We were so honored to be a part of @arden_elementary career day along with local police, firefighters, EMS, and other organizations. Close to 100 students from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade stopped by our table to learn the career paths that our Neighborhood Revitalization team members Samuel and Michael have taken and what eventually brought them to #construction and #housing. They were also able to participate in an activity of guessing the length and then learning to measure 2x4 pieces, learn how to use a screw gun, and at the end they signed the boards, just like #volunteers on the builds do. We're thrilled for our affiliate #partner to the north, @habitatcltregion . This week they are the honored host of the 39th annual Jimmy & Rosalyn Carter Work Project where along with #Volunteers across the world, including Trisha Yearwood & Garth Brooks, will be building 27 homes. Jimmy & Rosalyn from 1984-2019, worked alongside more than 104,000 volunteers in 14 countries to build, renovate, and repair 4,390 homes. "The 2023 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project will take place at Habitat Charlotte Region’s large-scale affordable housing neighborhood, The Meadows at Plato Price. Named after the Plato Price School, this historically significant West Charlotte area was once a thriving African-American neighborhood. Plato Price School closed in the 1960s when desegregation took hold, and the land lay vacant until the city of Charlotte donated it to Habitat Charlotte Region in 2019." She has waited patiently since 2019 for the perfect location as she did not want to lose or move away from her support system she relies on. Marlene has lived in Lexington County and Gaston area for the past 17yrs. She loves to help people through picking up and distributing clothes and food, and she assists her minister whenever a call to action is made. Marlene has dealt with health, pet, and landlord issues while in the program, but she never let that deter her from meeting her sweat equity hours and reaching her goals. Marlene has completed over 420 hours of sweat equity, with over 130 of those being on build sites, assisting others as they become #homeowners. When Marlene was asked about how Habitat would #impact her life and what being a #homeowner would mean to her, she stated: “This is nothing short of a miracle. Prayers answered. I appreciate the fact that I am able to be a part of this program. I was a homeowner in 2005, but when the house was destroyed in a lightning strike, I lost everything. I was never able to financially get to that spot again due to my fixed income. Through Habitat, I’ll finally be able to have a place to call home, in a place I feel supported, and at a price that fits my income.” #homematters #community #hardwork #buildimpact #donate #volunteer

Distinctive Surfaces has been donating the kitchen countertops in our homes since 2013. This past fiscal year that in-kind donation was used to complete 5 homes; in total over 50. Mortgage payments reinvest into the organizational expenses so donations can completely support the mission and adjacent initiatives.
