🥳🥳🥳Pub Day Review: Where was Goodbye by @janicelynnmather 🥳🥳🥳 Where was Goodbye is a heartbreaking tale about grief and coping after a tragic death. It is essentially about how a family deals with the aftermath of suicide: the unanswered questions, the perennial “what ifs”, the all-consuming guilt and the constant regrets. Reading this book is not easy, so be mindful of the content warnings (suicide, depression, anxiety). There were a lot of heart-wrenching moments and my eyes were red from crying! I had to pause several times to take a breather. Reading Karmen’s POV was truly insightful. I really felt her pain and anguish. But I must commend the author for doing such an awesome job tackling the difficult issues with much sensitivity. Despite the heavy topics, I would recommend adding this book to your tbr. Mental health issues should be talked about more often and cease to be a taboo. I am really happy we have these kinds of YA novels available nowadays. Thanks @simonschusterca for my complimentary ARC. Until now I am still hung over after reading this thoughtfully-written novel about grief and loss. REAL AMERICANS by Rachel Khong Thank you, @aaknopf @netgalley for the digital advance reader copy. 📖💭my thoughts: I am blown away by this book, and I live for this feeling now – having no expectations going into a book and only to be pleasantly surprised by how gorgeous the writing is. Real Americans is an immersive multi-generational story, and I think it’s best to go in blind for the best reading experience. I enjoyed all three parts of this book and couldn’t pick a favorite because they all have their place in the story. This book will definitely be one of my top reads of the year. It was powerful and insightful. The author evoked so many feelings that I, as a reader and a daughter of immigrant parents, can relate to. Real Americans will take you on a ride of emotions and leave you thinking about it long after you finish it. 5 STARS OUT TODAY (4/30)! read if you enjoy: - family dynamics, inheritance - multigenerational stories - class, race, and visibility - trust and forgiveness

Sometimes, belonging feels elusive. Sometimes, it feels as if we belong, and other times, we don't belong. But here's the thing. Our belonging isn't meant to be transitional or conditional. 📜Buddy Read Book Review📜 Another brilliant work by Kuang. Her knowledge, writing, and critiques of society always enrich my perspective. I’m so glad I finally read this book with the @bookends.friends book club to learn more about etymology, colonialism, and academia oppression. Kuang’s immersive and descriptive prose made me feel like I was walking the bricks of Oxford myself. Her diverse band of linguistic translators from the esteemed Babel tower daily face the micro-aggressions (and blatant racism) of 1830’s British society. This leads the main protagonist, Robin, to eventually join the Hermes Society, a secret organization dedicated to stopping imperial expansion and an unjust war with China over silver and opium. The Hermes Society’s actions turn increasingly violent leading to a takeover of Babel tower and a freeze on the translators crucial silverwork in an attempt to force the government into action. Kuang raises timely debates about revolution (peaceful versus violent), foreign policy, and privilege. Her skill is creating a cast of characters you grow to both love and despise; you cannot help but to be pulled into the angst, hope, despair, grief, and love the characters feel in this read! If Kuang writes it, I will be reading it! All the stars! 📜QOTD: Do you speak any other languages besides English? BOOK REVIEW • The Manicurist’s Daughter by Susan Lieu 💭 What’s your favourite memoir that you’ve read? “Even though we were boat people who came to America in 1983, Ma’s awful death made us refugees a second time in 1996.” tw: grief, death of a parent, body shaming Raised in a Vietnamese household, Lieu’s family wasn’t allowed to speak about her mother’s death. With no closure, Lieu struggled to grieve and for the next 20 years, searched for answers to the cascading questions—what led to her mother’s decision for plastic surgery? What was her mother’s life in Vietnam like? How did this surgeon end up operating on her mother? THE MANICURIST’S DAUGHTER dives deep into the exploration of grief, intergenerational trauma, body image, motherhood, and the weight of inherited family history. Lieu is an amazing storyteller and a stellar writer. There is so much honesty and vulnerability laced between the pages as she shares her grief journey and her mother’s backstory. Fleeing from Vietnam to establishing two nail salons in America to sponsoring and providing for their relatives, Lieu’s mother was a powerhouse of a woman and the glue to her family until the family fell apart when she tragically passed. Losing her mother at such a young age, the loss and absence of her mother and time can be felt deeply through Lieu’s story. My heart ached as she shared about the regret she carried for years, the desire for closure and a yearning for a deeper understanding of her mother. When she learned of the reason for her mother’s decision for plastic surgery, my heart broke. Throughout the memoir, Lieu also vulnerably shares about her own body image—the familial and cultural impact it had on her self-image and her relationship with food. There are many heavy and emotional topics discussed in this book. I appreciate Lieu balancing them out well with her humour but never having it detract from her message. The memoir is packed with Lieu’s heritage and Vietnamese roots—seamlessly incorporating the Vietnamese language, cultures and traditions, and food descriptions into her story. I highly recommend consuming Lieu’s story via audiobook, narrated by the author herself.

