The Tower of London looks like it's on fire. Don't panic! it's just the glow of the warm amber flood lights. However, the Tower has certainly felt the fear of flames on many occasions. Once being the time during the Great Fire of London, when in Sep 1666 just a stone throw away, a fire broke out in a bakery. 80% of the cities original square mile moving west of the bakery was swallowed by the flames. But if the wind was moving east, the flames would have soon reached an indescribable amount of gun power that was being stored in the Tower of London - 💥. The Gun is a Grade II listed public house at 27 Coldharbour, in the isle of Dogs. It takes its name from the cannon which was fired when the West India Docks first opened in 1802. The pub has occupied the plot of 27 Coldharbour since the early 18th century under various trading names. It was first called The King and Queen in 1722 before being renamed to The Rose and Crown in 1725 and later Ramsgate Pink in 1745. It took on its current name, The Gun, in 1771. Lord Horatio Nelson is commonly associated with The Gun having lived locally and where it is said that he visited the docks to inspect the guns. In addition, he would frequent the pub to secretly meet Lady Emma Hamilton in an upstairs room (now called The River Room) for their affair. There is also a long association with smugglers landing contraband on the site and distributing it via a hidden tunnel. To this day there is still a spy-hole in the secret circular staircase to watch out for “The Revenue Men”. Not only are the gardens beautiful, we were lucky enough to have a tour of this remarkable centre by our friend @hancock_alison. Maggie’s is a charity that provides free expert cancer support in 24 centres across the UK. Each centre is uniquely designed by a world leading architect (this one is by Richard Rogers) often incorporating gardens designed by leading landscape designers (in this case Dan Pearson) as part of the charity’s philosophy that great design and architecture can help people feel better. The charity calls it ‘Healing Architecture’ and they are designed to be ‘a home from home …designed to look nothing like a hospital’ I love the fact that every centre has a ‘kitchen table’ gathering place at it’s heart. The Design Museum of London by OMA, Allies and Morrison, and John Pawson (2016; London) OMA reinjected life into the grade II* listed, modernist building while retaining its distinctive copper roof and parabolic form. OMA with Allies and Morrison were the architects responsible for the design of the refurbished structural shell and external envelope of the building. The project required a close working relationship with Design Museum interior architects, John Pawson. I loved the original location on at Shad Thames in the Bauhaus building but this helps fulfil the bigger goals of the Museum and reaches more populations. Pawson is an idol and OMA always intrigue.
