The date was May 17, 2012 (thanks Gmail search function!). The sky was raining buckets and then...no wait, who am I kidding, it was probably sunny and 78 degrees - I lived in Southern California at the time, so there is no such thing as bad weather! Moving on...I had just recently moved in with my boyfriend (now husband!) and I was adjusting to the cohabitation lifestyle. My boyfriend's underwear collection was better than mine. While we both wore the typical college guy underwear - a mixture of Hanes and Fruit of the Loom boxers and boxer briefs - my boyfriend also had some really nice pairs. He had a bunch of Calvin Kleins and a nice blue pair of Papi trunks (I remember them so clearly). I had no such higher-end pairs in my collection. He had been telling me to buy Calvin Kleins for a while, but I never took the plunge. Well, we were getting ready to go to Europe in four weeks and I needed new clothes. I was shopping online and afterward, I felt the urge to also buy new underwear for Europe. So I did. I purchased my first pair of Calvin Kleins. They were Calvin Klein's body modal boxer briefs, in mink (gray). It was my first "luxury" pair of underwear. I remember when I first put them on, I was like damn, I look good. My boyfriend also very much approved. Why is this my best purchase ever? Because it kicked off the next 10 years of curating my underwear collection and realizing that guys can buy nice underwear, that is very comfortable, and express themselves through patterns and styles. It really was the beginning of MensUnderwearGuide.com so to speak. And I still have plenty of Calvin Klein modals in my collection because they are so comfortable and so good-looking. @gq released their 18 Best Men’s Underwear Brands list on October 11, 2021, and of course, I wanted to read it right away. It always fascinates me to read what others have to say about men’s underwear. GQ’s list had some good moments. Yet, I didn’t find GQ’s list useful for guys wanting to expand their underwear collection or find their next comfortable pair of underwear. As an alternative and more useful companion to GQ, I want to present my list of 18 men’s underwear brands you need to check out (link in bio!!). Note that I didn’t say the 18 *best* men’s underwear brands. There are so many excellent and innovative companies today that it is unfair to say these brands are the best for all guys or the best in the world. Instead, consider it a starting guide to start Finding Your Ideal Pair of Underwear. My list of 18 brands has a good assortment of different brands catering to different styles, features, and price points. And most of the brands offer some underwear that is below $30/pair, which means it is reasonable for many guys to purchase. Many brands offer even cheaper styles in the $10-$15 per pair range. And unlike GQ's list, I include several options with innovative pouch designs, which is one of the biggest trends in 2021 for men's underwear. Ultimately, my goal in creating my blog is to help guys find underwear that works for them. Everyone has different tastes and needs, and there is no one right brand or pair that works best for everyone. I get a wee bit excited whenever men’s underwear makes the news. And I get really excited whenever there is drama (as long as that drama does not include me). The Internet’s fury over Balenciaga’s $1,190 sweatpants with a waistband that makes it look like you are wearing boxer shorts is the perfect storm - high drama involving men’s underwear. Most of the Internet’s fury involves one of the most boring parts of pants (trousers for my British readers): the waistband design. Balenciaga’s sweatpants feature a fake red plaid waistband above the actual waistband of the sweatpants. The plaid waistband’s design simulates wearing boxer shorts and having your pants sag a bit. While this may seem innocent at first, there is much history to sagging pants in the U.S., and not all of it is innocent at all. Marquita Gammage, a professor at Cal State Northridge, notes that the concept of pants sagging has “been used to criminalize Blacks, especially Black males, as thugs and a threat to American society” (CNN, 2021). Gamage’s quote is not a theoretical opinion. Shreveport, Louisiana passed a law in 2007 that criminalized pants sagging. From 2007-2019, 726 people were arrested or cited for violating the law; 712 of those people were black (Shreveport Times, 2019). That means 98% of the people that Shreveport police arrested or cited were black, even though blacks only make up around 57% of the population (ACS, 2019). Thus, the Internet has called out Balenciaga on these sweatpants due to the history of sagging, sagging's cultural significance, and the apparent excessive profit Balenciaga makes on each pair of sweatpants. Regardless of your thoughts regarding the racial aspect of these sweatpants, I say there many reasons to avoid spending $1190 on them. From a financial point of view, I have no clue who pays $1190 for gray sweatpants. From an underwear point of view, I can’t believe that it doesn’t even come with real boxer shorts! From a style point of view, the baggy sweatpants are neither stylish nor trendy. And from a historical and societal point of view, Balenciaga comes off as tone-deaf, especially after the past 18 months. Balenciaga's sweatpants make no sense.