“Dalit History Month is an initiative started by a group of young women from the Dalit community, such as Sanghapali Aruna and Thenmozhi Soundararajan, in 2015. It was inspired by Black History Month, but with time and open participation, it has taken a direction of its own. The month celebrates Babasaheb Ambedkar — undoubtedly one of the architects of modern India, who was born in April — but is not limited to that alone. We celebrate various ideals and stalwarts of the community, including Ramabai Ambedkar, social reformer and educationist Savitribai Phule, reformer Jyotiba Phule, activist and writer Babytai Kamble, social reformer Shahuji Maharaj, freedom fighters Birsa Munda and Uda Devi, educator Fatima Sheikh, and many more. It is also a month of mourning for those who lost their loved ones due to caste discrimination and hatred. And, finally, it is about organising and agitating against injustices, giving us a collective hope for a better and more just society. Devoting a month is not enough to compensate for the centuries of theft of our history, but a month is a good beginning towards building bridges of solidarity, dignity and equity. It is a month of celebration, retrospection and agitation, visible to the mainstream for a limited time. It is not to get attention, but to assert our identities and expressions as mainstream.” ~ Siddhesh Gautam, The Hindu Visit our bookstores to get your copies of these essential reads. #dalithistorymonth #dalithistory #dalitliterature #anticaste #readmorebooks #educateagitateorganize #educate #diversebooks #diversereads #indianwriters #indianliterature #books #bookstore #independentbookstore #shoplocalbookstores #odisha #bhubaneswar #cuttack

✨BOOK REVIEW✨ Title: Say You’ll Be Mine Author: @nkumarwrites Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: Romance, Fake Engagement, Arraigned Meeting Review: What a debut novel!! I stayed up way too late reading this and loved every minute. I loved the fake engagement, arraigned marriage tropes in this book. Karthik wants to stop going to arraigned meetings that his mother is making and Meghna can use a date for her ex’s wedding, who she happens to be the best man in. They mutually decide to have a fake engagement and of course start spending time together and getting to know each other. Karthik is very against marriage and partnership as he’s had a bad example growing up and Meghna has had the complete opposite. Some of my favorite parts were Karthik’s description of love when Paul asked and Meghna’s father’s talk on his love for Meghna’s mother. Overall an amazing debut and I can’t wait for her next book! I also can’t wait to meet Naina Kumar at Steamy Lit this year!! Thank you @buffalogirllovesbooks for the recommendation to pick up this book! 💭Are you a fan of matcha or tea lattes? 💬I’ve never been a coffee drinker but I absolutely love matcha and tea lattes. LUPITA’S HURRICANE PALOMITAS is 3 weeks away from release!! With beautiful illustrations from @anaoseynn, the story follows Lupita as she and her family prepare for a hurricane. April was a slower reading month for me. I DNFed a handful of books as well, some because I wasn’t in the mood, others because of disappointment. Those books are not included, obviously. Highlighting a few favs: - Lightningborn has me grabby hands for the whole series. If you like dragons, and want an action-packed story with sky pirates and a very lovable hero, I highly recommend this fun read! - Shubeik Lubeik absolutely deserves more hype! It’s a beautifully illustrated graphic novel told in 3 parts, with a fascinating exploration of “what ifs” when it comes to wish making, set in a robust alternate fantastical Cairo. - The Girl in the Castle is for anyone who enjoys whimsical fantasy. With an underdog heroine, a bumbling wizard with delusions of grandeur, and a kingdom to save, this will surely appeal to fantasy readers of all ages. - In Repair delivers peak Emotional Damage™️, but is such an important story of healing and self acceptance. The diversity representation is so gentle and loving, it’s clear that the author took great care when incorporating it into the story. #bookstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendation #aprilwrapup #fiction #spaceopera #litfic #sciencefiction #fantasy #literaryfiction #youngadult #middlegrade #LBGTQbooks #dragonbooks #BIPOCAuthor #BIPOCbooks #BIPOCStories #BIPOCbookrecs #diversereads #diversebooks #diverseauthors #diversestories

