1. ‘Our Lady of Bikini’ (1946) by Colin Middleton: his tortured spiritual reflection on nuclear weapons testing in the Bikini Atoll. In the early days Middleton’s relationship with Waddington was cloudless. The two men had a casual and intimate friendship based on mutual respect. Waddington was so hopeful for this darkly imaginative talent that he agreed to pay Middleton for paintings before he even delivered them. This gave Middleton financial and artistic freedom. It allowed him to move to County Down where his art took on an expansive, philosophical quality. He denied being influenced by Jack Yeats during his transition from Surrealism to Expressionism. In fact, he claimed never to have seen a Yeats painting before the 1950s. I’m personally skeptical on that front (slide 2 is Yeats slide 3 is Middleton). Later on Nevill Johnson and Colin Middleton also claimed to be unaware of each other during the 40s. But we know they actually went on painting holidays together. The anxiety of influence is strong. Whatever you think, Middleton was Waddington’s preferred Belfast boy. He promoted him up and down Ireland, set up exhibitions in London and America for him. Members of the Irish press referred to Middleton as being a more formally competent version of Yeats. It all looked so promising. Except that the initial business arrangement was deeply flawed. Waddington would pay Middleton up front, the paintings would arrive and then they didn’t sell to the public. So Waddington took them into his own private collection in the hopes of selling them later. In the end he accrued such a large stash of Middleton’s paintings that he was able to mount his own retrospective of the artist’s work. Middleton did not take that well. When Waddington moved to London and entered the big time, his Northern Irish protege rather hoped he might rise to the top with him. But Middleton was to be disappointed. It was a very happy interlude and creatively indispensable for Colin Middleton. 1933 - Wilson Memorial Church, Portobello, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK - James S Johnston. Category B listed. Wes Anderson-esque. James Stewart Johnston was born in 1901, and was educated at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh. He started his training in his father’s architecture firm in 1918 but moved two years later for a five-year apprenticeship with Henry & Maclennan, studying at Edinburgh College of Art under John Begg. He returned to his father’s practice in 1926 as an assistant. He made biennial trips abroad which took him to France, Switzerland, Belgium and Holland. He was taken into partnership by his father in 1930 and was admitted as a student member of the Edinburgh Architectural Association in 1932. He continued to practise alone until 1947 when he took his younger brother Frank W Johnston (born 1906) into partnership, the firm name becoming J & F Johnston. They don’t make them like this any more! Last week I was out in the borough of Bromley for a our new guidebook, Modernism Beyond Metro-Land. My last stop was the River Park Gardens estate in Ravensbourne. It was opened in 1961 and designed by the LCC Architects Department. Most of the estate is fairly routine, rows of tile-clad maisonettes with pitched roofs. But between two of the blocks is this wonderful elliptical bridge link and staircase, with its stark concrete and glass. At the bottom of the staircase is some nice abstract tile work, (most of it covered in notices). 1967 - Pathfoot Building, University of Stirling, Scotland, UK - RMJM (architect - John Richards). Category A listed. Part of a stunning modernist campus. The former country estate was developed in the late 1960s by the architects RMJM, with contributions from Reiach and Hall and Morris and Steedman - three of Scotland’s most significant post-war modernist architecture practices. The modernity is contrasted with the surviving 18th century designed landscape, and the Robert Adam designed Airthrey Castle. Alongside the offices and lecture theatres, Pathfoot is also a public art space, displaying the University’s art collection along with temporary exhibitions, in its corridors and 17 courtyards. The ethos from day one was a belief that artworks should be accessible to all, who work, study or visit. There’s a nod to another RMJM’s building, the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh. This was under construction at the same time as the design and construction of Pathfoot. John Richards was the partner in charge of both projects. Both buildings share similarities with a strong horizontal emphasis with linear white roof line above a recessed dark window line. Pre-fabrication was also used on both projects to allow rapid progress on site. The partnership of Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners was founded in 1956 in Edinburgh when Stirrat Andrew William Johnson-Marshall (1912-1981), who was then Chief Architect to the Ministry of Education, joined Robert Hogg Matthew who had been Chief Architect to the London County Council. Robert Matthew was Professor of Architecture at Edinburgh University (1953-1968) at the time the company was founded. It remains one of the largest architecture and design networks in the world. Notable projects include: New Zealand House, London, Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh, United Kingdom and Capital Gate, Abu Dhabi. 