I hated English class in school. I found the books so boring and I was never great at interpreting them. I'd rather just have someone tell me what it means. The one exception was Dante's Inferno. I LOVED that poem. Analyzing the punishment in each circle of hell and its irony in relation to the sins of the sufferer captivated me. Of course, having been written in the 15th century, some of the punishments are incredibly outdated (gays being in the 7th circle, for example). Nonetheless, I found it quite interesting and even today, my husband and I are huge fans of Lucifer. I mention this as Dante's Inferno is not a book; it is an incomprehensibly-long poem. While I won't compare myself to Dante Alighieri, I found myself wanting to write a poem about the transition from boxer briefs to briefs. I am starting to get on the briefs bandwagon (I blogged about my first pair of briefs last year) and I am fully confident that the men's underwear market is shifting from boxer briefs to shorter styles like trunks and briefs. @saxxunderwear Instagram feed is a great example of mainstream acceptance of briefs. I do not wear briefs. I had been boxer briefs-only for at least a decade now (I’m a millennial for reference!). Yet not only did I end up recently ordering a pair of Mack Weldon AIRKNITx briefs – my first briefs in decades – I love them! Thus, this brings up an interesting question: are briefs superior to boxer briefs? As a millennial, I grew up in high school and college wearing boxer shorts, primarily to be “cool,” of course. Since college, though, I have been 100% boxer briefs. And why not? They are comfortable, look amazing, and with an explosion in options, everyone can find something that suits them. However, as men’s clothing trends have grown to tighter and tighter clothing, I started experimenting with trunks. For those not in the know, trunks are simply boxer briefs with shorter legs (usually 2-3 inches instead of 5-6 inches). My first pair of trunks was an old pair of Calvin Klein Steel Trunks from my partner. It seemed so short at first, however slowly – over months – I got used to them. And why did I keep wearing them? Because they are even more comfortable than boxer briefs! I added a couple more pairs of trunks to my collection during the past year from Intimissimi, and I have been on the lookout for more. At the same time, I have wanted to try Mack Weldon since they have been getting such positive reviews. So during the holidays of 2020, I treated myself to a collection of trunks from Mack Weldon. And yet, while browsing their pages, something about their briefs made me want to get a pair to try. So I did, and it was an excellent decision. What I found by wearing briefs is if you have been wearing boxer briefs and are either 1) wanting something a bit cooler temperature-wise, 2) tired of underwear bunching up on your legs, or 3) intrigued about experimenting with shorter underwear styles, I strongly encourage you to try briefs. I love Puma shoes. Specifically their suede shoes. Blue suede, red suede, green suede, tan suede. I have worn most of Puma’s suede colors since high school. Even today, when Puma has sales throughout the year, I always check pricing on their suede lineup to stock up. So yes, I have Puma shoes in my closet - box unopened - ready to be worn when my current Pumas fall apart. Yet, I never gave a thought to buying Puma men’s underwear. That is until I saw these red Puma Performance Boxer Briefs one day at Ross. At the time, my underwear drawer was relatively plain and monochromatic. I’m sure many of you can relate, wearing black, gray, and blue boxer briefs every day. These red Pumas caught my attention: they were bold, even a bit spicy. The price was right, and the fabric composition sold me: 85% polyester with 15% Spandex (elastane). Not only would this Puma underwear be great for working out, it very well could be excellent for wearing anytime. I added it to my cart, and I am glad I did! During the past couple of years, I have loved wearing these Puma boxer briefs. The material feels just as I predicted (which is why it is so important to know your underwear materials!). They are super comfortable, both at the gym and during daily wear, as they are quick-drying when sweating. Today’s #tbt features a tv appearance I did on a local news broadcast a couple months ago. Topic? Boxers vs briefs :). The study I was discussing demonstrated that those who wear briefs tend to have lower total sperm count, likely from increased scrotal temperature.