They ask all the questions and I have to deliver. 📚 April reading summary 📚 What a reading month. I feel like I’ve found my rhythm as a reader, knowing what I want to read/finish and what I’m willing to DNF. April started with a high of two 4.5-star reads (Beartown, and Chlorine). I found a new comfort read in Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop. Then there was a middling lull, followed by a candidate for the best book of 2023 (Minor Detail). That put me in a reading slump that I had to fight my way out of. ❤️ 4.5-5 stars: ▫️ Minor Detail by Adania Shibli ▪️ Beartown by Fredrik Backman ▫️ Chlorine by Jade Song ▪️ Sweep of the Heart by Ilona Andrews (re-read) ⭐️ 3.5-4 stars: ▫️ The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang ▪️ Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-Reum ▫️ Chloe and the Kaishao Boys by Mae Coyiuto ✨ 3 stars: ▪️ Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi ▫️ Beautiful Country by Quan Julie Wang ▪️ Against the Loveless World by Susan Abulhawa Less than 3 stars: ▫️ 21 Lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Noah Harari ▪️ My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante . . . . . #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramvietnam #monthlyreadingwrapup #2024readingchallenge #bookrecommendations #fivestarread #diversebooks #diversereads #readasianauthors2024 #20booksbyasianwomen #20booksbyasianauthors #diversespines #diversifybookstagram #bookishflatlay #bookcommunity #readingtime📖 #minordetail #adaniashibli #beartown #fredrikbackman #chlorinenovel #jadesong #ilonaandrews #irischang #chloeandthekaishaoboys #maecoyiuto #againstthelovelessworld #welcometothehyunamdongbookshop #qianjuliewang

[🇬🇧] Hello Booksta! What’s the last romance you loved? Honey and Spice is great as a book, but the exceptional work Weruche Opia put into the audiobook had to count for something, so it made me up my rating on Goodreads/Storygraph! The writing flowed extremely well and was funny, it felt like hearing a story from a friend. The cultural references were top-notch; I felt seen on multiple occasions (the braids getting stuck in your coat, I felt that 😂). I love the way Bolu Babalola explores female friendship. Kiki was hurt in the past and it shaped her view of friendship in college. It felt so good when she got over it and experienced true sisterhood. She also explores how your parents’ relationship can shape your view of romantic relationships, which is interesting. I love the relationship between Kiki and Malakai. Malakai is such a good book boyfriend because he’s genuinely a good person. He’s sweet and caring, but most importantly, he owns up to his mistakes. It’s a dialogue-driven book, and I enjoyed that aspect because it was great at building believable chemistry between Kiki and Malakai and effectively revealing information to understand them as individuals. I also love the fake dating trope, yes even in adult romances (I didn’t know many people have an age limit for this trope), the reason was a bit out there, but it was still fun! I enjoyed the overall plot, but I wasn’t interested in some of the subplots. The third-act breakup came rather late, and its resolution was quick. It should’ve been a good thing, but it appeared even more unnecessary because of that, so I wasn’t a fan. For me, they fell in love a bit too quickly. Them getting into a relationship made perfect sense, but I felt that not enough time had passed for them to be in love with each other. It was a great romance, and I highly recommend the audiobook for an even better reading experience! If you’ve read it, what do you think? If not, would you pick it up? Have a great week ✨ P.S.: Apparently, it will be adapted? I shall be seated!! 🏷️ #Bookstagram #BlackBookstagram #RomanceBooks #BlackRomance #BookReview #RomanceRecs #BlackAuthor #HoneyAndSpice #BoluBabalola #DiverseReads

