New material, off cuts that are used for the popular Friday night tea. I'm from Yorkshire, I can say tea. Fish and chips, plus scraps, please. Lashings of salt and vinegar. No food products have touched the material I'm currently using. It really takes me back and seeing the person wrap the meal in a choreographed way. A well rehearsed movement. Taking the flat sheet and transforming it to a small portable hot package to transport food. Yinka Shonibare CBE RA, London, United Kingdom has so many interesting pieces and is a prolific artist. It was hard to choose. This "Hybrid Mask" (Dogon, 2022) is acrylic paint on lime wood. Yinka is in a wheelchair and has assistance now with his art, but his disability hasn't stopped him. While British by birth, his art is a quest for uncovering his roots and challenges people to go beyond politics and colonial structures to the heart, the truth in his art. The Dogon people are known for their masks and religious traditions, their mask dances, wooden sculptures and architecture. Dogon are native to Mali in West Africa and are a unique tribe unto themselves. The Dogon have their own system of astronomy and calendrical measurements, methods of calculation and extensive anatomical and physiological knowledge as well as systematic pharmacopoeia. The key spiritual figure in their religion - the Nummo twins - also referred to as water - had green skin covered in green hair and were formed like humans from the lower waist up, but serpent-like below. Their eyes were red, their tongues forked and their arms flexible and unjointed. Symbolized by the sun, the word for sun is also synonymous with "mother" or "female" in Dogon religion and language. Red is also considered an important female symbol. This appears to be a nummo female mask or hermaphrodite as they were regarded with painted suns, serpentine red and green. Twinning was an important religious symbol, the marriage of human and the divine. This piece as well as other important pieces are on display at the Serpentine Gallery in South Kensington, UK until September 1, 2024, under the exhibition "Suspended States" which addresses the suspension of boundaries, whether psychological, physical, or geographical - all boundaries of nationhood are in a state of suspense. He is challenging our notions of statehood and that boundaries of separation between us or western culture and others should be reimagined. Loved today. I met so many wonderful people. They were all ace. There is an obvious demand for workshops from talking with people. And they would like me to show how I work. Future ideas I'm planning for. Inspired a few people, too. I brought in some of my sketchbooks to be told, 'Now that's a proper sketchbook'. I've always kept them they're just easy to record quick thoughts. Someone made a brilliant comment that my small pieces would look great in an alternative 'doll house'. Like that idea. Had a restful lunch in the sun on a bench. Was blissfull, watching and listening to the world go by. Spotted some non sculpture sculptures. It's just amazing at the gallery. Working with stuff can be unpredictable, frustrating, and enlightening. I was playing with surface colours today for the new work I'm making for my residency @ferensartgallery I had an image and have made many tests only to decide. No, it's not working for the objects I'm intending to use. The colours above are shouting at me they involve many things that I'm not revealing just yet. Hopefully, all will be good as it starts to come together. As is much of my making, it evolves as I start working. The work so far depicts sculptural elements of shape and form. I have both of these and have created 5 forms. 3 made with the help of my invisible technician 😊 he knows who he is. These beautiful sculptures, carved from Portland Stone emit a sense of serenity, togetherness, calmness and partnership. We are delighted to have Jan Bruce’s work in Bluestone Gallery, @janbrucesculpture .They range from 8” high to 18” high. All can be seen on our website, and of course as always, if you can, pop in and see them for yourself. Jan started stone carving aged 14. He went on to study sculpture at degree level and after several productive years as a young sculptor he diverted onto a different course. Now back where he feels he belongs Jan is developing a distinctive sculptural language, allowing him to express the emotions that drive him. The themes are figurative with varying degrees of semi-abstraction and flowing geometric form. Sean Henry’s ‘Rowers’ sculpture depicts the great Olympic duo, Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent. This sculpture, one of an edition of five, is a smaller version of the original larger than life size sculpture outside the River & Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames. @jillberelowitz returns to the gallery this year with a collection of new pieces. My favourite is her 'Pomegranate Tree' 🌳 cast in bronze from the moulds taken from actual branches and fruit and then assembled by Jill. It is a remarkable piece, so delicate, the burnished pomegranates reflecting the sunshine. The pomegranate is a hugely potent symbol in art and literature, first immortalised by Persephone. Lured into eating six pomegranate seeds by Hades, she was violated and condemned forever to living for six months a year in the underworld. A potent symbol of fertility, it is powerful in