During my recent visit to Boston’s spectacular Museum of Fine Arts, made possible by my friends Sally Edmonds and her daughter Holly, the fate of a 1907 Cecilia Beaux portrait of our neighbor Charles Bird and his sister Edith, which I discussed with him well over 50 years ago, was affirmed. Charles and his wife Julia Appleton Bird were among the first neighbors I called on when I ran for the Great and General Court in the early 1970’s, that visit encouraged by my mentor Julia Appleton Meyer whose family house my parents purchased. The Bird’s daughter was a friend of my Mother. To this day the Bird’s house is my favorite. Summer days there were idyllic. My portrait of Giorgia, painted from life, sight size at the @sarumstudio . A wonderful light set up here giving me more inspiration for my own studio! I first used sight size when I trained with Charles Cecil. We step far back to see the general effect of light on the model instead of getting caught up in endless unnecessary detail which do not contribute to the effect as a whole. This way of seeing enables you to capture a likeness at the scale of life, entirely from life and it is not simply a matter of copying - you are constantly selecting, and deciding what to loose and what to focus on. Your eye when looking at a subject does not have the capacity to focus on every part- therefore the painting should follow the way the eye works, loosing areas that are not in focus and sharpening areas of focus. Thank you Charles Cecil for passing down this tradition which has been used for centuries by artists such as Sir Joshua Reynolds, John Singer Sargent and Philip De Laszlo. #portraitfromlife

30 April 2024 ABBOTT FULLER GRAVES (American 1859-1936) Courtyard Doorway, New Orleans oil on board 9 x 9 inches Provenance: Private collection, Maine, since 2001 Tom Veilleux Gallery, Maine Available NB. Massachusetts artist Abbott Fuller Graves studied in Paris and Munich, where he traveled and worked together with his friend Edmund Tarbell. Tarbell would become a highly influential teacher and one of the principals in creating a style which would become known as The Boston School. In Europe, Graves studied still life painting, eventually in Paris at the Academie Julian. Back in New England, a large part of his work depicted the lush and flower filled gardens around him, as well as scenes including women of leisure enjoying those gardens. He maintained a studio in New York, and also purchased a home in Kennebunkport, Maine. He was a member of numerous art associations, including the Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists of America, National Arts Club, Copley Society, and the Boston Art Club. Graves won numerous awards and prizes in exhibitions, and received four solo shows of his work at Vose Galleries in Boston. 🛻 Where else can you get french fries, cupcakes, lollipops, apples, and hot ice cream? Only at Brimmer's annual PreK Food Truck Fest! PreK students celebrated the conclusion of their transportation and community helper's unit with the fourth annual Food Truck Fest! In collaboration with the Lower School Creative Arts Department, students explored the importance of food trucks in supporting communities. Here's how it all came together... ➡️ In music and drama classes, students designed and named their trucks, learned the Food Truck Fest song, perfected their script, and even passed their "driving test." ➡️ In art class, students created chef hats to bring their costumes to life. ➡️ Finally, in the classroom, students worked on building their food trucks, creating their license plates, finalizing and writing their menus (viewed via QR code!), and setting reasonable (and astronomical!) prices. Almost over 30 yrs ago the director of the Robert Mapplethorpe foundation said, that potentially I and nan Golden were going to be interviewed for the rag "interview magazine" that never materialized. Another time Robert Samuels from " The Robert Samuels gallery" in NYC who was representing me at the time asked me to have dinner at the then fashionable restaurant Elaine's where coincidentally we ran into Andy Warhol who created Interview magazine. Sam who knew Andy sat and we all talked a bit. I just sorta sat there a in awe not so much that Andy was so famous but more so because he was asking me the strangest questions.....ex: wow, you have beautiful hair and your cheek bones are amazing.Did you have them done here in New York? #FeaturedFriday Our Grade 3 French Plays! 🇫🇷 Grade 3 performed their French Plays today for families, faculty, and fellow students. A collaborative project between the Lower School Creative Arts Team and the World Languages Department, these plays are a great example of Brimmer's interdisciplinary curriculum. Here's just a glimpse of how it all comes together... 🎵 Music Classes: It's a tradition to end these plays with a sing-a-long of the folk song "Vive La Compagnie." In their general music classes, students learned, rehearsed, and added choreography to the traditional folk song to perform at the show's end. 🎨 Art Classes: In March, our young artists began a sketch of the character they would portray on stage, and these sketches were used in the play program. Students also collaborated on the set design and props to bring the play to life! 🎭 Drama Classes: In January, the children contributed ideas for the scripts through various improvisation activities. Once the script was written, the students helped cast the play and spent several weeks learning the play in English and then in French. 🇫🇷 French Classes: Starting in January, third-graders used the BookCreator App on their iPad to write, record, and learn their lines in French. With Haiti's countryside as the backdrop, our students were introduced to the rich tapestry of Haitian culture, music, landscapes, and renowned people. 🌉 Students in Grade 6 completed their in-depth study of bridges in science with an exciting exhibition in the Dining Commons. After learning about various types of bridges from around the world, students selected a famous bridge to research, exploring the bridge design as well as its cultural significance as a landmark. The class also learned how to represent three dimensional objects in orthographic or blueprint style drawings in preparation for drafting a design of their own truss bridge. After their designs were finalized, students built their bridges out of pasta 🍝 and then tested how much mass their bridge could hold before collapsing. 🌑 ☀️ Our Science Department planned an immersive learning experience for our PK-12 students so we could embrace the solar eclipse as a whole School community! In the Upper School, STEAM Program Director Mr. Hardman brought a group of students to Northern New Hampshire to get a better view. All other grades 6-12 students attended a special assembly led by Science Department Chair Ms. Pan and Middle School Dean and Science Teacher Dr. Gallon, where they explained why eclipses happen, why this eclipse is so remarkable, and how to view the eclipse safely 😎 In the Lower School, Kindergarten students explored the creation of shadows, crafting their designs with paper, scissors, and flashlights. Meanwhile, third graders honed their nonfiction reading skills, delving into eclipse literature. A Deeper Dive 🌻 Extended Day Spring Break Camp Many Lower School students spent the first week of March Break on campus at our Spring Break Camp, an extension of our Extended Day program. Each day had a theme with corresponding activities: 🧪 Monday was Science Day where students conducted multiple experiments. 🏀 Tuesday was Sports Day which included games, bingo, and trivia. ☀️ Wednesday was Summer Camp in March which transported us to a day at Brimmer Summer. 🥧 Thursday was Pi Day where we learned about the mathematical constant (and may or may not have had a “pie eating contest”). 🧸 Friday was Animal Day where we made bears out of sand art and played fun animal themed games. The kids had a blast with their friends, ate delicious lunches prepared by our amazing kitchen staff, and enjoyed the beautiful weather. “Spring Break Camp ran from 8 am to 4 pm every day, with some kids coming just for 1-2 days and others the entire week. Students loved that each day was like a longer version of Extended Day with a mix of structured and free play, along with some learning snuck in there.