been binge watching Fallout on Prime. Fallout 4 was one of the main inspiration for the series that How We End is an origin series to. It started off as a post-apocalypse set around 1000 years from now, but when my brother read the first few chapters he asked: how did it get like this? And this is how the seed of How We End was planted. My idea was an origion story to a world vastly different from our own, not even recognisable. Much like Horizon Zero Dawn, and the Fallout games. #dystopianfiction #diversebooks #diversebookstagram #diversifyyourbookshelf #diverseauthors #diversereads #zombiebookauthor #zombiebooks #zombiebookseries #dystopianfiction #bipocbooks #bipocbookstagram #bipocwriters #indiebooks #indieauthor #indiebook

Zoe’s Fiction Book Reviews! (AD/GIFTED) 🌟 Book Details: * Title: Pomegranate & Fig * Author: Zaheda Ghani * ISBN: 9780733647604 * Publisher: Hachette Australia * Pub Date: 01/06/2022 * Genre: Contemporary circa. 1970s 🌟 My third DNF* for the year. For full transparency, there was nothing wrong with the premise or the writing, it just wasn’t drawing me back in after each time I put it down. And with so many stories to read, this is a book I need to shelve for another time. Some of my stats/thoughts: * According to my StoryGraph, across the last two weeks, I’ve picked this book up three times, and I’ve only managed to read 57 pages (20%). I think it is time to call it quits. * As mentioned above, there wasn’t anything inherently wrong with the story. I think it was more a ‘me’ problem, and this book has come at the wrong time. (I’m just too tired from child wrangling to fully immerse myself in this story.) * There were quite a number of things that I was enjoying across the first act of the book. The shifting perspectives between Henna, Hamid and Rahim. Henna’s desire for an education, and her subsequent enrolment and study at a teacher’s college. Rahim’s need to adhere to the traditions and customs of finding a wife. But my concentration levels just weren’t giving this book the chance it deserves. *Did Not Finish 🌟 Thank you @hachetteAUS for gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review. 🌟 🏷️TAGS🏷️ #PomegranteAndFig #ZahedaGhani #HachetteAustralia #AussieReaders #DiverseReads #HonestBookReview #OwnVoices

Witches by Brenda Lozano 📘General Fiction 📘 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ /5 This novel chronicles violence against women (and those who present as women) in Mexico. An important topic without a doubt, yet I struggled to get into the story. The writing style is poetically unique, but I did not like the translation because it took too much away from the heart of the story. I might read this book in the future if I can get a Spanish copy. #GoodReads #bestreads #Fiction #DiverseReads #BookLover #2024reads #2024 books #latinaBookstagrammer #bookstagram #witches