1971 - Orchard Brae House, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK - Alan Reiach Eric Hall & Partners - Peter Burnett Caird. Six storey and 25,362 sqft of office space now with gym, cafe, electric bikes, yoga studio, sanctuary garden and parenting room. In 1940 Robert Matthew brought Reiach into the Scottish Office as assistant secretary of the Scottish Housing Advisory Committee at the Department of Health. Reiach was elevated to FRIBA in 1959, his proposers being William Hardie Kininmonth, J Holt and Robert Hogg Matthew. In 1965 Alan Reiach & Partners merged with Eric Hall & Partners to form Alan Reiach, Eric Hall & Partners. Peter Burnett Caird was educated at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh. He studied at the School of Architecture, Edinburgh College of Art from 1945 to 1947. He spent part of the 1947 with Basil Spence while the practice was involved with the ‘Enterprise Scotland’ exhibition. He returned to the College, completed the course and was elected ARIBA in 1951 and ARIAS in 1964. Caird returned to Spence as an assistant in that year and remained there until 1957. Whilst with Spence, he was involved with alterations to the Edinburgh University Staff Club. In 1961 he joined Eric Hall & Partners and stayed with the practice when it was amalgamated in 1965 as Alan Reiach Eric Hall & Partners. Caird was admitted FRIBA on 16 July 1969, his proposers being John Hardie Glover, Alan Reiach and Eric Hall. 1950 - St Kevins RC Church, Bargeddie, Scotland, UK - Gillespie, Kidd & Coia. Gillespie, Kidd & Coia were a Glasgow practice and their focus was a series of striking Roman Catholic Churches, the most famous being St Peter’s Seminary at Cardross, Scotland. During this period there was a huge post-war construction boom. New towns being built to accommodate a move out of slums and to meet the baby boom demand. These housing schemes needed new churches to serve the new communities. Gillespie, Kidd & Coia were one of the few practices involved in the building of these new churches. Coia hired 17-year-old Isi Metzstein as an apprentice, soon followed by Andy MacMillan in 1954, a contemporary of Metzstein. MacMillan joined the firm from the East Kilbride Development Corporation. Despite neither of the young architects being fully qualified, they had creative control by 1956. Began in 2001 and still being developed - Quartermile, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK - Foster + Partners . A bit off piste for me but geographically in my small orbit, as I recover from an op. Anyway, stunning mixed use redevelopment of the former Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh site, in Lauriston, Edinburgh. The redevelopment began in 2001. Many of the original Victorian buildings have been restored and many new ultra model buildings added. You can’t deny the incredible contrast, love it or loathe it. It’s called Quartermile as it’s a quarter mile from Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile and also measures a quarter mile from corner to corner. Simpson Loan in Edinburgh was crowned the most expensive street to live on in Scotland, which is part of / on the edge of the development. It was master-planned by architect Foster + Partners. The scheme comprises a mixture of new build apartments, apartments converted from the existing nineteenth-century hospital buildings, new offices, housing, and retail/leisure. A whopping 1,050 apartments, 370,000 square feet (34,000 m2) of office space, 65,000 square feet (6,000 m2) of retail and leisure space and seven-acres of open landscape. The site had previously been occupied by George Watson’s Hospital (a school, known then as a hospital). The original building, by William Adam, was incorporated into the new David Bryce-designed infirmary buildings. Bryce had commissions for over 230 buildings during his career, predominantly country houses but also banks and Fettes College, Edinburgh. Foster + Partners is a British international architecture firm, founded in 1967 by Sir Norman Foster. This piece was Manufactured by “Extra Fino” which is most likely local tailor company. The gala visor cap is most famously seen being worn by president Higinio Morínigo (my key reference for historical photos on these caps) who was a General de Division in the Paraguayan army. Over the past weekend I visited an antique mall I hadn’t been to for a long