Massachusetts artist Abbott Fuller Graves studied in Paris and Munich, where he traveled and worked together with his friend Edmund Tarbell. Tarbell would become a highly influential teacher and one of the principals in creating a style which would become known as The Boston School. In Europe, Graves studied still life painting, eventually in Paris at the Academie Julian. Back in New England, a large part of his work depicted the lush and flower filled gardens around him, as well as scenes including women of leisure enjoying those gardens. He maintained a studio in New York, and also purchased a home in Kennebunkport, Maine. He was a member of numerous art associations, including the Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists of America, National Arts Club, Copley Society, and the Boston Art Club. Graves won numerous awards and prizes in exhibitions, and received four solo shows of his work at Vose Galleries in Boston. It’s hard to believe that in the year and a half of my #founderfriday column, I have yet to celebrate the designer with whom I began my true relationship with fashion — @cynthiarowley. Prior to finding Cynthia’s Chicago store as I began to earn an income in the early 90’s, I was a walking preppie handbook. Through her designs, I found fun and adventure; while I was wearing @gap thanks to an junior ad exec salary, @helmutlang was slowly becoming my spirit animal, and she was the perfect (and affordable!) complement to my uber minimalist nature. It’s no surprise that she kicked off the @cfda new series last week in collab with the #nationalartsclub as, much like art, fashion for her is “fantasy, vision and dreams.” But it’s her business longevity and risk taking that is most admirable. She never took outside capital when she launched 36 years ago so she would not be at the mercy of others — or have her dreams dashed. Brava. I cannot wait to publish my fashion essay collection in which there is, of course, a chapter dedicated to CR. note: #cynthiarowley x tide bikini circa 2002 still in existence in my house.

The Vision & Art Project @visionandartproject celebrates its 10th anniversary with an exhibition What was Once Familiar at the National Art Club, on view until April 26th, 2024. This exhibition showcases the work by Lennart Anderson, Serge Hollerbach, Robert Birmelin, Thomas Sgouros, Robert Andrew Parker, Dohlov Ipcar, and Hedda Sterne – the artists who experienced vision loss but continued to create captivating art. A Glass Songbird, 14x21 is heading to the @nationalartsclub for the annual exhibiting artist member show this May. If you follow me, you’ve probably seen that I’m having a solo show at the club in Oct. So, one way to handle having a solo show is to say NO to everything that comes along and focus only on that goal. For me, I don’t really want to drop out for a year, as in “whatever happened to what’s her name? “and then no one would come to the show anyway because I’d be forgotten , so here’s how I manage to still send some work to my galleries, honor some really nice invitations, etc. First I pull out from my many unfinished paintings, demos, etc , pieces that are good enough to finish but not right for my show. Or, I take work back from galleries to switch around for another venue, sometimes tweaking them if I think they need it! Funny how some paintings can be with a gallery for a good while, and sell right away when moved to somewhere else. It is great to see interesting art by Kozo at a legendary place at National Arts Club. His exhibition goes until April 26th, 2024. He is a talented artist in canvas and sculpture. The painting is his " Looking Through the Looking Glass." This is mixed media on paper with tattoos and hand painted figurines. The sculpture is "His Flights of Legends," a marble sculpture with a hand painted figurine. I enjoyed the Terre Di Borgano Chianti from Toscana, Central Italy, Italy. It is made of mostly Sangiovese grapes. This is the most commonly consumed wine Italy and the most commonly consumed Italian wine in the world. This smooth Chianti has good tannins and acidity with lots of flavors. There are aromas or flavors of cherry, strawberry, red plum, vanilla, and black pepper spices. It was good to be back at the National Arts Gallery in Gramercy Park. In Bloom( Cherry Blossoms), XL was one of the fascinating artworks by Kozo presented by DTR Galleries in their grand gallery for a reception on April 12th, 2024. The exhibition goes until April 26th, 2024. This work is lithograph, acrylic, and tattoo ink on paper. DTR Modern Galleries has 4 brick & mortar locations in Boston, NYC, Washingtn, DC, & Palm Beach. It was fairly crowded with a diversity of attendees. We enjoyed fine white, red, and sparkling wines and beers. Kozo was fascinated with art early on in his childhood in Israel. He started at the age of 17 when he picked up a tattoo needle. Kozo is considered a pioneer of colored micro-realistic tattoos. He has inked on Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Ruby Rose, and Demi Lovato. Kozo is a self-taught artist. He turned his bedroom into a creative space with different styles and techniques. Kozo translates his tattoo designs to traditional mediums like canvas paintings and sculpture in his private studio in Brooklyn.