Book Review: Ex Appeal by Cathy Yardley ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Summary: A hacker and a fixer—who just happen to be high school exes—reunite to help each other out in this witty second-chance romance. This is the third book in the Ponto Beach Reunion interconnected series, and it was so much fun to be back in this story world. I am apparently on bit of a “second-chance” romance kick at the moment is this is my second in a row. This book was so delightful and the chemistry between Emily and Vinh is palpable from the start and it’s impossible to not root for them to get back together. I hope there are more Ponto Beach books in the future as I’m not quite ready to leave this friend group behind just yet. Their joint dating advice column must be good enough to win and secure bragging rights within her small Taiwanese American community, where her family’s reputation has been in the pits since her older sister was disowned a few years prior. Juliana always thought prestige mattered above all else. But as she argues with Garrett over how to best solve everyone else’s love problems and faces failure for the first time, she starts to see fractures in this privileged, sheltered worldview. With the competition heating up, Juliana must reckon with the sacrifices she’s made to be a perfect daughter—and whether winning is something she even wants anymore. Day 162: <> Today was an amazing day!! I wrapped up School Library Month with the "Flying Out Of School Library Month" culminating activity. The kids had a ball and had a chance to be actual kids 🤗. There weren't any behavior issues, and there were smiles all around. The kids had a chance to fly kites, throw frisbees, and blow bubbles (things that fly 🤷🏾‍♀️😅). This is an event that I look forward to every year, and this year was no different. My heart ❤️ was full at the end of the day, and baby, I was also WORE out babyyyyyyyyy by the end of the day. 🍋Tell me about your day in the comments Want easy to follow steps to diversify your library collection? 🙋‍♀️🙋🏽🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏽‍♂️🙋 Click the link in my bio [I do not own the rights to the music in slides] #180daysinthelifeofamediaspecialist #NewMediaSpecialist #librariesofinstagram #library #librarylife #changeiscoming #bookstagram #librarylove  #blackteensread #librariesrock #librariestransform #schoollibrary #schoollibrarian #librariansofinstagram #schoollibraries  #instalibrary #teacherlibrarian #lovelibraries #librariesareforeveryone  #educator #booksofinstagram #blacklibrarian  #teacherlibrarian #mediacenter #mediaspecialistsofinstagram #diversecollections #diversity #diversereads #highschoollibray #librarygram #bookstagrammer

Do you always read the synopsis of a book before you start it? I had heard great things about the poetically written young adult novel Clap When You Land, so I just decided to dive right in. And was I ever confused! It would have been helpful to get a little background before starting this one. Plot - Camino Rios is a teenager living in the Dominican Republic, dreaming of going to college in NYC and anxiously awaiting the arrival of her dad, who visits every summer. When she gets to the airport, however, she finds out that the plane he was on crashed over the Atlantic. Yahaira Rios is a teenager in NYC who is called into the principal’s office and told her beloved dad died in a plane crash on his way to the Dominican Republic. In one devastating moment, both girls find their lives forever altered not just by his death, but also when his long held secrets come out and they find out about each other. Clap When You Land obviously deals with very heavy topics, but it was written with grace and sensitivity in its verses. It did take me a while to get into the style of writing, but once I did, I flew through the story and anxiously wondered about the future of the two sisters. It was heartbreaking, it was touching, it was wonderful. Even though it looks like an (intimidating) chunky book, it was a quick ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 read. - B

Diversifying your collection: 💡 Book Spotlight💡- The Sticky Note Manifesto of Aisha Agarwal written by Ambika Vohra @ambiwritesbooks 📖Romance "How have you gotten out of your comfort zone?" That’s the Stanford admissions prompt that valedictorian shoo-in Aisha Agarwal can’t answer. Her life’s been homework and junk food. So, when her crush, Brian, asks her to winter formal, Aisha thinks her fate is changing . . . . . . until Brian stands her up. As if on cue, a banged-up Volkswagen arrives outside the dance; the driver profusely apologizing for being late to pick her up. Does Aisha know him or what he's talking about? No. Does the Stanford essay convince her to take him up on the ride? Absolutely. To Aisha’s relief, seventeen-year-old Quentin Santos isn’t a kidnapper, but he is failing math. They strike a deal: if Aisha helps Quentin pass math, he’ll help push her out of her comfort zone, using a series of sticky note to-do’s—dares—that will not only give Aisha content for her essay, but will turn her into the confident person she’s always wanted to be. From New Year’s Eve kisses to high school parties, Aisha’s sticky note manifesto is taking off. But when she falls for the wrong guy, hurts her best friend, and still can’t finish her essay, victory feels far from reach. Is winning worth it if you end up losing yourself in the process? This is Ambika Vohra's heartfelt and hilarious debut novel, for fans of Netflix's Never Have I Ever and Jenny Han. ❤️🧵 MANGA MONDAY 🧵❤️ Happy Monday, y'all! Any plans for your week? Last week absolutely drained me, so gonna try to take it easy this week and recuperate. I also have a few books I wanna finish up before the end of the month. 🤞 I just started reading this manga series, The Red Thread by LazySheep & Hibiku Haruyama. It's only two volumes in English so far and I read the first volume yesterday. Not sure how to feel yet, but I do plan to keep reading! I'm generally a bit iffy on the whole past lives & "fated to be together" premise, but I must admit I am intrigued. I found the dialogue a bit unnatural at times (not sure if that's a translation or adaptation issue or...), but I do like the characters so far. Major TW for depictions of suicide, btw. Kinda threw me off, tbh. The art style is very cutesy, but the subject matter is very heavy at times. Hope y'all have a safe and restful week! 🥰 • 🤎 • 🤎 • 🤎 • Photo Description: Vol. 1 and 2 of the Red Thread standing upright together against a blue lantern and dried hydrangeas. 🍂 📚 🍂 📚 🍂 #MangaMonday #Manga #BLmanga #LGBTQ #Queer #QueerLit #QueerBooks #QueerBooksta #DiverseReads #WeNeedDiverseBooks #BookRecs #Bookstagram #Booksta #BookPhotography #Raw_Books #BooksAreMagic #BookLover #BookNerd #BookWorm #ReadMoreBooks #WhatIRead #ReadingLife #ReadingTime #Bookish #BookishLife #BookishCanadians #CozyVibes