time. There’s usually something there but the prices can be a bit negotiable. However one booth had a 520 for 10 dollars which I didn’t want to pass up. Was being sold as not running, but all it needed was a good maintenance. I brought over my other 520 from my mom’s house to run them together. Just needs a pantograph to finish it up. 1974 - Meadowbank House, London Road, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK - H M Office of Works (later Ministry of Works, Department of the Environment and Property Services Agency). Multi-storey former Government office block, concrete, brick and steel construction, cross-shaped. Now known as St Margaret’s it stands on the site of the St Margaret’s Motive Power Depot (railway workshop / depot). In 2008, an Arts charity - Edinburgh Palette‘ negotiated for several floors of the then vacant office building. After & before. The first phase of our project ‘t Seghe Waert in Zoetermeer has been completed. The renovation (including new built rooftop dwellings) of an apartment block in occupied condition. Next phase of the project will be the transformation of an elderly care building into 128 new flats, maisonnettes, new care homes with public facilities. 1970 - The Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre, The University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK - Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners. I’m 54 today 👴🏻🎂🥳 so will post a few I can find that were built in 1970. Category B listed. The University’s largest lecture facility, with 481 seats. In 2018 the University changed the name of the theatre - previously known as George Square Theatre - in memory of Gordon Aikman, a graduate of the University’s Business School who raised £500,000+ for research funding into motor neurone disease. Also used as a theatre and as an Edinburgh Fringe Festival venue. The partnership of Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners was founded in 1956 in Edinburgh when Stirrat Andrew William Johnson-Marshall (1912-1981), who was then Chief Architect to the Ministry of Education, joined Robert Hogg Matthew who had been Chief Architect to the London County Council. Robert Matthew was Professor of Architecture at Edinburgh University (1953-1968) at the time the company was founded. It remains one of the largest architecture and design networks in the world. Taken from a post-war Italian Army original, it features a single front pleat, with side seam pockets and two rear patch pockets with flap and button. The waist band is high as per the custom of the time, closed with two buttons. We made it in two fabrics: a classic light khaki cotton drill and in a cream-colored cotton-linen blend. In the original black and white photos it is possible to see it worn by Italian soldiers during the period 1946-‘47. WW2 era Paraguayan service uniform visor cap for the rank of General de División or equivalent to Major General. This particular cap is initialed to “G A” and most interestingly the cap was manufactured in Argentina by Sastrería Militar and even features the Argentine coat of arms on the front of the sweatband. This cap is only one in a lot of three that I acquired. which even includes the original travel case. Unfortunately the initials “G A” is the only indication of a name that can be found. But the original owner most likely severed in the Chaco War to some capacity given the rank. 1964 - Edinburgh Napier University, Merchiston, Edinburgh, Scotland - Alison Hutchison & Partners. Edinburgh Napier University took its name from 16th-century Scottish mathematician and philosopher John Napier. The Merchiston Campus is home to the Schools of Art & Creative Industries, Computing and Engineering & the Built Environment. It is built around the refurbished shell of Merchiston Castle (pictured), the family home of John Napier. Merchiston Castle is also the ancient seat of Clan Napier and is Category A listed. Robert Forbes Hutchison studied at Edinburgh College of Architecture and Heriot-Watt College. He obtained a position as assistant architect to Fife County Council in July 1930, moving in December 1932 to Dundee City Architect’s Department and at the beginning of 1936 to North Riding County Council. He joined Nottingham Corporation Architect’s Department as senior assistant, leaving after nine years to take up an appointment as Deputy City Architect to the City of Stoke-on-Trent Corporation. In 1948 he returned to Scotland as chief architect to the Regional Hospital Boards of Scotland (except the Western Regional Board), and he commenced independent practice in Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy in 1950 when he acquired the practice of his former employer Walter Alison on the latter’s death. He continued to practise thereafter under the name of Walter Alison & Hutchison, his work principally consisting of school and hospital buildings.