its duality: it embodies the light and the dark, death and blood and destruction, but also germination, the miracle of life, the tenderness of love, and the magical possibility of renewal. Trees crop up regularly in Jill's work, including a piece commissioned for Shakespeare's New Place called 'His Mind's Eye'. Another work 'Tree of Life' was displayed in the gallery last year. Trees indicate themes of life and nature's ability to persevere and renew. The pomegranate demonstrates Jill's reflections on the cyclicality of life and the miraculous healing power of nature. This sculpture was perfectly placed @2021visualarts attracting visitors to look closely. Or as one small person did, and crept past 'Sturdy' very slowly when passing it. Looking unsure. And doing the same when leaving. And another very wee person today asking if they could touch 'Broken Lines' and then 'Sturdy'. I love the curiosity and the need to know what it feels like. In a way, I think the work I produce is a kind of interpretation of traditional art practices. Or is it a mimicking of materials and the use of them? The viewer would question what it is made from. Usually followed by surprise. And sometimes I sense a little disappointment from the viewer, 'it would look great in bronze'. Mostly, what I use comes down to cost, as well as a sustainable attitude towards managing the use of materials available along with a sustainable 'practice'. I will always have something to work with. In the past, I've tried to emulate printing by not actually printing. Yeah, it sounds weird. Visually, the work emulated the process and marks of printing. It was a reference, I suppose. But it was made using a combination of plaster and ink on paper. Reminding me of Hepworths drawings on paper where she would wash over plaster so it felt like carving when drawing. Feeling the pencil carve into the 2D surface. I love exploring, experimenting, and seeing what happens. I study the workings of artists from many aspects of art history and contemporary art. Recently, my attention was pointed in this direction, amongst others. Work by Frank Auerbach, 'Building site, Victoria Street, London'. The first thing that grabbed me was the texture. The liberal use of paint, smeared, daubed, brushed, pushed, squashed, carved. Then, I noticed the refinements of windows, posts, a road, structures, and a mound. Then the colour. The subject. British Art Fair Gallery Osborne Samuel have a new Lynn Chadwick exhibition now open until 17 May. Lynn Chadwick owes a lot to the Venice Biennale. In 1952, barely five years into his career as a sculptor (he had trained as an architectural draughtsman and was completely self-taught) he was included in a group show of British sculptors at the Biennale. The poet and art critic Herbert Read wrote an essay in the introduction of the catalogue, in which he coined the phrase ‘the geometry of fear’ to describe the Cold War angst inspiring the work of the artists. The term came to define the group, which also included Kenneth Armitage, Reg Butler and Eduardo Paolozzi. In 1956 Chadwick again represented his country in Venice. Everybody thought that Alberto Giacometti was a shoo-in to win the International Prize for Sculpture that year: instead the trophy went to the Englishman, whose international fame was thus assured. That was the year he produced this sketch, a pen and ink drawing which parallels the developing series of Teddy Boys and Two Dancing Figures, without quite matching either. Osborne Samuel have been closely associated with the late artist for over 30 years. This show features a broad range of his work, from his mobiles of 1951 to the spindly-legged, triangular-faced figures that had become his trademark by the late eighties. Chadwick gave up sculpting in 1995, declaring he had ‘nothing more to say’. In the early 1970s, #AnthonyCaro began sculpturally paraphrasing existing paintings by Old Master—like #Duccio, after whom he named the series of artworks currently exhibited at Museum Würth in Künzelsau. But Caro would not simply “copy” these paintings into the three-dimensional space, but rather translated the works into his artistic language. In the case of the “Duccio” variations, he focused on the architecture framing the scene and other details of the “L’Annonciation” (EN: The Announcement) to the Virgin Mary. Another gem from the archive... In 1982 Sheila and Tony set-up Triangle Art Network with philanthropist Robert Loder to connect abstract painters and sculptors across the world. The couple hosted Triangle Workshop in Pine Plains, New York from 1982-1988, and in 1987 took the workshop to Barcelona where Tony made a new body of work, the Barcelona series. Triangle continues to this day, supporting the work of brilliant artists. Colour Eclipse H3110 mm x W1800 British Land Broadgate Tower London Tim Poell of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill asked me to resolve the view from the four busy lift lobbies in Broadgate Tower with a glass sculpture. An unprecedented technical application in #ColourGlass was agreed as the solution. Two discs are bonded to the front and the overlapping third to the back side of the substrate. The chromatic 'eclipse' of two colours creates a third colour. The glass was made here in the studio and poured into heated kilns to create the domed miniscus edged colour discs that lense and distort what is seen through them.