A belated @enhypen birthday concert last night!! WOW this group puts on one hell of a show! And let me tell you… the absolutely ear piercing screech I let out when they started singing What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction??! (Please forgive the abysmal camera quality… I was too busy losing my mind to stay still) I fear this is the closest I may ever come to seeing 1D live, but I also kinda feel like I can die happy now. 😭🫶🏻 (The accessibility at the Tacoma Dome is pretty terrible… but other than that, it was an unforgettably amazing experience! ✨)

Back to danmei today! Got my copy of The Husky and His White Cat Shizun vol 5 early, and was really excited to read this. The first part of the arc deals with the suspicious love triangle of Nangong Si, Song Qiutong and Ye Wanxi. I honestly didn't expect all the twists and turns in the story! The middle part was actually insane! Don't want to go into spoilers, but damn! I really didn't see most of these twists coming. 😳 The focus goes back to Mo Ran and Chu Wanning in the last third of the book. They have some incredibly tender and sweet scenes 😭❤️ like seriously, the one at the end has become one of my favourites (if you read it, you know 🌙💕) . Now of course, I'm worried about what's to come 😭 because you know in 2ha a happy scene is followed by a ton of angst!

Ashton Lattimore did an outstanding job on her debut novelAll We Were Promised.  Set in 1837 Philadelphia, this story chronicles the lives of three women, Charlotte, Nell, and Evie who are all on a mission to get what they are promised by the world.  The right to live in this land and be truly free.  All We Were Promised, revolves around resilience, friendship, and the ultimate sacrifice. This story was a thought-provoking masterpiece. There were times I had empathy for the characters, laughed with them and felt their sorrow.  I could see another book about Nell, Charlotte and Evie’s abolitionist work because Nell was too determined to do more than have meetings and talk about the issues.   The story builds slowly from the beginning to middle and then begins to pick up.  I didn’t mind because there was so much to take in from beginning to end.  The true historical references were weaved into the story perfectly and caused me to do a lot of research of my own.  For instance, the burning of Pennsylvania Hall, the Grimké sisters, Robert Bogle, Hetty Reckless and Robert Purvis.  Please read the authors note.  She provides more facts that show how she tied the true history into the story.  I am looking forward to Ms. Lattimore’s next book.  ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Written by: @ashtonlattimore Narrated by: Shayna Small . . . #booktrend #bookcommunity #currentreads #bookstagram #bookworm #blackauthors #bibliophile #diversereads #bookblogger #monthlygoals #booklover #bookclub #booktok #currentlyreading #booktok #blackbookstagram #2024readingchallenge #april2024 #bookworm #bookgoals #AshtonLattimore #AllWeWerePromised #ShaynaSmall #historicalfiction #slavery #blackauthors #blacknarrators #blackwomenauthor #abolitionist @prhaudio @penguinrandomhouse

