters of Paul. During this period, I discovered that Books are Bridges to different things. The Bible is a book that creates a bridge and a connection between us and God. Books written by men create a connection between us and the world we live in. To include other people, cultures and ideas not their own? My advice has been trying graphic novels. Graphic novels are not just for superheros or boys, they now cover a wide range of content and characters, and my kids are here for it! . When Sophia was learning to read, I found that it was often easier for her to follow along while I read graphic novels because the words are literally circled and concise and she was less likely to get overwhelmed. . Yesterday, I had the joy of listening to @jerrycraft and @victoriajamiesonbooks discuss their process when developing a graphic novel. It was a blessing. Today I found Sophia reading "Escape from Syria," for the THIRD time. . Written by @samya_kullab Illustrated by Jackie Roche and Colorist, Mike Freiheit, "Escape from Syria," it is real, raw, and therefore, devasting. The conditions of Syrian refugees as depicted in this story from first hand experience of reporter and author, Samya Kullab, is a story that needed to be told, no matter how difficult it is to read or see. . Although my 6 year old read it, I recommend this for ages 8 and up, unless you are ready, as the guardian, to have the conversations that will naturally arise from reading such a book. I do not shy from heavy content, especially when based in reality. How else can we learn to have compassion for others if we are not willing to hear their story? But that's just me. You do you. For the past week we have been learning about Hanukkah by using books, educational videos (we liked @missmayim video- a great overview) and called our friends in NY to ask them about how they celebrate. And we tried Latkes. π Since my kids only started eating French fries this year (with mixed reviews), the latkes were mostly a conduit for the sour cream and applesauce. But we tried something new and that's what matters to me. . It also matters that my non-denominational Christian children learn about other religions and from those who practice that religion. In speaking with our Jewish friends, they sang us a song, letting my kids hear something new and wonderful. We (of course) also read books (some a bit 'heavy,' some fun) about the Hanukkah experience as mostly seen from the eyes of a child. In learning about the origin of Hanukkah, we also discussed religious oppression & freedom, fighting for what we believe in (and willingness to die for it), assumptions versus facts, and the beauty of the holiday itself. . Sophia desperately wanted to light a hanukkiyah, but I was not prepared for that. Next year. Happy Monday! We hit a record this weekend: three trips to the library in three days. Sophia has discovered the Magic Tree House series thanks to "Ban this Book," by Alan Gratz, and getting 5 of them on Friday was not enough. We got 5 more on Saturday and then this Momma stocked up on Sunday with about 10 more plus 4 YA chapter books to hold her over for the week. I even grabbed 2 for myself. π . Friday's Library Haul yielded more than the intended Hispanic Heritage Month books I was looking for and I'm not mad. π I love that my kids get excited EVERY TIME we go to the library. I had an idea placed on my heart: to have a small online bookstore to help diversify your library. Each month would offer 5 - 10 books for a given theme at a low price with the hope of also offering one or more books from independent authors with the same theme.
