Barbican Centre, London. I thought i couldn't possibly not post this today as The Barbican Centre reopens today!! The Barbican Centre and Estate is one of my absolute favourite places! It is such a wonderful place to wander round, the housing estate and the superb brutalist architecture, and the Barbican Centre which has 2 Art Galleries, a Concert Hall, Library, Cinema, free concerts in The Foyer, shop, cafes and restaurants and a terrace bar with views out over the water and water fountains...and of course its amazing Conservatory. The Art Gallery is reopening today with pre-booked timed slots, and also the fabulous Conservatory, with the same arrangements. The Library will re-open later this month and The Curve gallery reopening next month. Wishing everyone a wonderful week. Brutalist Architecture. Centrepoint London. 1963-66 Experimenting with different angles of photographing Centrepoint! Centrepoint is a 34 storey building in Central London, and was one of the 1st skyscrapers in London. It is constructed from reinforced concrete, and was once the site of gallows. It has been Grade 11 Listed since 1995 and in 2015 it was converted from office space to luxury residential apartments. The architect was George Marsh and the architectural firm was Richard Seifert & Partners. The 2nd image is a fine liner drawing i did of an iguana! Cotton Gardens Estate comprises 3 towers of 22 storeys and is a very interesting estate to walk around as the view keeps changing and it has lots of interesting angles and vantage points. Brutalist Architecture. A montage of some of this year's photographs of some of Brutalism's Greats. Sadly though 2019 was the year we saw the tragic denial of listed status of the wonderful Wellbeck Street Car Park (pictured) and it's sad demolition. Also the beginning of the demolition of Robin Hood Gardens, The Thamesmead Estate (pictured) and the demolition of Sampson House. I read in an old Architectural Digest - "For decades Brutalist Architecture was the symbol of the underclass. Soulless, grey, crumbling structures. Today, however, brutalism is back in style. In an age where gentrification is a dirty word, these hulking masses represent an extraordinary optimism and determination to use architecture to transform society. London treats its brutalist buildings with care and respect, with many now granted heritage listed status'. This article was written just before the approval of the boutique hotel and demolition of Wellbeck Street Car Park, and sadly other great brutalist buildings have been lost but there is certainly a new revival and wave of appreciation of Brutalism, so let's hope that they continue to be proud structures in our city and around the world and that they are maintained in their intended use and we do not see too much of the social cleansing that happened at Balfron Tower in Poplar. I thought on Monday about doing a small project/challenge of seven days, seven brutalist buildings, absolutely no reposts, but didn't have room to include this then thought should i leave it till after Christmas as there's so much going on in London at Christmas it's a photographer's dream! But now I've posted 3...this is day 4....i think I'll carry on! I was reading about the '60s photographer (Brian) Duffy in this week's 'Amateur Photographer' magazine, who, along with Bailey and Donovan, were the most famous influential photographers of the time and continued to be so. Duffy's son Chris, who is a photographer himself and runs The Duffy Archive, has just published a revised version of the 2011 book 'Duffy'. This made me think about how people get into photography and art. Brutalist Architecture. Blake Tower, Barbican Estate, London. Grade 11 Listed. Chamberlin, Powell and Bon. Blake Tower (formerly The Barbican YMCA) is a 16 storey tower, with 2 storeys below ground. It is the latest building on The Barbican Estate to be converted into 74 luxury flats. Few changes were made to the exterior due to it's Grade 11 Listed status but improvements were made to the buildings acoustics, thermal performance and water efficiency. Brutalist Architecture. Lister House and Treves House, Whitechapel/Bethnal Green, London. Architect Ralph Smorczewski. 1956. The first 5 photographs are Lister House, a high rise block of flats, and the last 4 are Treves House, a low rise block of flats. The residents have fought and won a brave campaign to save their homes from demolition and they will now be refurbished instead. A landmark for council housing in England. Until recently these buildings faced an uncertain future as the council failed to maintain them encouraging decay and neglect and residents and leaseholders including a long term 95 year old resident feared they would be evicted but Tower Hamlets Council have now agreed to refurbish these homes rather than demolish them. The architect Ralph Smorczewski was Jewish and grew up in Poland. Under the Nazis his farmer father applied to have the most number of farm workers to keep as many people alive and feed them. Ralph eventually came to London and graduated from the Architectural Association in 1951. His experiences instilled in him a strong sense of social and human justice. Brutalist Architecture. Camden Town Hall Annexe (1974), now The Standard Hotel, London. (written upsidedown!). I posted a photograph of this lovely brutalist building some time ago when construction work was under way to transform it into a 266 room hotel in the heart of Kings Cross, and hoped they wouldn't alter it too much. It opened as The Standard Hotel #thestandardhotellondon a couple of months ago. They have kept the library which was such a part of this building and incorporated it in the lounge area of the public bar. As i never saw the interior before I'm not sure the extent of the alterations but the public bar and lounge are very cosy and there is also a restaurant and garden. Three new storeys have been added and there is a terrace bar. Brutalist Architecture. Metro Central Heights, formerly Alexander Fleming House, Elephant and Castle, Southwark, London. Architect - Erno Goldfinger. Grade 11 Listed. Formerly a multi-storey office complex, and home to the DHSS, or Ministry of Health as it was then, which is where it is believed it took its name from, Alexander Fleming, who discovered penicillin. It became notorious for 'sick building syndrome' and the DHSS was moved out. It was saved from demolition and converted to residential properties in 1997. At the time of construction it was the tallest residential building in London.The estate comprises buildings with panels of primary colours, with the Great Arthur House tower block being yellow.