🎶 The Kiss Countdown Playlist 🎧 This book is the current reason for my month long book hangover. 😩 It was so good that it actually inspired me to make a playlist as I was reading. I always say I’m gonna make one but this is the first time I did. Ahhh this book gave me all of the vibes so it deserved its own soundtrack.✨ When will I post my actual review? Chiiile when I get a chance to record it first. 😬 Life has been a little crazy. What’s the last song that you had on repeat?

✨Second Chance Authors✨ Do you give an author a second chance if you did not enjoy their first book? It’s no secret that I was less than impressed by Open Water. I was so excited to read the book when it was released in 2021 as the premise sold itself; a Black male Londoner navigating love and mental health. What’s not to love?! However, the execution of the storyline, in particular the writing style and second point of view narrative, were not for me. Fast forward three years later and I am in possession of the author’s second book. Small Worlds has been described as an intimate and powerful exploration of a father-son relationship, music and searching for belonging. Once again, the synopsis is selling itself, and I will be giving this author another shot. Would you do the same if you didn’t enjoy the author’s first book? Have you read Open Water or Small Worlds? So tell me, do you give authors another chance if you did not enjoy the first book you read by them?

The Fire Next Time By: James Baldwin Publish Date: 1963 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ‘I’m a writer. I like doing things alone.”- Baldwin, The Fire Next Time. This book is two essays which James wrote. The first one to his nephew, James, and the second one talking about the world around him and the people he met. I seen some people mention this was an memoir but that’s far off. Essay is a perfect name for it. But once again, James has done it again. He is constantly reminding me why he is my inspiration and why he is my favorite writer. After reading Malcom X’s book, Elijah Muhammad is someone who seems really sneaky. The way he and his people judged James for deciding not to follow any religious group. Ever too often, society tries to tell us that we need to be apart of something to be considered someone. But James defied that and that is what I loved. I would recommend this book once again. It’s an easy read and the words bled out so beautifully on the paper.

Happy Monday, friends! 🌻 April seems like it's been so slow but also so quick, idk. Anyways look at me be really on the ball for my ✨April WRAP UP! ✨ even though there's still 1 more day to finish up/get in any last reads! I actually just finished The Catch faster than I thought so not sure if I'll squeak in one last book before the end of the month... 📚 Bookshops and Bonedust by Travis Baldree 3★ 🧧 Four Aunties and a Wedding by Jesse Q Sutanto 3★ 📽️ How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang 3★ 🍹Funny Story by Emily Henry 4 (.5?)★ 🐟The Catch by Amy Lea 3★ ✨ qotd | how's your April reading? What was your favourite or least favourite read? Mini thoughts on the above books; I read Bookshops and Bonedust on the tail end of my March Bookshop slice of life train and it was pretty cute. f Four Aunties and a Wedding surprising didn't annoy me as much as book 1. I get why people would love How to End a Love Story, but this was also a good reminder to myself that I still don't care that much for melodramas. Funny Story hit the spot for the fake dating trope. I powered through it and it gave that nice book hangover feel. Was still in fake dating trope mood so I picked up the Catch, probably my favourite of the series so far. 🎶THE NOTES by Catherine Con Morse🎶 Claire attends a performing arts boarding school that is well renowned for turning out proteges. She is worried that she doesn't have what it takes so when a glamorous new piano teacher show up, Claire wants to impress her. Dr. Li is everything Claire wants to be and her fascination with her starts to improve her performance. But then she starts feeling the pressure of perfection and mysterious notes that are highly personal start appearing. Claire begins to wonder is it all really worth it? Ok so it's weird but I love stories set in boarding school. I never went to one but there's something about the isolation and forced community with teenagers that makes it appealing. So I was thrilled to see that this was the setting for the story. It's overall a relatable coming of age story and for readers who want more contemporary realistic stories without romance as a main focus, this is for you. I very much appreciated the underlying thread of identity and not feeling like you belong because I know how much teens go through that. Heck even as an adult, I STILL go through that. The whole feeling like you're not Asian enough because you didn't grow up in a traditional Asian household is super familiar to me as well. I honestly had no idea who was writing the notes and I actually had several suspects in mind. I was actually pretty pleased that I guessed WRONG because I enjoy having twists. This is author's debut novel and it's a stellar one. I can't wait to read more from her in the future! Made a stop at the Kansas City Local Author book fair today after hearing about it from the absolutely lovely @mschambersauthor and got to see her, meet @authorellesparrow (which made M's little heart happy as she is dipping toes into dark romance herself), and picked up a few new books including a very intriguing set of stories by A.L Davidson which retell fairytales like Beauty and the Beast, Rapunzel, and Sleeping Beauty in a Sci Fi, heisty way that we can't wait to bite into. SQUIRE This graphic novel has been on my immediate adjacent TBR for a long time and I’m glad I finally got to it for #ArabAmericanHeritageMonth. It’s also a perfect example of a good book turned great by the authors’ notes. (Swipe to read part of Nadia’s note). On the surface, SQUIRE is about a fantastical journey for Aiza - how she dreams of leaving her second class life for a heroic one. When she enlists in the Empire’s army and leaves her recently colonized people, she learns much about herself and the Empire and will eventually have to choose between herself and her people and the Empire. Like I said, on the surface it’s about loyalty, family, friendships and doing *what’s right.* If you read the authors’ notes, however, you peel back a few layers. Yes they wanted to write a fantasy novel but one with Brown characters - depicting their Arab roots. And they wanted to make sure the characters weren’t the savage, barbarians that they are usually cast as. They wanted to tell a heroic story staring and reflecting Arab people so that fiction and history can reflect the journey of people finding their way. I highly recommend and, as always, I recommend reading the authors’ notes.🖤

