Befores then Afters: A building like this one opened in 1890 as a home for young Boston Brahmin bachelors has seen many chapters play out within its four walls. This new chapter entailed a design brief to provide a calm bedroom which also maximized the West facing light & reused furniture & objects that followed the owner from 3 previous apartments abroad. For a bit of additional sunshine we painted the walls & ceiling in #farrowandball Pointing, dead flat finish … a warm white which doesn’t turn grey in the shade. To reinforce this with just the right amount of sheen - the doors, trim & fireplace mantel are painted F&B Farrow’s Cream in modern eggshell. (And for the fun of it - the inside of the ample closet is painted F&B Babouche.) The color scheme complimented the gorgeous pair of vintage Italian drapes from a former NYC library & a #veedonfleece bespoke carpet which once resided in a London dining room. Side note: The antique artist model of winged Victory of Samothrace & the antique Italian garden table were accustomed to being stand alone beauties - but, there wasn’t an alternative space to accommodate the 4’ wingspan. This President’s Weekend it is fitting that we recall that President Washington, compromised by a life long dependence on odious slavery, in the closing years of his life conducted an extensive correspondence with a leading abolitionist, and directed that upon his death his slaves be freed. The President thereby set an example that would eventually prove fodder leading to the Civil War and to our ever improving, in fits and turns, more equatable society. Eugenia Ayer Merrill Seamans strongly supported erecting in 1983 this memorial to the enslaved residents of George and Martha Washington’s place Mount Vernon. Although I have just read that a previous memorial for the same purpose was placed in 1929 was neglected, I seem to recall it when I visited Mount Vernon in the 1950’s. Eugenia, my sister in law’s aunt and neighbor’s daughter in law, with whom I discussed Mount Vernon in detail, served from 1986 to 1990 as the thirteenth Regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association which oversees Mount Vernon. Julia Brambilla, who owned this tapestry, and I discussed my first school boy 1964 visit to the Near East, including my crossing the Mandelbaum Gate from The Hashemite Kingdom into Israel, and the persistent ebb and flow of unhappy history in that region, here, in part, artistically expressed in a tapestry by Francois Tons, 1576-1633, Giving the Keys of Jerusalem to Titus, 39 to 81 AD. Julia and her family donated the tapestry to Harvard. I am quite sure it once hung in her place Caprarola, the former Farnese villa north of Rome, and or then, in what became my, much later, parent’s house Rock Maple in Hamilton. Most importantly, sadly Titus like narratives come and go. Must we repeat them in lieu of genuinely seeking accommodation, inclusion and Peace. I learned much from Julia. Happy Kwanzaa. Our own very modest Kwanzaa homage is to celebrate artistic heritage, namely the long history of beautifully decorated, beaded staffs/maze, this one a Southern Nguni Club, possibly Zulu, South Africa. I wanted one ever since I first saw the film Zulu. In the background there is a Dogon statue, arms raised to the heavens in celebration. There is much to celebrate.
