MUSEUMS AND DISPLAYS . Statue to Steve Ovett, Brighton. The city of Brighton celebrated its illustrious citizen, the middle distance runner Steve Ovett who was, like our kids, educated at Varndean, up the road. Steve Ovett’s achievements as an athlete were commemorated by his home town with a full running figure. He subsequently was cut off at the ankle of the single grounded foot by scrap dealers. However not to be thwarted in memorialising him, a replica was made in 2012 and erected in Madeira Drive. Personally I prefer the foot with its strong overtones of Magritte. I am perfectly capable of mentally filling in the rest, but would now resent anything more permanent . Delivery of @brightonjetty.sculptures outdoor works today. This one is based on a floating seagrass called Sargassum Floating rafts of Sargassum can stretch for miles across the ocean. This floating habitat provides food, refuge, and breeding grounds for an array of animals such as fishes, sea turtles, marine birds, crabs, shrimp, and more. Some animals, like the sargassum fish (in the frogfish family), live their whole lives only in this habitat. Sargassum serves as a primary nursery area for a variety of fishes.