How was your reading in Q1? OR What has been your favourite diverse read this year? I've definitely had some new favourites this year, though I know some of these books won't be for everyone. I feel like diverse books are finding their rhythm in Western media. How a story is told in China will differ greatly from Canada or LatAm (etc.). We're used to a certain way of telling stories and so when things break that mold, it can be jarring or uncomfortable. It's been interesting getting some of that differentiation this year and I'm excited to see what the next quarter holds! In 8th grade, we teach a very important unit at the end of the year focusing on literature and stories about the Holocaust. It includes books like Maus, The Boy in Striped Pajamas, The Diary of Anne Frank, Night, and my favorite, the Book Thief. Each time I teach this unit, I learn something new, and one way I try to educate myself is to read more novels about the Jewish experience in the diaspora. The Postcard is a type of book that got better and better as I became more engrossed in the story, and finding out that it is a true story based on the author’s real family was quite the chef’s kiss at the end. It is about a postcard that shows up at a family’s house with four names of their ancestors who died in the Holocaust. The main character is a writer (and apparently an investigative reporter as well) and works with her mom to uncover the mystery behind the postcard. The story is fascinating, and I cannot emphasize how exceptionally unique this story is. It is not just a story about how communities lost their lives in the Holocaust, but how active the resistance was against the Nazi’s. This story is really for those who love nonfiction that reads like narrative fiction. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 stars

Finally decided to post this drawing of Rylo after 4-5 hours of hard dedicated work LOLL! It was my first time doing digital art where I didn't have to sketch anything! I'll definetly be trying this again! Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy. (Psalm 96:11-12) 🤍🌳 #pocartist #art #digitalart #pocart #artistsoninstagram #christianartist #christianbookstagram #wattpadbook #wattpadcharacter #wattpadart #afroindigenousart #indigenousart #indigenouscharacters #indigenouscharacterart #blackcharacters #blackcharacterart #diverseart #diversebooks #diversereads #diversestories #wattpadart #wattpadartist #characterart #digitalart #digitalpainting #christianart #christianbooks #christianbookstagram #poccharacters #poccharacter #poccharacterart I Do not steal, use, or repost my art without consent.
